Wax isn't just for candles. Also known as hot wax painting, the encaustic medium uses heated, pigmented beeswax to create one-of-a-kind wall art. You're sure to love the results of using this timeless medium with a stencil and luxurious gold embellishing wax.

It looked like you were using regular stretched canvas for acrylic and oil painting. For whoever is watching, you really should use Clayboard or wood panels for encaustic. Stretched canvas allows movement of the substrate, and can cause the wax to crack or peel off. Just some friendly advice. Otherwise, great video! Thanks!😀❤️

Fusing is the term for ensuring each layer sticks to the next. The wax doesn’t stick to the substrate without encaustic gesso unless you are working on wood. These are so beautiful. I really hope they last and don’t flake away over time ❤

Kari, thank you for sharing, I wouldn’t have thought of canvas, I also saw someone using tiles. I think the smaller canvases would work rather than the large. Large might sag, unless spiratically done.

Have you ever tried encaustic gesso? Thinking that might help avoid the wax pulling away from canvas. Enjoyed your lesson. Has inspired me to pull out my encaustic supplies and play.

Kari, do you use any kind of hardening agent like damar in your wax? I thought your project was a good introductory idea. Thank you ... with blessings.

Can you share some info on that stencil? What's it called? It almost looks like a silkscreen in the way you are squeegeeing the wax through it.

Question about sealing or varnishing this medium- is this necessary to protect the artwork? If so, what should be used? Also, can you use acrylic paint with this for a mixed media process?
@TracyDaviesart
@TracyDaviesart 3 ай бұрын
You don’t varnish wax. Heating acrylic paint is dangerous. Perhaps watch a video about encaustic by a company like enkaustiko or Cama. To make an encaustic shine - buff it really well with a piece of nylon stocking.

@@KariCaldwellStudios thank you so much for your timely response - I'm going to dive in & give this a try. My hope is to be able to make journal covers with this method. Do you have any extra tips/tricks for that? My only real concern is what to put on the top as a "SEALER" so it becomes a sturdy surface that will last as a journal cover.

@@KariCaldwellStudios I have been wondering if I could use some myrrh. I would also enjoy the ambience of it. To me, part of the allure of encaustic is to have a non-toxic experience. I watched a lady years back on YT who wanted a cold wax so she could be more free of all the heat and melting, and she created a medium using pure orange oil. the little canvases are sweet. you could do a whole wall of those. Would ‘t want to go much bigger, before using wood. Am enjoying this! And your work is resonating what I love currently about mono type printmaking also.

@@KariCaldwellStudios Actually, the resin used in encaustic is damar wax, which is not at all toxic. It's so safe that it's used to seal wooden crates that transport our organic fruits from farms to supermarkets.

Exactly. I was going to say this. Soy wax always contains paraffin, it's part and parcel of the soy wax making process- no way around it. Therefore, soy wax is actually Toxic. But it's fine to melt it in order to clean our brushes ;)
