I have had many requests to do a show demonstrating intarsia and instead of just jumping right in to the traditional methods of intarsia, I thought I would introduce my "cheaters intarsia" as a gateway to get into the traditional methods.
If you are interested in the free pattern for this project, you can find it here.

As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to stop by the channel and tune in to today's episode. It is truly appreciated.

The flocking idea is great!!! The texture of flocking is perfect for a Santa Bear.

I like your approach and philosophy. I have been doing intarsia for about 15 years. During that time I became exposed to some fantastic artists whose work defies description. However there exists a lot of elitism in the ranks. Some folks take satisfaction in providing long lists of exotic woods used in their projects, many of which I never heard of, nor know the sources. Most are super costly and many toxic. In recent years I have gone "hybrid" in my relatively simple projects. I am not ashamed of using dyes and thinned paints to achieve results without a worldwide search for exotic woods. Your use of flocking adds a new dimension and I salute your efforts to bring this art form to more people who can enjoy their creations in a simpler, satisfying way. Incidentally there is irony in that most of the natural colors of exotic woods age to shades of brown upon exposure to UV radiation (sunlight). Not a problem with most dyes and paints.

You are right about the woods losing their natural colours. Purple Heart is the main example that comes to mind. Thanks for all the kind words on the project. People have to realize who they are making these pieces for and who they have to please and the answer to both of those questions is "themselves". They don't need fancy woods or fancy techniques and their version of intarsia is just as valid as the person who cuts each piece individually using exotics as their stock. Woodworking is woodworking and the important part is that you jumped in and tried it and had fun. Thanks for tuning in and for the kind words and support. It's very much appreciated.

You'll get this sort of person no matter where you go and what you do, always think they are better than everyone else ... I don't use power tools, I only use exotic hardwoods, I don't used nails/screws/glue ... big deal, it's the end result which matters ... if someone puts their heart and soul into a piece then that's all that matters.

Thanks very much for the inspiration, I've always been interested in intarsia woodwork, but just never had time and of course other interests get in the way, so now that I watched a pro do this it actually looks quite relaxing and fun.😊 Andrew

Hi Kenny! I made something similar about 3 years ago for Christmas. Came out really nice but I confess, I did not do the flocking which was a nice touch. Had flock, never thought of it. That is what separates us, your artistic bent. Once I get retired from my big projects I think I will do more of these. I really enjoyed it. Regards, Bill

That's a fair assessment as per the technical definitions of the term Ken. If I would have kept the wood natural, it would have been considered intarsia. Painting or altering their colour in any way suddenly turns it into segmentation. Regardless of what we choose to call it, I call it fun. Thanks for tuning in this week.

Hello, I'm really impressed with your work and the cutting details. Congratulations. Can you tell me more about your paint, which seems to be a kind of powder? I'm in France and don't know if it exists where I live. Thanks a lot :)
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 2 ай бұрын
The paint, is actually adhesive and the powder is pulverized suede. This is a process called flocking and I have a tutorial demonstrating it on the channel. You can find it here if you are interested. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rbKAn7SdlbCoXWQ.html If you search the internet for flocking supplies, you will quickly find the material that you are looking for. I hope this helps but if you have more questions, you can feel free to ask and I would be more than happy to help if I can. Thank you for tuning in to the show.

It's cheat intarsia or not real intarsia because you don't use exotic woods, yeah whatever is what I'd say to that!!! The technique involves cutting out wood, shaping and fitting it together, which is exactly what you have done ... the use of various types of wood, paint or finish doesn't detract from the skill of creating the piece in the first place ... absolutely fantastic result and if anything expands the technique by adding new methodology as to how it can be done 👍
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 9 ай бұрын
I couldn't agree with your more Barry. By reducing the amount of specialty woods and increasing the methods to colour or texture them, it opens up the art form to a much wider audience. This project is accessible to all skill levels and I hope that more folks give it a try after seeing this video. Thanks for tuning in to the show this week.

Never be scared to try something new Paul. Even it is "sucks" you should still be proud of it because it is a stepping stone to the next one which will be better. The next one will be better than the second one etc. Everyone has to start somewhere. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

Hi Ken I made my bear and was looking at a few other pics online and I noticed the foot is raised so I came back to video to see if you cut out at an angle but I didn’t see that. Did you just cut out a riser for the two feet? Thanks for the inspiration
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 9 ай бұрын
I did not raise the two feet Matthew. There is nothing on the pattern to show or suggest that raising the feet is required. That being said, if someone want to raise the feet to give a little more dimension to the project, there's nothing wrong with that. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.
