I am 16 and started self teaching myself 5 months ago. I have the basics down (t-stop,turns,forward and backwards skate,arabesque,lunge, front crossovers (need work)and 4 variations of 1 foot glides. Im no pro for sure (cant do spins or jumps YET) but my advice to anybody looking to start is this: Stretch very often, along with exercise to strengthen your core and legs. Skate as often as u can. (For me thats once a week) Don’t let more experienced people lower your determination and motivation. Instead let them act as role models, observe how they do those tricks u wish so badly to do. Lastly, remember that to do those amazing tricks you have to step out of your comfort zone. And you will fall, it’s all part of the process. Just get back up and do it again. (:

Emma Swan i am self taught as well, but I’ve been doing it for about 2 years now (a year break i between because I fractured my hip.) I can do a waltz jump, scratch spin(ish), toe loop (almost, single) and kind of a sit spin. Being self taught is kind of annoying because sometimes you don’t get YeH technique right and completely mess up. I only do it because I love it, I don’t wanna be in competition or anything.

Emma Swan very true, but i’m sorry but it’s called a spiral not an arabesque lol, gotta separate dancers/ gymnasts from the figure skaters lol. how are you doing now? i hope you’ve still been improving and working at it. it sounds like you’ve had good starting progress! well done :)

I started competition artistic roller skating at 11 and five years later I could land a double Lutz (and jumps are harder to do on roller). Those who start after age 10 may not make the Olympics, but they can end up being darn good skaters. Don't set limits. Just keep trying to gradually improve little by little, and before you know it you'll be amazed at what you can do.

I need help with my camel. I use to be able to do it but as school started(it's been extremely stressful, my school is really competitive), I started to grow the habit of letting my right arm go up too high and accidentally let my left arm go to low (I'm a righty by the way). Its gotten so bad that I can only get only one rotation down and my arms are literally like an l. Everything is fine except my arms. Any tips on how to break this habit?

@sunflower_sunray
@sunflower_sunray 8 жыл бұрын
I have a bad habit of coming up on my toe pick. I try to lift my toes up just a bit, but that makes me unfocused and I end up losing my balance. Also, on my other spins and most of my jumps, I have a terrible time bringing my arms in. Would this be the reason I have trouble rotating in my jumps? Help please and thank you!!!
@gavinp6565
@gavinp6565 7 жыл бұрын
On your jumps, you may have trouble rotating because a. If you aren't bringing your arms in properly, then you won't be able to rotate as easy, as you said b. If you have trouble with loop jumps, you may want to ride the edge longer c. make sure you are in the proper position when jumping (ex left arm in front, inside or outside edge, etc)

Random Person what can I do to make sure my arms stay in?
@gavinp6565
@gavinp6565 7 жыл бұрын
You may just have to practice it. Maybe try to practice the position without jumping, so you get out of the habit of not bringing your arms out. Many times, it is a matter of forgetfulness, so you just have to think ahead and remember to bring your arms in. This is all I can think of

My coach wants me to keep my arms out to the side, but that feels odd to me and it seems as though all the good skaters put their arms back, for a more streamlined body position. What do you think?
@xxXThinIceXxx
@xxXThinIceXxx 9 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Ozorak I always teach a camel with the arms out, It creates a good balanced spin. Once you have a solid spin and position I let my skaters do whatever they want with there arms as long as it looks good.

Where should the weight be on the blade?
@zeel5689
@zeel5689 6 жыл бұрын
The weight has to be on the rocker section, so not too far forward because you'll spin on the toe pick, and not too far back because you can't really spin on that part of the blade. Sort of the forward 1/3 of the blade where it has the most curve. Look up the "sweet spot" on blades.

Skating has something in it for everyone who has a passion for it. Sure we all can't be Olympic champions, but we can enjoy the challenge of pursuing an activity we enjoy. I heard of an adult skater who took up the sport for the first time in her 50s and by age 65 she could land an axel (she achieved it for the first time as an older lady, not a little girl). So if figure skating is your passion, go for it.

Why is it called camel instead of something like swan? I can't disassociate camel with negative things like camel toe, kids calling you a camel for taking too long to drink from the water fountain, they spit and look disinterested in anything. It is an odd animal. This move doesn't look like a camel. It looks like a swan or a bird of some sort.
