I did the one with the black paint and it turned out so awesome I also used gray latex paint on a rubber roller and went across it hear and there also on some of the other boards I went across the whole board and it just colored the tips of the grains and the distress lines it came out so amazing. I thought of another tool to distress the wood. just a regular brick with very rough lines like some houses have by running it across the wood it worked perfectly. On some of the boards I dipped the brick in some of the gray paint that I poured on a paper plate (small amount) like if I where going to use to stamp it but instead of stamping it on the board i ran it down the board either pushing it down hard and light alternating. Very unique look but on all the boards I still used the black paint technique. Thank you so much for making this viedo. keep up the beautiful work.

I like the look on the last board

Made my wife a picture frame using this paint technique and it looks amazing. I spent about $2 on the pine since there is a lumber yard on my street and $1 on glass from a cheap from at the dollar store. Thanks for the video!

This is an outstanding DIY tutorial. My wife pulled the "while we're here..." move when shopping this weekend. Walked into a joint that had all sorts of furniture with this same application, $300 later we now have a table that I could have easily distressed myself with your method.

one way I learned from an old school finisher, if you don't want such a dramatic change but still want the distressing to show, stain the piece, let it dry, then spray on sanding sealer. let that dry, sand lightly and then stain with ebony stain or something very very dark. when you wipe off the stain, it will stay in the holes and crevices you have created, accenting these while leaving the rest of the area with the regular stain. let dry and then top coat. I have used this many times to great effect, including on a huge mirror frame that was 10" wide. I beat on that thing for a week until I was satisfied it was distressed enough.

I bought a pinch roller for applying laminate to a substrate off Craigslist for $40 , it's 50" wide and had no motor, the rollers were beat to hell but I had a purpose in mind. I drove horseshoe nails, finish nails, screws and wire coils into the rubber on the rollers and attached a crank to the drive spindle. The lower roller is adjustable for thickness so I can run anything from half to four and a half inches through it and it only repeats the pattern every 22", almost undetectable. By varying the pinch pressure I'm able to go from a mild distress to heavy distress at the turn of a spring loaded knob. This cobbled together piece of crap has saved me hundreds of hours of labor making my line of rustic old west furniture. Along with the good ol' vinegar and steel wool trick I can use lumber fresh off the greenchain and make it appear 100 years old in less than a week.

Nice tips although to be honest I don’t fancy the angle grinder trick. What I have done previously is run a chisel down the sides and vary the pitch to create some uneven scallops. It creates an effect that looks almost like it’s been hand hewn with an axe. It is a bit strange I think that we all love wood that looks like it’s been beaten up after spending thousands of years (and dollars!!) developing and buying tools and machines that create perfect surfaces. Humans are funny creatures for sure!! That said, the piece turned out lovely so thanks for sharing 👍🏻🍻

That watered down brush, you can stand back and give it a quick shake towards the board. That will give the effect of worm holes in the wood. I had a grand father clock that had that look.

Nice technique. My grandfather use to keep a five gallon bucket with water in it that he put scrap iron in. He would wipe his oak projects down with the water. The Iron in the water reacted with the tannin in the oak that gave it a really nice aged look. Not sure how this would work on woods like pine that has very little tannin.

A meat tenderizer hammer works well too. Leaves interesting textures and patterns.

What did you use on the cabinet doors? I'm trying to get a more cool brown tone like that using pine trim. but every thing brings a golden warm tone out in the pine. Thank !

You can save a step by going to your local lumber yard and getting a clear stain tint base and having it tinted to any color you want.

Shit hot. I'm a blaster by trade so this wud take me 20 seconds blasting it. Your way still does a good finish.

Great video ... my 15-year-old son and I banged out a 6-foot plank in 30 minutes. I am going to resurface some beams in my living room with this technique. I need to lighten it up and will tweak the colors a bit. Quick question ... is the Minwax water-based or oil-based. I used a water-based alternative brand stain on the board that I used. Any thoughts?

An umber colored paint would work well, a little less 'black' than black but giving a dark aged effect.

Chuck Norris only needs to stare to make the wood distressed.

The finished result is nice and the video is good for getting results , but I would encourage everyone to not hold the board while angle grinding it like he did. Even if you've done this hundreds of times it only takes one time to go wrong and for you to lose a thumb or seriously injure yourself. Please encourage everyone to properly secure the board with clamps or a vice before going at it with an angle grinder. The few extra minutes is worth preventing an injury.

Just found this video and I like your method to distress wood. Question: do you distress each piece of a project individually and then assemble afterwards? Or, do you assemble and then distress afterwards? I can see pros and cons for each. Thanks again.
