Welcome to Adam’s Garden Guides, and I'd be delighted if you could subscribe to my channel if you enjoy this video and would like more.
One of my favourite hardy perennial plants to grow in patio pots are Hostas, valued mainly for their bold, colourful foliage but also for their summer flowers that attract bees and beneficial insects, like hoverflies.
After three or four years growing in a pot the plants have spread to fill all available space and become pot bound, so it’s time to divide and rejuvenate!
In this step-by-step video I show you some of my favourite hostas and how to divide them in spring.
Thanks for watching, and if you enjoy this video please press the ‘thumbs up’ icon and subscribe to my channel at Adam’s Gardening Guides. Happy Gardening!

You can do it! A congested plant has lots of new growth points so just divide up into several smaller pieces like I did and replant. Good luck!

Very helpful video thank you. Where you have pots that have a narrower neck than body, how do you remove the plant without needing to break the pot? Also, what is your secret to keeping slugs away from all your Hosta pots which I assume live on the ground? Thanks 😊

That's a hard one! In teh past I've had to cut up the plant and its rootball in the pot in order to remove it. One gardening expert I once spoke to said teh only way to get out the plant was to break the pot! Extreme and costly, but sometimes there's no alternative. To keep slugs and snails away I usualy stand my pots in saucers of water .... this keeps pots watered and the moat of water does deter them. You could also stick a complete ring of copper tape around the side or rim of the pot. This can help as teh snails often won't travel across the copper tape. I also inspect plants regularly, and if I notice any leaf damage I go out at night with a torch and search among the leaves until I find the culprit!

can you divide now? i.e. leaves have grown but no flowers yet?

@@martinj40m A good question. I prefer dividing congested plants before they develop leaves as it is far easier, and avoids damaging them in the process. However, I recently repotted a large one and took off a couple of side pieces with roots and leaves, and they are growing away fine in new small pots. So, if you think you can handle the plant without damaging leaves then dividing it in May would probably be fine. There is still plenty of time in this growing season for now roots to develop and establish in a new home.

Why don't you seal your pots on the inside then you won't need plastic. They make sealer in spray cans. Your garden is beautiful.

Interesting suggestion. For me, by recycling my old compost bags I can save money buying a chemical spray sealant. And in future I might want to plant something different in this pot that prefers better drainage too.
