How to do Whirlybirds on skis (my best tips)

Whirlybirds / Whirly turns / Piste spins / Pirouettes on skis will practice some important skiing skills like steering, for and aft balance, weight transfer from ski to ski and independent leg movements.
With a few simple tips I explain how to do Whirlybirds, to make it as easy as possible for you to learn.
With the Whirlybird movement in your toolbox, you will gain control and confidence and have a bunch of new creative options in your skiing.
In my opinion it looks really cool and it is a fun way to improve your ski technique.

Day one skiing yesterday and I did this quite a few times..... Certainly not on purpose but I didn't fall

Jumping straight to advanced moves, @nathankuhn3811! 😄 It sounds like you have some level of athleticism, which will help you a lot. If you want to stop the rotation and don't want to spin all the way round, you can try finding you balance on the middle of your foot. I hope this helps. /Janus

Great video. I keep trying to learn whirlybird - but during the second half of the turn ('back-turn') the inside edge of my uphill ski gets stuck on the snow. Thanks for the video, hopefully leaning back would help with that. Your videos have great production value and are extremely helpful. Please do a tutorial on carving.

Thanks for your comment, Amlan Gupta! I think you are right, that maybe the leaning back part will help with freeing the inside edge of the uphill ski to get stuck. And thanks for your request about carving. We definitely do have some plans to create content about carving. It is one of our most requested topics. You are welcome, Mark Hayley! Awesome goal and awesome that you visit Trysil! You will be able to practice Whirlybirds on the exact slopes in the video. We went to Trysil three times 2 years ago and thats when we recorded the material for all our videos from Trysil (The pole plant videos, one ski videos, Two Keys to parallel Skiing, the Hockey Stop video etc.). Trysil has a special place in my heart since I have skied there at least one week each year since 1992, where learned my first real slalom turns on the hills next to "Skihytta". I also spent a whole winter there just skiing in my early twenties. As much as I would love to go there for skiing in the coming months, I will be based in Denmark and travel to ski mostly with the ski team I manage, and hopefully another production trip with Inspirational Skiing. Trysil is unfortunately not on the schedule at the moment, but many things are not set in stone yet. I like the idea of meeting up with people following our content and maybe offer skiing lessons, so maybe that will be an opportunity at some point. /Janus

its easier when base edge is on 1* angle, with base angles like 0 or 0.5 its more likely catching the edge :D

Do you need twin tips for this? I assume it does help?

Thanks for your question, @jan-lucako2042. You are right, twin tip skis do help a bit and they eliminate the risk of your tails hooking into the snow. However, it is totally possible on regular skis, and the risk of hooking your tails is not that significant if the snow is fairly even. I often do this move on regular racing type skis.
