great video guys. This is something I always try to hit but Rob's clarifications will really help with my success rate. personally I think this should be taught to newbies before the triangle conventional ambar an omoplata. I have had way more success with this sub than any of those others

how many names are there for this technique; ude gatame, reverse armbar, inverted armbar, violin armbar, and there's one more but I forget. I haven't seen many taps to this when world class guys grapple because it's hard to get enough power to really dislocate the elbow, but John Danaher actually figured out a way to get enough leverage to really break it and also turn this into a sweep, which Gordon Ryan did to Buchecha last year which was beautiful.

A bit of adjustment and you‘ll get Hiza-Gatame which does more leverage.

Does the thumb of the opponent need to be facing down ?? Looks like the palm is facing up?? I guess it does not matter but I dont know
@merziinarie6266
@merziinarie6266 Жыл бұрын
The thumb facing depends on the force you push toward the elbow. For example If your force direct to the ground, the opponent thumb should point toward the sky. In contrast if your force lift the elbow up, the thumb should face down instead. You got the point, right?

Make sure that your groin is at the bend in your opponent's elbow. After that you want to have your opponent's other arm between both of your feet. Then you must hug your opponent's arm and try and bridge. Normal arm bars don't work on me 80-90% of the time because I'm double jointed in just my arms and fingers and able to get my arm out. earlier today I was put into 2 or 3 arm bars and able to get out, it's that kimura that gets me.

@edmcguigan3501

That sub is my bread and butter Kip. The escape is actually to either get past the frame on your neck and drive into the opponent so your elbow is at his neck or else to rotate the arm counter clock wise and pull it out. You can't pull straight out if the lock is on. As you get more expert you learn to take advantage of the escapes. With the arm extended like that there is an omoplata to go to, a kimura if they see the threat early and try to get the hand back towards their legs. 70% of my taps are a variation on this and the guys who get out usually do it with pure strength.

Thanks for the reply. I can't speak from experience; I'm an Isshin-Ryu karate brown belt and Judo blue belt thinking of entering the awe-inspiring world of BJJ. So speaking solely from an observational standpoint, I'm looking at the video at 4:27 to 4:31, only 4 seconds but a fight can change in much less time than that. At this point, he's preventing the arm from moving up with both hands, but only preventing downward movement with his own neck. If the defender (Stephan in this case) were to let his wrist go limp, and especially considering conditions such as no-gi and sweaty/slippery, it really looks like at this point, he could just pull right out and stand up (or dive into side control.)
@edmcguigan3501
@edmcguigan3501 5 жыл бұрын
Definitely a much lower percentage in no gi and sweaty. That part of my game breaks down with sweaty guys in short sleeved rashguards. The control, underhook arm clamp is still very good and allows you to get out on an angle but you need to be ready for them to escape and have a follow up. When they tuck their elbow to escape you have an opportunity to move for the back but you need to be quick ( but that's why a geezer like me struggles in no-gi ).
