I always go -45 to 45 instead of 0 to 90 to avoid that last wobble. Less stress on the machine and much smoother operation. So instead of starting with my bucket in front of the tracks, I'd start with placing my bucket 45 degrees towards the direction which I want my tracks to turn. Try that and see the difference.

Correct. You can also alternate between front and rear turns instead of 2x turns at the same end. If you practice your timing and lever control there are no delays between movements and as you complete 1x turn & put one end down, you can use the already pressurized hydraulic circuit and small momentum you still have to continue the slew motion in the same direction and do the second turn at the other end of the machine. (For 180* turns.) Another 2 considerations that can come in handy are, 1) If you apply just a small amount of downward pressure with the bucket, you can sprag (spin/turn) the tracks a complete 360* with relative ease. (Surface material characteristics permitting, of course.) 2) When tracking/tramming try time your turns where possible on a section of ground that has a slight 'hump' in it, you want to have the weight of the machine sitting mainly on the track rollers with the idler and drive fairly well weightless. *That incorrectly demonstrated jump turn does have some practical uses though. It is a handy/essential skill for tasks like pipelaying and/or trenching. (NOT for beginners, practice with imaginary pipes/trenches first. Ignore this at your own peril.) Understanding that moment where it transitioned from both track frames on the ground to just one is also a very handy skill to develop. It gives you the ability to maintain a good level of control over the machine for situations that requires the operator to 'limp' it, if it has suffered a final drive failure/issue or if you have cracked/snapped a chain link on one track. (Also handy if you can lay the track out straight and position the digger back on it, instead of just jacking the track frame and having to manovoure the track in under the machine. *Also handy when the crest of your bench collapses while your loading and you have to catch yourself I'm the back of the truck, (with one track now sitting in mid air....) prop yourself back up to the required angle/attitude and manovoure the machine back onto the bench again so both tracks are over the ground again. LoL. Happens....)

From Elko, Nv. Working in Tonapah and Goldfield, Nv. Ran loaders and haul trucks. Very minimal experience on an excavator. Started new job this week and really getting comfortable on the controls. However the guy training looks like he's doing a damn ballet with these machines and I want to get more like him with time. He's dozing right now and I'm sitting over looking the valley in Goldfield on drill pads we're making and learning how to do this and was able to try with much ease thanks to this video! Thanks guys!

I was taught to put the bucket just right of the track on the side you want to turn and to only take some weight off the machine not lift the track, it works great for me and doesn’t tear up the ground (I work on a lot of finish graded dirt) and out mechanic/operator says it’s way less stressful on the tracks and machine as a whole
@klauskarlkraus

Every machine and job is circumstional. if it works and doesn't cause too much stress on the machine and doesn't make a mess then it works.

Easier way, point the bucket the direction you want to go. If you want to rotate tracks 90°, take it in 2 parts and less chance of getting that last little flop feeling with the carbody. Start out like the video, tracks and bucket parallel with each other, now point the bucket 45° over tracks in which direction you want to go and place bucket on ground and rotate tracks until parallel with bucket (using the same technique as in the video, opposite swing and travel) and repeat these steps until the tracks are rotated the direction you want to travel. (you are literally bringing the tracks around to the bucket in every rotation, just take in smaller movements to avoid tearing up the ground with a complete 90° rotation in one movement)

I swing turn all day on my job so I dont mess up dozer work when im tracking around the job. I think its okay for your tracks if you dont do 90 degrees like this dude did. If youre just doing little 45 degree turns to find a straight line, it ends up being way faster, hardly messes up the grading, and only uses the flat part of the tracks.

any new operators that practice this do it in a flat area like the video. trying this in the mud or on a heavy grade it's possible to kick a track off if you aren't careful.

soo true i work in heavy grade terrain its so much harder to do this moves and also i have now a stone crusher on my doosan dx245NHD, its 3.5tons heavy so its a lot more harder and dangerous to operate.

Everyone says this is hard on the tracks/under carriage. So with that in mind, if you don't care about tearing up the ground it's best to just turn normal? I always just did a jump turn to get me turned quicker, never really thought about it being hard on the under carriage before.

I can drive, however, I want to be an expert in operating heavy machines e.g excavator. Thank you.

build a berm on either side of the pipe if possible and lift over it without touching the pipe. if that's not possible then you have to straddle it which is a pretty advanced technique

@@joeyj1617 that's totally fair! Excavators are weird pieces of kit to get to used and can be rough as guts! Also a little scary and daunting.
