Learn to do the French Knots Stitch in just 2 minutes.
The French knot is one of the easiest of all knots. However, it is often hailed as one of the most difficult-to-handle or difficult-to-do stitches. This is so much so that learners often hate to do this stitch. It is only a matter of getting the hang of it. This stitch can be used to do tiny flowers or as a filling stitch to fill in small circles and the center of flowers. Many closely done French Knots can give a ‘woolly’ appearance and be used for textures.
French Knot is also known as
Punto de nudo francés [ES], Point de noeud [FR], Knötchenstich [DE], Punto nodini [IT], Ponto de nó francés[PT], Franska knutar [SV].

I don't know why so many people are afraid of, or frustrated with the French Knot. I know the tension can be a problem and if you don't maintain it you get a wobbly looking mess of thread you have to take out. Taking out a French knot can be a real pain in the neck. I learned to make French knots when I was a child and I have loved them ever since. I am looking forward to learning the many other stitches in the knot family.

😄 I wouldn't even attempt taking out a French knot... I will just snip it out!

@@SarahsHandEmbroidery 😄I know what you mean. I am working on a small project that has some pinecones on it. The cone caps are made with French knots. One of the knots came out rather wonky so I tried taking it out. I ended up cutting out the whole cap and starting over since the whole thing looked rather odd. Thank God for embroidery scissors.✂

Hi Sarah, you make every stitch so easy to understand. I have a question please: I'm working on a mistletoe berry using a satin stitch, and I'm supposed to do a French knot in the middle. Which would you do first? The satin or the French knot? Thank you!

I would suggest doing the Satin Stitch first and then the French Knot, so that it stands out like on the actual berry! ☺
