Here's a tumbao that the Late, Great Armando Peraza would do. He had many variations of the tumbao, but this has always been one that I've truly enjoyed.
Armando's character and enthusiasm always seemed to translate into his playing. One that will never be mimicked or replaced. This is for you Mr. Peraza. Thank You!

Eric, Thank-you for this wonderful tribute to Armando. I had the honour of teaching with Armando for a week on Cortes Island in 2000. Armando was all about the music. I don't think he was too particular about the position or the instrument, He told me "give me a chair and I will make music." He was very agile and besides being a great percussionist, he was a skilled boxer and baseball player..

Caravanserail!!!!!! Paradise Album!!!! Kiss from Paris France. Armando had such a simplicity in his style, a marvelous natural. Then arrived my Brother Raul Rekow. You talk about thing that i am alone in my head to feel since 30 years I love Santana and percussion. Nobody around me in Paris knows about those things.

That tumbao is actually very similar to a triplet configuration in the way that it is accented in its eighth note phrases. He worked very closely with Billy Cobham when he was touring with John McLaughlin & Carlos Santana in the early '70s. Billy pioneered that form in jazz-fusion drumming, and Armando accompanied him perfectly as a counterpart. It opened that whole band up to some very free improvised playing. Just that tumbao in and of itself shows how much he influenced contemporary music at a very high level.

Armando was one of the rare drummers that when he solo'd his hands would go high and would come down with great speed and position. Check him when he and Mongo jammed together. That impressed the hell out of me!

Love Armando. You've probably seen it but in case not, check out the live performance of Saoco with Mongo and Armando. Armando is so chill, so relaxed all the way through. His phenomenal bongo work very apparent on the Santana Borboletta album.

Oh I loved what he was communicating... the feel. My fave is his "flam". As simple as it might be, it's like a voice over a room of voices while playing any kind of drum. Conga, Djembe, Darbuka etc... Loving it.

Nice tumbao Eric. I like when you say something like: "Is not a matter of technique, is about feeling". Gerardo Rosales says he does not play the modern style but more like Barreto or Tata, because that's the way he feels good. Another example is how Montalvo doew his slap, a crazy thing, but that is his style 😅

It's amazing how he was able to change the sound of Santana but not change Santana 47 years old in 1972 when he joined up and stayed with him for 20 yrs. Of course everybody knows on gitano from The amigos album he wrote the song and sung it

Greetings Eric, another very interesting and enjoyable video, I have been an admirer of the late, great AP since I first got into the music of Santana in the mid 70's and saw him live many times.I love the way you used a short clip from the Santana/Shorter band concert at the Montreux jazz Festival in '88.Probably the greatest jazz/rock /latin fusion gig in history!! AP was 65 then and I recall a couple of comments by Carlos about AP: "You will never see Armando walking like a tired duck",and, " When Armando plays the congas, that's Africa talking to you ,man" You are absolutely right in that AP was not technically flash, he did not have to be, it was his 'feeling' that he projected and everyone felt it and connected with it, became part of it. This is a wonderful tumbao and many thanks indeed for breaking it down. I am about to try it for the first time and hopefully get the 'swing' of it. I really look forward to your bi weekly posts. All the best to you and yours.

Always waited for New York radio's Symphony Sid to play a Latin number by pianist George Shearing's group in the late 1950s because Armando Peraza was featured on congas. Not much laterr saw Shearing's trio? quartet? at beautiful Carnagie Hall. Peraza would come from the wings to play the Latin tunes. He would spread the chart (music) on the floor and read (I suppose) while sitting behind 2 congas. Loved his playing, especially the slap which really cracked.

Hi Eric I'm a new subscriber and I'm really enjoying your recounts of the great congeros of out times. I just have one request, your lessons would add more clarity for me if you played them against a clave or a count of some kind. Or even against an audible pulse. Or if you can, transcribe the rhythms. Any of these solutions would be the icing on the cake for me and maybe other as well. Keep up the good work my friend.

Hola Eric, you are so cool. Not quite as cool as your boy, yet you are very cool. Ah! Armando Peraza groove que chevere. Carlos Santana once said something like this in an interview when asked about the evolution of his music"my music changed when Armando Peteza came in." No wiser words ever spoken. Carlos gave Armando Pereaza his props, resoect, recognition and without Carlos so many would never have heard Armando's groove. If you don't know who Armando Pereza is a duh! Yeaaaa you can't really do that melody with just two congas BUT.... you can still do the pattern... Just hit the second note (what I would do on the third conga) on your tumba. So it would be 2 on your tumba and then the same two on your conga... The melody wouldn't sound the same but at least you'd be able to practice the pattern.
