How long can a hive/queen last and how do u replace a hive in the change it doesn’t last? How could I simplify a hive as a new beekeeper to make it easier for me? And how many times do I need to do a inspection of the hive? Thanks
@FlowHive
@FlowHive 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there, Thaks for all your questions. Firstly please see this article on the different ways to get bees: support.honeyflow.com/how-do-i-get-bees/ How long the colony will take to grow depends on your unique climate and the colony, the weather, season, what's in bloom etc... it can take any where from a few weeks to a few months for them to fill out the initial brood box. Great and important question regarding how to ensure your bees stay healthy - you learn to identify pests and diseases, conduct hive inspections :) Coupled with your own research, joining your local beekeeping club is a great way to learn this. We also have an online beekeeping course that has a one month free trial you might be interested in: thebeekeeper.org Bees live about 6 weeks but will constantly be making new brood to continue the hive, where a queen can live a couple - even up to 5 years! When she dies the bees will either make a new one or you can purchase a queen and introduce her to the hive. The Flow harvesting technology already does make it easier for the beginner beekeeper in terms of harvesting, but the aforementioned points are really important to ensure healthy bees. How often you inspect depends on your climate and the time of year so again we recommend consulting with your local beekeeping community for best approach in your region :) www.honeyflow.com/pages/bee-club-directory - Danika

If you dont catch the swarm because your not home. What do you do? Will the hive/bees left behind hatch another queen?
@FlowHive
@FlowHive 4 жыл бұрын
If your hive swarms the colony left behind will either have a virgin queen or will try and raise a new queen. To do this they need eggs less than 3 days old. You will need to inspect the remaining colony and if they don't have a queen or are unable to raise a queen you will need to purchase a queen to requeen your colony. I hope this helps - Leah.

How should the hives be oriented - ie: honey frames facing north/S/E/W? Also, should the hives be located in the shade or in the sun - especially at an elevation of 7500 ft in Colorado?
@FlowHive
@FlowHive Жыл бұрын
Hey :) As a general rule, bees like to face south/east in the northern hemisphere, and north/east in the southern hemisphere. However, keep in mind the bees are a very adaptive, wild organism and other factors come into play as well, so if you only have somewhere suitable that isn't in this direction the bees will likely adapt to it fine too. Please see this page on factors to consider: support.honeyflow.com/where-to-locate-your-flow-hive/ - Danika

Hey Ross, Thanks for your interest :) While you manage the brood box and bees the same as you would with other beekeeping style boxes (which is great you already know a lot) the harvesting is as it appears. In colder climates sometimes the Frames are better cranked with two Flow keys, but typically you'll be harvesting in Spring/Warmer months so it shouldn't often be harder to crank the Flow frames. @FlowHive
@FlowHive 4 жыл бұрын
In our area, we don't need to do this, we can simply leave the last harvest of the season for the bees, or carry out a partial harvest. In some areas having a second brood box is a good idea, to ensure the bees have additional honey stores for themselves. -Kieran

I did not one question for you guys at FlowHive. I'm aware that the flow Frames should not be exposed to direct sunlight for long exposures but could you explain why? And what is too much exposure? I ask because flow hives, just by being on the hive, are going to get some exposure to light as well work them. Is it just for long period of time? And what would happen to them if they were left out in direct sunlight for a long time? Thank you
@FlowHive

UV is damaging to food grade plastics, much like it is to our skin for long durations, if left in sunlight for hours frequently you could see these becoming brittle the same as if they were over irradiated. Exposure through inspections will not be an issue. -Kieran

How many Queens to a frame or hive? Any Princesses? How often checked? How far away from other animals should the hive be? There is a Black hornets nest close by. I plan on getting rid of. My neighbor has bees. When I install a box... It won't interest with theirs, will it. Will a new female take over and leave his female alone?
@FlowHive
@FlowHive 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Dana, There is just one queen per hive :) In very rare circumstances more have been spotted but this is the general rule. How often you inspect depends on the time of year/the health and history of your hive, but once a week is generally a good rule of thumb if only briefly to check and manage pests/diseases, but it can be less frequent than this, especially in winter this can lessen as the bees prefer to be less disturbed in these months. Your new hive shouldn't interrupt your neighbours, although some colonies do rob weaker hives at times. Your colony shouldn't be concerned about your neighbour's queen though :) To learn more we recommend joining your local beekeeping club. We also have an online course jam-packed with information that has a free one month trial: www.thebeekeeper.org Hope this helps :) Danika

Slow movements are your friend in beekeeping, the occasional sting on a finger will occur, when beekeeping without gloves, usually from grabbing a bee, or if a colony gets agitated from a sudden movement or bump. Knowing your tolerance to stings and not risking your health is really important. Even with full safety gear you can expect to be stung at some point. A smoker helps to calm the bees but even so inspecting does disturb the colony and make them aggressive. -Kieran

@FlowHive
@FlowHive 4 жыл бұрын
Dan, many beekeepers have their hives close together in their apiaries. In terms of how close the hives can be, half a metre is a good spacing, as it will ensure easy navigating between the hives. It is good to keep them facing in the same direction, to best ensure flight paths don't cross in close proximity. - Leah.
