If you're new to Magic Loop, doing the Chinese Waitress Cast-On in the round can seem overwhelming. This video shows you every step so you can cast on for your next hat with confidence.
To do the Chinese Waitress Cast-On in the round:
1. Place a slipknot on one end of a circular needle. Leave a short tail (6"). The slipknot does not count as a cast-on stitch and will be removed later. Hold the needle in your left hand.
2. Take the other end of the circular needle in your right hand and cross it behind the left-hand needle, to the right of the slipknot.
3. Tension the yarn in your right hand.
4. Bring the yarn up and over the left-hand needle, then around the back of the right-hand needle in a figure-8 motion.
5. Pull the stitch on the right-hand needle through the two loops on the left-hand needle.
6. Remove the right-hand needle from the stitch.
7. *IMPORTANT* With your fingers, un-twist the stitch towards you so that the right side of the loop is the one coming from the working yarn.
8. Re-insert the right needle into the stitch from front to back, crossing it behind the left-hand needle.
9. Bring the yarn up and over the left-hand needle, then around the back of the right-hand needle in a figure-8 motion (this is the same as step 4).
10. Pull the stitch you just made between the two loops on the left-hand needle and, in the same movement, through the stitch already on the right-hand needle.
11. Repeat steps 6-10 until you have cast on the number of stitches required for your project.
12. Place the stitch that is on your right-hand needle on your left-hand needle. This is the last stitch of the cast-on. As you will remove the slipknot, this should give you the right number of stitches for your project.
13. Slide the stitches onto the cable of the needle. Divide them in two and pull out a long loop of cable between the two halves of stitches. Push the stitches onto the needle tips.
14. *IMPORTANT* Push the slipknot off the tip of the front needle and tug the yarn so that the slipknot undoes.
15. Place the needle with the working yarn on it in the back. Make sure there are no twists in the stitches.
16. Bring the working yarn between the needle tips and over the back of the needle.
17. Slide the back needle to the right and "fly" it around so that it faces the left needle. Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle as if to knit.
18. Use the working yarn that is on the back cable to knit the first stitch. Knit across the stitches on the front needle. You have completed half a round.
