This model of a DVOM has a diod test setting at the bottom of the selection about the 5:25 clock pointer. The diod symbol. It looks like an odd blue arrow symbol. And like the other commenter had mentioned it . . . if you didn't already know that, you're in the deep end of the pool.

With the multimeter set for the diode test (the black triangle with a line through it) and the black lead on the positive 12v post and the red lead on the casing you want to see a reading of 5, but anywhere between 4 to 6 is good. If you get a reading of 3 that is bad. A reading of 7 is also bad. 8 is totally fukt. When he reverses the leads he shouldn't read all zeros, that denotes a resistance free circuit connection, which would be a disaster for your alternator. What he should have demonstrated should have produced a reading of O.L. (meaning Over Limit, or more precisely No Circuit at all) which means that the diodes in the alternator's bridge rectifier are doing their job and preventing current from flowing backwards into the alternator from the battery, especially when the ignition is shut off, because the electromagnetic field created by that system will flash into your car's electrical system when the car is shut off which would be just as catastrophic if not more so.

I get 0mV both ways. Charing started getting bad below 2000 rpm and sounded like cwr was super charged from inside of car. 2 days later battery dropped to 6v and car stopped imediatelly. Charged battery but was immediately drained once connected (tested new battery as well). Somehow seems the alternatoeör shorts everything out. Changing to brand new one now hoping its only that

This is not for the beginner electrician, he is 2 steps ahead of the most of the DIYers. I see there are alot of people here that are new to the whole in depth DVOM and diagnostics of an alternator. I understood wbat he's talking about, and i double checked his work. He gets 2 thumbs up. 👍👍

Its not just diode pack. Its a rectifier, they are arranged in a way where AC voltage in converted into DC voltage.

Im thinking of how the multimeter picks up the current of the alternator in terms of polarity. Basically you need power and ground for it to calculate a value. So in this case, the black lead is input and the red lead is output.

10 ohms minimum as you need to get a reading of 10 ohms

I just came back and forth from your video and other video the other video has the black lead on the casing as the proper way to test. which one of you is correct?

At that point, the test is not simply for voltage (or resistance) but also the direction of current.

Unfortunately no I don't think so. Since this video a few years ago I've still been running this same alternator in the truck. Lol it may not have all its diodes functioning but it's hanging in there.

Current can only flow in one direction on a good diode, and the meter sends current, so if you have a reading both ways on both ways, it's a bad diode. However in this example, I believe he confirmed there's a connection to ground where there shouldn't be. The circuit wants the engine ground to be the only path. Make sense?

Put your meter on diode. It’s like a colored in arrow pointing to the right with a line through the back. It’s hard to explain so Look up how to set meter to diode on google or KZfaq. He didn’t do a good job explaining that. lol.

This only tests half the diodes to fully check it u need to remove diode pack...if u were getting good reading with this test

If it's a customer, He'd install a new one. But I agree. He's confirmed short to gnd, but where is it? I'd have a look at the rectifier pcb

Means the coil is touching the case. Ground fault.

POS on casing. NEG on alternator positive post. Diode mode shows “0.970” Swapping leads shows “OL” So does that mean in my case current flowing in proper direction but 0.970 seems off, correct? What does that mean for me?

when POS on casing and NEG on positive terminal im reading about 0.360 (pardon me if the decimal place is wrong, im reading what my multimeter says verbatim) im on the DIODE MODE on my multimeter, the symbol of which is an arrow with a vertical line touching ⏭️which just so happens to be the "2k" [ohms??] setting

Ohms...hes sending a slight current in one direction to test a one way diode...most people who own a multi meter know how to use it...this guy is not here to teach guys beginning level hes here to teach intermediate guys who read instruction booklet included with multi meter not diy guy who doesnt have a clue and wants to learn but calls everyone stupid because hes watching wrong viddy....js
