How to DIY Insulated Conservatory Roof less than £320 - Single handed 30 something women!

How I single handed insulated our conservatory roof to improve the insulation. I am a 30 something lady who has a love or creating and doing DIY. I am no expert, everything is self taught via KZfaq! So I like to make my own videos to help other people too. This is just what I did, I am not an expert and this is not offering advice on how to do it.
Feel free to ask questions, I try to answer all comments
List of materials:
Wood batons from my local timber merchant £70 approx
Space Quilt from insulation hub.co.uk £95.95
Aluminium Jointing Tape £15
Plasterboard Screws £8
Self Taping Screws £8
Extra insulation from Amazon £13
Plasterboard x 9 boards from B&Q £53.82
Jointing Compound from B&Q 15kg £25.00
Jointing tape from B&Q £5.61
Paint form B&Q £25
Tool that I bought were from B&Q but some I already owned and will use again so have't included them in the cost.
Total cost £319.38

This is great. You have inspired me to do mine. I have the same roof but my conservatory is really old and ugly. But I’ve spent a small fortune on the house, as much as I’d like to rip it down and start again, i just can’t. I hadn’t thought of using plasterboard, i thought it would be too heavy. Bravo 🙌🏻

Firstly great job 👍 I know that this was done years ago... But I'd add, thermal acrylic paint to the wall & if you like, why not the ceiling as well. Then add a far infrared heater bar, to heat it in the winter, this will cost a lot less to run than the oil filled radiator 👍👍

This video inspired me to have a crack at this myself. I’m following the same idea with same materials. I’m just doing a lean-to so it’s a bit easier. I got the insulation up 95% yesterday. Despite it being a cold night, down to 1 degree, it definitely made a difference. I have a Dyson fan that logs temps so I can compare quite clearly before and after. Between 6-9pm it was 2 degree’s warmer with the insulation. It also warmed up quicker in the morning. It’s a sunny January day, 2 degree’s outside but the conservatory is 22 degree’s and warming the house up! That’s definitely better than before.

I absolutely love this video and you have completely inspired me to do my own conservatory. We have been quoted £2000 to have ours done and they freaked me out as said they ensure they ventilate it right which means no damp and that’s the only thing I’m worried about haha. One thing I just want to check is how can I ensure I ventilate it? As we have the same conservatory roof as you did and that always gets damp when the kitchen door is open. Have you had any issues? Jane, fabulous video. Without sounding too patronising well done you. I am a handyman and a customer (also friend) directed me to your video to ask if I can do this! Apart from arm ache I am now 100% certain that seeing your finished work I can do it too. I Have plaster boarded a few normal ceilings but never a conservatory!!! My question: as its a year later may I ask, have you noticed any condensation problems coming through from the insulation to the original corrugated plastic roof? I am assuming you took advice and the silver insulation wrap has taken care of that? Fantastic.
@LyricGrace
@LyricGrace 2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for the comments. So it’s been up about a year and a half now and there’s been absolutely no problem with condensation I think the key is getting the gaps between the roof and the foil and then the foil and the plaster boards. From what I was researching when I was researching mine those gaps stop the condensation because the air can move around freely. I have no doubt you can get it done if I can do it with no real training I’m sure you can as a handyman! Definitely have aching arms after doing it though!

Looks good....from inside but I can't imagine it does from the outside.... As for condensation , yes you've made a good job of sealing inside..but I can't see any ventilation to allow condensation to exit. Any condensation can now freeze in winter and expand. After a winter going into spring/summer you may see some cracks or damp spots in your plasterboard.

Hi. Thanks for the video - very informative. What did you do at the eaves/edges (where walls meet the roof)? Did you effectively make a vapour barrier using the insulation? Is there some airflow between top of insulation and the roof? Insulation and air tightness whilst avoiding condensation confuses me. Thanks again. Matt
@LyricGrace
@LyricGrace 2 жыл бұрын
I ended up filling the larger gaps with expanding foam, followed by filler and paint, the very small gaps I’ve left. Yes there is def airflow between the roof and insulation and then the insulation and boards. I know because there’s no condensation etc and before I used the foam I could feel it. The airflow still happens because of the way the conservatory roof is attached. Me putting a seal on doesn’t change that.

It’s flipping hard! I did it alone and yes used a tall step ladder to wedge it in with my head, shoulder etc then once you have a couple of screws in you can concentrate on the rest. I consider myself strong but even I was swearing! Sometimes I found it was better to start at the bottom and once you have ine onone on easier to wedge the next one next to it

Hi love! This is AMAZING! Has given me so much confidence! Our conservatory is exactly the same! We have 3 kids and 3 TINY bedrooms and I was HOPING to insulate the conservatory, insulate the floor & carpet and move hubby & I down there as a temporary bedroom as our kids are getting older and moving is not an option and we have just been quoted 15k by two local companies and we have a budget of £1000. A couple of questions please…. Is the difference in temp really noticeable? In the winter ours is like a fridge and summer it’s a sauna. Would u be happy to sleep in yours or is it still to much? Also , have you noticed a reduction in the rain noise? Thankyou! Well done !
@LyricGrace
@LyricGrace 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comments. So to address your questions, in summer it’s def cooler by a large amount, in winter it can still be cold as there’s no central heating in there BUT (and this is where the difference is) I use a plug in rad and open the door the temp equalises with the house quickly and also then retains the heat well. So absolutely worth it for us. We use it as an office\ playroom now all year round. The rain noise is massively less and I can conduct calls no problem in there where as before there was no way when it was raining! You can still hear it but it’s much reduced. Good luck with yours!

Hi, thank you for your video- I've found it extremely helpful! I notice you completed this project two years ago, have you noticed any issues with condensation or damp at all between the outer roof and the inner ceiling? I am keen to try this project myself but a little online research is giving me a few niggling doubts! As you have completed it some time ago, it would be great to hear how it's getting on and indeed if you have noticed any issues with it at all? How old is your roof roughly and did you have to make a watertight seal before installing the insulation? Thank you :)

Great video and loads of help. One question if I may did you have any issues with drilling into the glazing bars i.e worried about damaging the polycarbonate and causing a leak?

Have you been able to use this throughout the winter as a play room? Also how has it been during the summer? Does it stay cooler?
@LyricGrace
@LyricGrace 3 жыл бұрын
Yes we used it all winter, there’s no central heating in there so I used a small oil filled rad in the morning until the temp realised with the house but once it was warm it stayed warm all day with door open, which is a vast difference from winter before when I had hot air blow heaters on all day long! Summer has been much cooler too, used to get to 40+C in there last summer but this year not gone about 30 so I’m happy with that.

Fab video! Do you mind me asking if there's a reduction in outside noise? ( Not just from rain) I have some really noisy neighbours
@LyricGrace
@LyricGrace Жыл бұрын
Yes def but I’m not sure about neighbours noise, I’m lucky to live in a quiet area. There’s def less noise for example when helicopters fly over

Great job, how is it in the summer? Also, how easy is it drilling into the structure of the conservatory? I'm just worried about going too far in and getting a leak or something haha

It was quite easy once I found the middle of each metal beam, I use the screws in the video as I had seen others use that length too

What a great project, was always tempted to try something like this with ours but not as brave as you! Things that I was particularly concerned about was the weight of the boards and batons and the roof ventilation? Have you had any issues with either? Did you find any info on how much the existing frames can support? Really tempted now!!

No no problems so far at all and I’ve been through all the seasons. I used a thin as board as I could found and left space for ventilation between the roof and insulation and then the insulation and the boards. I didn’t find info but it seemed very strong and so I went ahead anyway after watching other professional builders do it. Please note I am not professional just a home diyer!

@@LyricGrace Fab, thanks for getting back to me! Dead interesting! And how does it look from above?
@LyricGrace
@LyricGrace 2 жыл бұрын
@@nickallan4211 not a whole lot different to be honest, I was worried it would look all shiney and odd, if anything it just looks a little darker. The polycarbonate roof as you saw in the beginning is sort of frosted (as well as dirty!) so I guess that stops it looking weird!

Hi great job well done, could you confirm if this has made a big difference in the winter? We have same conservatory with no heating, will this do the job to keep it warm? Again really well done ;)

Thanks for commenting. So you might of seen my previous comments. The conservatory isn’t actually heated apart from a small oil radiator, so if the door is not been open, it’s still chilly. However, the massive difference is that if I leave the door open and the room equalises with the house temperature, it keeps its temperature far far better than it did before so essentially it’s more of a usable room.

Excellent video, I’m about to embark on exactly the same. Now you have been living with it for some time, has it made a big enough difference to make the conservatory useable all year?

Really excellent work, looks very professional. One question, what does it look like from the outside, I.e. looking down on the roof, how tidy (or not) does the space quilt look through the polycarbonate roof panels?
@LyricGrace
@LyricGrace 3 жыл бұрын
Looking from the bedroom windows above it doesn’t look much different , I thought it would look maybe shiny or metallic but it doesn’t it just looks like a darker version of the original roof. When it’s night time and the lights are on inside obvs you can’t see the light shining up anymore if that makes sense.
