One thing home owners fear the most are the chance of termites or other wood boring insects getting into their home and causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. A really good way to prevent this is to perform your own Borate Wood Treatment using a product like Bora-Care.
The big plus of using products (like BoraCare and Timbor) that contain DOT to control wood destroying pests is that once the active ingredient diffuses into the wood it will remain indefinitely. There are not any natural forces that are able to degrade or break it down.
Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate is one of a family of borate compounds (containing boron and oxygen), which are considered absolutely toxic to insects. Borate compounds like Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate utilize a stop-feed mode of action. Stop-feed means that the active ingredient DOT disrupts the enzyme and digestive systems of the insect, preventing future digestion and causing death by starvation. In treatment of wood decaying insects like termites or carpenter ants, DOT prevents these pests from being able to digest the wood that they depend on for survival.

You're not spraying the butt-ends of the timber. The best time to treat these are before they are nailed into place in the frame; termites enter the end-grain and away they go - spray on is not absorbed to the core of the timber, so end-grain application is vital.

I'm treating some reclaimed hand hewn barn beams. There's a lot of ant tunnels that looks to be old. How long is a safe bet to wait between BoraCare application and in-home installation of these beams to make sure there's no active infestation? And can a finishing product be applied once the BoraCare dries / won't interfere with the effectiveness?
@domyown
@domyown 3 жыл бұрын
Boracare will eliminate carpenter ants if they are actively tunneling in the wood. If the tunnels are old and ants are not present, you can still treat the wood to guard against new infestations. You can apply Boracare, allow it to dry completely (about 72 hours), and then apply the sealant or finish of your choice. Once the wood is dry you can install it in your home.

Can I use Borate on wooden doors, doorcase, parquet flooring, sidings or even furniture before painting? (without the die, of course)
@domyown
@domyown 4 жыл бұрын
You can apply Boracare to just about any wood or other cellulosic material as long as the wood is raw (not painted, stained, sealed, etc.). If you are treating furniture such as a kitchen table or other items that will be used for dining or food service, then you need to use a water sealant after the Boracare is dry for food safety. Since Timbor is a powder concentrate and does not absorb as cleanly or as fully into the wood, we always recommend using Boracare for decorative wood, flooring, furniture, or other wood that may be painted or stained after treatment.

@domyown
@domyown 2 жыл бұрын
BORACARE can take up to 72 hours to dry. We would recommend to try and wait longer than 24 hours to seal up the wall. This will allow for the product to better soak into the wood. Since Boracare alone does not treat for mold if you seal up moisture, mold could be a concern. We do not recommend applying Boracare on top of zip sheathing. Boracare should only be applied to raw or untreated wood. Using a N95 mask is fine for PPE. We also recommend long pants and long shirts when applying chemicals.

You can apply Boracare using a hand pump sprayer, paint brush, or paint roller. Be sure that you mix the solution in a separate container such as a bucket as directed before putting the solution into your sprayer. If you are using Boracare to treat wood that will be used for gardening or otherwise exposed to rainfall and watering (as well as for indoor use such as furniture), then you would need to apply a water sealant after the Boracare treatment has dried and before use.

What is the difference in absorption between this new wood and the 70 year old wood in my attic?
@domyown
@domyown 4 жыл бұрын
Newer wood will have a higher moisture content than wood that has been in a house for decades, so you will get faster and deeper absorption of Boracare with newer wood than older wood. If you have very thick beams that have been in a house for decades, then you probably will not get Boracare absorbed all the way to the center of the wood.

@domyown
@domyown 4 жыл бұрын
For furniture your options are limited for treatment. If the wood is in its all natural raw state without any stains or finishes on it you can use a product like Boracare. www.domyown.com/boracare-p-100.html Boracare will absorb all the way into the wood and eliminate any infestation that is there and last for the life of the wood. It does not stain the wood or leave behind any visible residue, but becomes one with the wood and any insect that ingests it dies. If the furniture has a finish on it, you would either have to drill holes throughout it and inject something like the Boracare or a foam, or the option most go with, hire a company to fumigate it.

If there are subterranean termites already within the wood of an existing structure then you would need to follow our guide, How to Treat for Subterranean Termites www.domyown.com/subterranean-termite-treatment-guide-a-478.html , which includes a video on the application and step by step instructions on using a product to treat the colony in the soil, like Taurus SC. If you have an existing drywood termite colony, or powder post beetle/wood boring beetle, you can use Boracare www.domyown.com/boracare-p-100.html at a 1:1 ratio to treat the entire piece of infested wood and surrounding wood that could be impacted by the colony as they feed on the Boracare and die. A single application of Boracare when used per label instructions will last for the life of the wood when protected inside the structure. A soil treatment for perimeter protection against subterranean termites with Taurus SC www.domyown.com/taurus-sc-termiticide-p-1816.html would last for 10 years. It is common practice to do both on a new construction home for the optimum level of protection and control. An average drywood or subterranean termite colony can take up to 90 days to die after an application has been made to the wood or soil.

@domyown
@domyown Жыл бұрын
Bora-Care and Timbor are both borate products used to treat wood, but they could not be more different. Timbor is in a powder form that is mixed with water. It is much less expensive but it is intended more for protecting new wood only, or wood that you know does not have any issues. Timbor will only penetrate the outer layer of the wood so it is more for protection or for treating fungus on the surface of the wood. If you have an active infestation of termites, powder-post beetles or wood borers deep inside the wood then Timbor would not make it through the wood to kill these insects. BoraCare is a liquid borate but has an additive, a glycol solution, which allows the product to penetrate through the entire piece of wood, therefore it should be used any time you have an active infestation because you are guaranteed it will kill anything in the wood no matter how deep it is. Also, BoraCare will last forever in the wood so you will never have to worry about any infestations in the wood that you treat ever again. If you are referring to Timbor, then you can use that product to treat raw wood for prevention of wood-destroying insects and wood decay fungus. Timbor only absorbs about 1/4" into the wood, so it is for prevention only and not for treatment of existing insect infestations. Keep in mind, as well, that Timbor can leave a visible residue once it dries, so it would not be recommended for wood that is visible and would be stained, sealed, or painted after the application.

Very valid question. The relation is the behavior of drywood and other termite species. The newly appointed female queen is going to try and burrow in the tips of the lumber. That being said, wafer bored offers her multiple avenues and she can almost burrow anywhere within that wafer board. If your DYIing the treatment, you need to inspect the wood on a quarterly. If your not, it's highly recommended to have a WDI (wood destroying insect) program at the least on a quarterly basis. Especially if your home retains high moisture.

The SDS states that there should be no odor. However, we have been told by customers that it does tend to have a chemical smell. If we can be of further assistance please let us know.

Will borate stop dry rot?
@domyown
@domyown 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use Boracare www.domyown.com/boracare-p-100.html or Timbor www.domyown.com/timbor-professional-p-144.html to prevent or treat wood decay fungus that causes dry rot. Be sure you are using the curative rates if you already have signs of damage. Keep in mind that a borate treatment will not remove stains. You can clean the wood first with Mold Clean www.domyown.com/moldclean-p-1328.html if you need to remove any stains first.

Actually, Borate and Borax are two different active ingredients. Borax is boric acid and Bora-Care is Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate, which is water-soluble

In the future, I hope someone figures out how to build a house with materials that bugs don't eat. Our planet will have less problems up the road.
