I totally forgot to talk about the brush pen! Unfortunately, I couldn't get comfortable with it, so I used my beloved Neptune brushes to paint the portrait! ^^

I have the palette of Sakura koi to, the mine has 24 colors, i dont like so much the brush too, i think is to small, but i use anyone that has the water storage, because in my City is so hard to find a paint brush to watercolour... I really like your draws and you are so talent, i want it to know what type of college you did or do, i only have sixteen and i still dont decide what area of art do in college

I use white watercolor once my paints have dried, to get a light white layer over my painting- typically to get a fog-like cloud or haze, lighten something without losing the original color’s opacity, create stars on a night sky, etc. I could use white acrylic or ink, but usually I want my watercolor painting to be entirely watercolor-texture.

I would say paper is the most important supply. You can make great paintings with cheap paints and brushes if you paint on high-quality paper (like Arches), but not viceversa

I'm sorry you had to start over, that paper didn't work out for me either, but there's no real replacement for a quality 100% cotton paper when you do a lot of layers. I am excited though - Strathmore just announced new sketchbooks made with cotton on their Instagram. That will be nice to have a higher quality paper in a journal for travel and they tend to be an affordable brand. Her skin looks so beautiful with all the different colors in it, especially the green/teal blue shadows, and the red/pink near her finger tips. I appreciate you talking about creating that illusion of skin out of a lot of colors. Sometimes I don't think about it enough while painting and just reach for a diluted burnt umber and a red for blush. Green is never a color I think about when I think "skin" lol :)

Beautiful work! It's not always easy to find the right paper for the right subject. I personally do best with my portraits using 100% cotton rag paper. Strathmore has that in their line called Gemini. I like Winser & Newton 100% cotton the best because its internally sized. It's wonderful.

Sakura makes amazing products, I love their micron pens for abstract scratching shadows! It's maybe a weird question but how come your paper seems to "eat" the paint? when you apply it, it looks pretty vibrant but then when it dries it gets all pretty and smooth and muted! When I try making those same abstract effects, they always turn out way too vibrant when they dry up, while I want them natural and muted! Do you think that's an issue with my paint or rather the paper? I use hot pressed Hahnemühle Brittania paper and W&N Cotman watercolors. Or do I just need to add more water?

Hi! thanks for sharing, very nice and interesting :) Question though: I'm looking for a side-by-side comparaison of simple watercolour, watercolour+coloured pencil, and eventually watercolour+gouache… I can't find anything but I'm sure it must exist - any pointers? Otherwise a video on that would be great!

It's always fun watching your process!! You made great use of the supplied materials, while leveraging other materials as needed. Your detail work here is beautiful as always, and the loose pink flower petals are a stroke of genius!! I was thinking maybe she had just destroyed a bunch of flowers. One question: Do artists usually mean "canvas left" or "stage left" when they refer to something that's on the left side of a figure? (For a few seconds I was wondering which eye you focused on first, but it looks like it was the "canvas left" eye.) Great job!! Your finished portrait looks perfectly at home in that fancy frame!!
