In the United States, some of our words definitely sound Cockney-influenced. Compare the way we say "butter" and "button." "Butter" is smooth without a glottal stop. However, we employ a glottal stop (we obstruct the air flow in the middle of the word) when we pronounce "button." Americans pronounce "button" like this: "but'n." Not at all like "butter," "better," or "batter" (which are smooth and do not feature a glottal stop in the middle). However, with the word "bitten," we use a glottal stop in the middle: "bit'n."

Great video! Amazing channel! I just subscribed! I’m an American English teacher in Spain. When I came to live in Spain, two years ago, I noticed this strange phenomenon: People here want to speak with an American accent but all their expressions are British. They want to use British learning books to learn American English. After trying to explain major differences between British and American English I gave up and I now teach Britterican English until they complain they can’t understand Modern Family or Downton Abbey without subtitles.
