I like how you actually took a Bob Ross approach with this Video, by talking about dnd life lessons, while drawing. Ngl this video had a similar chill vibe.

The thumbnail immediately got me laughing & nodding, like "Yep, that really is the vibe you have" 😅. Had to check it out immediately, and the video did not disappoint. The map was fun, lots of good tips, and the cross-hatching really took it up a notch. 10/10 would watch more like this 😁

I have to be honest, at the begining I thought it looked quite bad, and adding the big brush lines looked like a mistake! But the final map is amazing, that will teach me to not judge stuff before it's finished!

This was a great video Bob. I loved the segue from drawing into the more philosophical tips for prep. What you said about zooming out on the drawing, as a metaphor for reducing our focus on campaign details is brilliant! Youre approaching Colville levels with your GM advice :)

This was very philosophical and made me want to get back into some terrain crafting for my encounters, haven’t done much dungeons and dragons during the pandemic but we are all finally getting to where we can get back together, I feel inspired. Thanks bob world builder.

Scale can be a very perspective-based measure. Did an exercise in the military doing land navigation using sketch maps from other people. One very enlightening exercise. I wouldn't worry too much about scale for a player map. A little uncertainty will keep it intereting. Have an NPC sketch a map in dirt or with ale on the table, then hand the players a sketch map. Another trick is to have an NPC describe directions thee ways: by visual landmarks, by road distances, and cultural/local "landmarks" or descriptions (or hard distance/directions, 3 km heading 45 degrees etc).

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS VIDEO! Please please please keep being you and doing things like this. I wish I was remotely good at art because I am a huge perfectionist when it comes to things I put any real amount of work into and that drags me away from wanting to hand draw maps. However your tips about thicker lines for shading and to add depth to the image was really easy to understand. I haven't made a map by hand in awhile, but I am looking forwards towards it now. In my professional life I convert engineering data into manufacturing data so a worker can build/assemble a thing. We have a concept called minimum required information, which is essentially what minimum level of detail is required for the worker to correctly follow the instructions. We also seek to find the upper information limit, where additional information is more like to add confusion than clarity. I apply this to my encounter maps where i'm not trying to communicate a drone shot of the area, but to communicate what areas have what properties (here be grass, stealth be easier. here be rocks, they be cover. here be walls ye can climb if ye dare [not sure where the parenthetical pirate came from] ). if there's time I will pretty it up, but at a minimum the things the characters can interact with are on the map.

To be honest, I consider DM Scottie to be the Bob Ross of D&D, but this is a good video with a funny approach. I liked it.

if you havent already, id recommend looking up a tutorial on using a tablet with the drawing program youre using. the tablet probably has pressure sensitivity and that can really make a drawing look great, not to mention speeding up the process. you should also be able to tweak the sensitivity in settings, to choose if you want a wide range of variation with pressure or less, and if it changes brush size, opacity, or both! some fancy tablets also have pen tilt settings for certain brushes

17:55 this is so true. We just had a wonderful game with the most non-serious characters and unrealistic goal, and it turned into the most fun we've had in a long time. Game was concieved at midnight the day before. We made characters and went to sleep. Afternoon after we played and had a grand time, laughing almost non stop. A firbolg wizard drug lord. Minotaur gladiator. Washed up centaur samurai. Quest: Help firbolg wizard smoke a volcano sized bong

I use Dungeondraft for my encounter maps and Wonderdraft for world maps. The asset packs are amazing and the ability to control lighting in encounter maps is very nice for shadows. However I do freehand some of my impromptu encounter maps, but I often do so as a quick and dirty map. The ideas you throw around here are very useful, Bob. Particularly the use of crosshatching for depth and shadows.

Loved this. I can get really in my head about drawing maps or really anything that isn't a monster or a person, but this was quite soothing!

Darker lines for foreground and/or shadows. Thinner lines--> effect of distance due to smoke/fog/air pollution.

I love the tips. I don't do much homebrew, mostly because I don't have the time to prep. This should cut down on prep time considerably, giving me the ability to cater my campaign more to my 5 kids. Still working through ROTFM Chapter 2!

Map wise I like to mix it up. Sometimes I use an old tv as map with detail sometimes just theater of the mind with drawn in the moment and sometimes I use 3d printed scenery. Unfortunately last year I couldn't play in person and needed online and the a detailed map works better to convey locations during battle or travel.

In your world, anything can be a map 👍

Really like this one, tbh I wasn't feeling your drawing early on but your eye is great and it turns into an interesting cartoony look later on. Would love to see more of these (although if you do them often enough it might make sense to put these on a second channel).

That is a neat map.

I use flip over / easel paper, gridded and some markers. WASD20 has a nice, short tutorial video on it. The reason I use it is it's nice and big so you can make large dungeon maps! I cut out secret doors/areas and drop them on the table over the original map if the players find it. It's awesome! They usually take about 60-90 minutes to make.

I enjoyed watching craft this map! Also I totally got the Bob Ross Vibe, even if the hair isn't quite right. However as a fellow Lazy DM I have to point out that you spent way too much time o n this one map for one encounter (and if its not your strong start that you may not even end up running anyway). You should have spent 45 seconds searching the internet and stolen, errr appropriated, a map. Which is what I am going to do know *heads to your Patreon*

If you are planning to do more digital content in the future, would it be too much to recommend investing in a greenscreen? It frees a lot of screen estate and lets the viewer focus on the subject even more

So i understand why you wanted to change up the bridge to be perpendicular to the road, because thats a professional bridge built out of planks in mind. I think you should have left it parallel with road/perpendicular to your ditch, because imagine felling a tree from one side so that it spans the ditch, then imagine splitting that log like a hotdog bun so you have two flat surfaces face up with the semicircle log underneath only touching the road at the lip of the ditch
