How to start ashtanga yoga?
With the right alignment would be my best bet! Drilling in a good alignment and modifications if needed is really important in ashtanga yoga.
Check out this quick ashtanga tutorial to learn the alignment queues for our beginning pose: samasthiti, equal standing.
In this video we jump right into the breakdown of this asana (pose). I give you 13 queues to correct your alignment, which I know is A LOT. Pick up 3 or 4 to work with at the beginning and work with that. Over time as you drill the right alignment for Samasthiti they will come naturally, and you don't even need to think about them.
Let me know if you have also learnt other instructions from your yoga teacher, as these are just the ones that I have learnt, but I'm sure there are other ways as well to achieve this pose.

So not just standing there. "Active" means flexing somewhat or more than somewhat?

Active means to bring those muscles alive that help the alignment. Pressing feet into the floor, keeping inner thighs active, lifting kneecaps, lifting the pelvis and also lifting the chest, while dropping the bottom two ribs back towards the hipbones. A lot going on :)
