Here are the basics of constructing circles and cylinders in two point perspective. This is is a skill that should be in the toolkit of every product designer and industrial designer. Practicing this process will help, but it is very important to understand the principles explained here, as this skill underpins many of the processes in my other videos for the designer.
If you're feeling generous, I'd very much appreciate the support - www.buymeacoff... - thank you very much!

Currently I'm in seventh grade, and am in an art class, we're working with two point perspective. It has finally reached the time where we start our project, and I have some huge ideas for what I'm going to do [very space like/futuristic] and I told my teacher this. Then she told me "doing circles in two point is REALLY hard, so learn how to do them quick if you're gonna do it for your project". I found this video, and I think with a little practice, I'll be set for the project! gotta shoot for that A!

Andy Burns ok that was mean. the demonstration on how to draw a ellipse is so informative, when i was learning to draw them for program i was applying for this was the most helpful tutorial i found and i practiced pages and pages to get my hand comfortable with it. i can now draw an accurate ellipse without the guidelines. i was just complementing how steady this guys hand is because of how many years of practice he put himself through. relax and practice.

@productdesignermaker

Andy Burns thanks for your input. I find that I learn by watching others and listening carefully to what they’re saying. The more people I can watch, the more I can find snippets of advice that work for me. Each of these bits of information sit somewhere in the back of my mind, and when I’m practicing (incidentally.... there’s a lot of that), I find myself being influenced by all the good bits. The aim of my videos is to help people speed up the process of learning. Almost like I was taking all the good bits and concentrating them for others. There is a limit to how much people will take on board, so I keep my videos really short and to the point. I will, in due course, be making a series of videos to help with the basics, such as body position, handling of the pen/pencil etc. It’s not possible to put all of this in one video, so the video you are commenting upon assumes some basic knowledge.

It’s just muscle memory from practicing lots. Get comfortable, lock your wrist, mostly lock your elbow and work from your shoulder. Remember the flat spots at both ends of the curved line. Exaggerate the flat spots when you draw those, then you’ll have a bit of muscle memory already. Don’t try too hard. Don’t have high expectations to start with. Practice. Hope this helps.

Hi. I'm studying perspective from "How to Draw, Scott Robertson/Tomas Bertling's book" and from "Marshal Vandruff's Video Lesson". In both materials they defend (I'm simplifying) that you achieve a "perfect" square in perspective starting from a correct elipse. You started with a square then inserted the elipse. I ask: How do you know what you drawn is a "perfect" square in perspective? Please, notice I'm not criticizing/correcting you. I just wanna know this, because I am having difficulties in the elipse pages and can't go forward. Thanks!
@productdesignermaker
@productdesignermaker 5 жыл бұрын
Luciano Salomoni Hi. I’m unfamiliar with these two sources. I’m attempting to simplify the the process of drawing circles in perspective with this method. If you’re asking how to ensure your square in perspective is actually square (as opposed to being slightly too tall or long for example), you’re correct that this is not always straightforward. Practice helps the designer to recognise if the square is square, or not. This is why I would always draw with construction lines first. If it becomes clear that my square isn’t quite correct (proportionally), then I rework my construction lines. It is often when starting to draw the curved lines, that we see our squares aren’t correct. I haven’t come across a method of drawing squares from ellipses. I’m unsure how that would work. Hope this helps.... at least a little!
@LucianoSalomoni
@LucianoSalomoni 5 жыл бұрын
@@productdesignermaker Yes, your method is quite simple, easy and quicker. I'm only afraid of the doubt I'm drawing a really square (even not knowing if this is crucial on sketching, anyway). Thanks your feedback!
@productdesignermaker
@productdesignermaker 5 жыл бұрын
Luciano Salomoni I wish I had a more definitive answer for you, but my feeling is that you will know if your square is square, when you draw the curved lines. If the ellipse looks wrong, you’ll know straight away. ‘How to make the square square in perspective every time?’.... hours of practice I’d say. Please let me know if you find a better answer (that’s still accessible to the masses) at some point. Best wishes.
@1PPPete
@1PPPete 4 жыл бұрын
@@LucianoSalomoni Well you can't be perfect when you use just estimation. If you want to be really precise you can use descriptive geometry. For example architects before the computers drawn the object in 2D as a top plan view and section side view, set the center of projection, height of horizon and position of the plane... And then you can these two views transfer precisely into the perspective by obtaining distance from VP and height from horizon for any point... You would estabilish things like building outlines, main starcases, roofs, windows and then you could eyeball the rest for example.

@@lukeunderwood5096 my knowledge of schools in the USA is thin really. We’ve got some good universities here for product/industrial design.... Brunel, Loughborough, Nottingham.... and more.

Where do you imagine your vanishing points to be?
@productdesignermaker
@productdesignermaker 8 ай бұрын
It’s hard to describe in a sentence or two, but essentially, the vanishing points are way off the page. The closer they are, the more wide angle the sketch. Moving them further away, the shape is more how we would see it naturally. In these sketches, I’m using two point perspective, but we would normally see a third point below the object. The three vertical lines that I’ve sketched would meet at a point way below the page. I hope this helps. I have a course on perspective that is likely to be ready in the Spring.

Hi, I'm sorry but I think it's false. After you've drawn the square and the median lines, time 3:00, we can see that the closer part of the square seems smaller than the other one, it should be the contrary. I think it's better to draw diagonals on first, in order to find the exact center with perspective, and then drawing the median lines.

No. His freehand square is better than mine with a ruler. Of course someone who’s a pro will make it look easy. It’s not. This guy doesn’t understand his skill level is above the normal persons. Where are his vanishing point. He eyeballs vanishing points perfectly. This is not a vide for beginners

Thanks very much for the feedback. It’s flattering to read your comment, but you make a very valid point. I think I’m assuming a certain level of skill (perhaps wrongly) from the viewer, but really hoping that this video is used in conjunction with my first video on sketching ‘how to sketch in 2 point perspective’.
