A young member of my family can draw from memory and use his imagination to brilliant effect. I'm an artist but need some form of reference to guide me. This is an excellent tutorial, something new to me. Highly recommended. Many thanks!

I attended life drawing classes for many years at New York's Art Students League. I developed the practice over time of nearly always beginning by laying in the shapes and position of the torso and pelvis, adding the head and limbs afterward--particularly in shorter poses, (1, 5, 10, 15 and 25 minute poses). In longer poses, depending on the model's pose, I might sometimes start by laying in the shape of the head and moving on from there. However, for me, getting the action of the torso and pelvis first and then adding the dependent forms (head and limbs) always worked best. (My first teacher, Gustav Rehberger, a former illustrator, had two small pieces of 2" x 4" lumber, one slightly longer than the other--one representing the torso and the other the pelvis--that he would bring out and manually demonstrate all the ways in which the two forms could move and twist in relation to each other. In this manner, he emphasized and reminded us to look for and capture the independent actions of the two parts of the trunk in the figures we were drawing.)

From my experience? Try using cylinders as a shape to base them on, they’re way easier to angle? Reference and even flat imagine in different perspective. Than look up a little about arms and how they work anatomy wise and go from there, certain muscles and bones show more or less depending on where the angle is. The arm has a lot of shapes you can break it down into further, so I’d suggest just keep breaking it down enough til it works for you. For me? Cylinders because they have any points and are roughly pretty close shape wise to what actual limbs are and have less dimansions and points than any other shape like cubes or prisms You could easily be more of a prism person than I am, so give it a shot!

If your struggling with proportion, you might be able to use that to your advantage by forced perspective. You focus on specific body parts than the entire thing, which can be overwhelming.

Some people use a head ratio measurement, you make your figure a certain number of your figures heads tall, this ratio might vary between art styles but generally I use 6 or 7 heads if they're taller
@xXIronPeachesXx
@xXIronPeachesXx Жыл бұрын
You can measure the body in sections too, say a photo of someone standing you can see if their legs take 1/3 of the total height etc and use this to reference your work. Get a string, pliable craft write wire , or thin strip of paper, cut it to size of your reference , mark where the hips shoulders etc start and end. you can visually check foreshortening this way by tilting it and bending it to the angle. This will serve as an active reference for observation based length and can be reused for multiple works

Is your figure drawing course thorough enough that a beginner (been grinding the fundamentals for about 5 or 6months now) can see alot of improvement from it? Im just wondering if its structured well. Ive learned alot from youe videos but I just want to make sure before i invest anything
@aelion7761

As always your videos are very informative! Btw I have problems drawing poses which are non dynamic. Like someone sitting down reading a book or an expressive pose which has very subtly bends. Maybe it is due to drawing too much dynamic poses with a lot of squash and stretch?
@lovelifedrawing
@lovelifedrawing Жыл бұрын
that's a super interesting one. almost every pose has some squash and stretch, even someone just standing straight as long as you don't look at them straight from the front. and if it really doesn't, then you can still find assymetry to build visual interest, and emphasise that by varying your edges. so you can make a pose feel alive, with blood flowing through the person, even if it's not 'dynamic' by using those same ideas, with some practice

Hello. what pens do you use? are those charcoal pencils? do you have a video in which you present material? So far I've only ever drawn figures with a pencil, but I can't really get any further. My wife studied art and gave me a few tips that I didn't want to do. I just always want to draw realistically in a comic style. She also said that I should first draw a little more roughly and learn how to hatch and see angles. unfortunately I don't understand english. But maybe I'll take a closer look at your videos. best regards.

@@irmabecx4758 He' sayin he's using blending stump in the start. How is that possible? I thought there was no color on them, just something used to blend. Hope you know the answer here also!
@irmabecx4758
@irmabecx4758 Жыл бұрын
@@sunnord7634 It's possible because he has used the blending stump as a blending stump before he used it to draw with. It gets dirty, no? It's the same as using a dirty rag or tissue, The stump is dirty with pastel, that's why he can draw with it. If the stump was brand new he wouldn't be able to. And of course the point of using a dirty stump for the initial lines is that it won't put down too much pigment and therefore be easier to erase. :)

Paper paper ,came along some really rough grain paper fuzzy cotton Mishmash pretty sweet, fun.😂 I wish I had more time to spend sketching, I do a fair bit in the cab at the taxi ranks , a bit of looking at the traffic lights, maybe a quick draw here and there...what I saw on your sketch needed no reference picture to me, I got it even without further rendering,,I need to pump out more than one anything, from reference per day the least andmaybea bit bettergradepaper, likethisi foundi like🤔🫣🤣 when I look at the reference I do much better
