Begin by turning the pallet upside down and knocking the chocks (wooden supporting blocks) out. The technique here is to distribute your blows with the lump mallet between the three blocks and gradually knock the section apart. Once you have done this to all three supporting sections place these pieces underneath the main body of the pallet. Using the claw hammer knock the revealed nails through their holes. Try to get all nails out of the wood otherwise you risk damaging your tools when using the pieces for your next project. Knocking nails out of wood is a skill. A skill albeit that you most likely will never write on your CV but one that nonetheless require you to be patient and accurate. Use the lump mallet to rock the nails into shape if they bend. If a nail becomes to malleable cut it in half using pliers or a hacksaw and try knocking it out again. Once those nails are out use the prybar to take strips of wood. In this case as there are seven strips all the odd number strips are released using the even number strips to pivot the prybar. Turn the remaining section over and again on the blocks knock the last strips of wood out.
Be careful when knocking the chokes of their strips to avoid squashing your fingers. Also take care to avoid kneeling or standing on the nails. The nails are ribbed and not for your pleasure. They also have shards of metal attached to them from however they were arranged in a nail gun. Try not to run your fingers along them otherwise you will receive metal splinters along with wooden ones if you decide not to wear work gloves.

I watched the video until 02:30 and I thought it's a great idea. I just got out of the house and took one of the thirty pallets I have for dismantling/cutting. Perfect. This is so far the easiest way to clean dismantling a pallet I have learned about. You don't need special tools for this. Thank you.

This is the absolute best way to take apart a pallet. No special tools like a sawzall, chisels, etc. No fiddling with scraps of wood between each slate. Imagine though if you had the Airlocker Nail Remover!

Thanks for this vid. I've done it with this method once a very long time ago. Then I got myself a reciprocating saw, which I found easier to take the pallets apart with. Just a couple of months ago though, my reciprocating saw died, crank shaft must be munted. So, I'm back to doing it the good old fashioned manual labor way!

Great...When he knocks the square blocks out at the start is he using a piece of metal as the cushion or is it wood?? This has been really helpful, I've been taking hours over these small type pallets and ending up with just a couple of pieces intact.

A nail bar is a very handy tool for this kind of task...instead of pecking those nails through. And you can pry the boards apart with it as well. If you're worried about marking the boards, use a small board under the nail bar. There are any number of good ways of doing this task, but working on a table or something else that's stable and not on the ground can sure make it easier on your back.

Very good, I like your method for straightening the nails with the lump hammer. One other tool will make the job a bit easier and I learned this from a good carpenter when I was working with him. I used to pull out the nails with a claw hammer just like you but he told me to use a medium size crow bar that has the curved head with the nail pulling V in it. I bought a couple of Gorilla bars that have this nail pulling head (after the curve). The crow bar is much easier to pull out the nails with (due to its sweeping curve and leverage) and its easier on your wrist and you don't have to bend over as much or kneel down when removing the nails.

Nice, but I have seen a video did it with jig saw for metal. The idea is to go right away for any gap between the two wood and cut the nail, so the wood will come out easily. It will take less time to do so and it will not hurt the wood.

That's a nice idea. Good luck with the project. Just a word of advice, always wear a dust mask when cutting pallet wood as some are treated with harmful preservative chemicals, and any furniture made should be sealed with a good quality varnish.

I've been dismantling pallets intensely the last few days, and I tried exactly the same way as you are doing here, but it just doesn't work with EUR pallets. The pallet you were dismantling looked brand new, and quite thin/flimsy. I wish our pallets were like that :) Add to the difficulty, when the pallets are wet, have been lying in the snow or water, expanding and grab on to the nails harder, and are heavy as fook :) Good job there, miscpro, the result you produced was phenomenal! :)

Thanks!! 2 ideas: 1 of yours - using a thin piece of wood to place alongside the pallet so as not to damage the pallet wood. Awesome! I will use this technique now! 1 of mine - from watching this I thought as to how you could speed up the process by not mis-hitting the nails. Use a tool/device/some scrap wood for instance that can SURROUND the nail you're about to hit. Imagine, say, a musical tuning fork, but thicker and reaching close to the height of the nail. Support the nail with this

You may want to invest in an air hammer, the kind that fits in the palm of your hand. It will drive the nails back in seconds and do a better job than anyone can with a hammer. Trust me on this one, I spent ten years teaching construction methods at a community college and prefer to swing a hammer to using an air nailer, but the palm air hammer is a tool I like.

This was very cool, I love how you showed how to dismantle every piece, and I learned a lot of great little tricks! I tried dismantling a pallet and broke all the wood pieces but one and smashed my hands beside. Since you asked for feedback - this video could have had the same amount of information and been much shorter with some editing. Loved the tips (like straightening a nail) but a lot of it was redundant and the closeups of hammering made my eyes twitchy. Next pallet however I will try your techniques!
