There are lots of advantages and disadvantages to drawing figures digitally. This video has a load of tips an insights to help you succeed with it. I'm using using Procreate on an iPad, though the ideas should apply to digital drawing generally.
Lane's brushpacks are extraordinary. The attention to detail and the care he's put into perfecting them is amazing. If you'd like to try them, use the link above. You can of course also draw figures well with other brushes. One simple option in Procreate is to use the 6B pencil brush that comes with Procreate, but take off the maximum size limitation they put on it.

I say the closest to drawing digitally on paper is mastering the ballpoint pen. Once you get that, drawing digitally becomes a breeze. Lane Brown's brushes are amazing also. What I love about digital is that you can experiment with color and value faster than using physical paints and markers.

interesting - the form of the stylus and ballpoint are similar, and how it glides across the surface. the lack of friction is the tricky part of the stylus and i think you're right that ball points also don't have a lot of that

What helped me a lot is that I bought a cintiq that has an imitation paper texture surface and I changed my stylus pen nib from the default slippery one to the one with more friction. These were nibs that came with the tablet. I believe you can buy a paper texture surface for any type though. I'm not sure. I think Amazon has them. @@lovelifedrawing

@@thacoolest13 The XP-Pen Deco V1 graphics tablet comes with a cover, and the Ugee stylus and Xp-Pen stylus work on each other's tablets, Ugee incorporated XP=Pen the latter stylus better than the Ugee stylus, it's a nice stylus . The major drawback with the Ugee U1200 & U1600 screen tablets are they require an HDMI port which many modern labtops don't have. You may guess I'm at th budget end of digital, even though my first tablet was a small Wacom. No drivers on Android or Chromebooks😀

You know this is a problem I don't hear a lot of artists talk about. Digitally drawing techniques are VERY different from pencil. When I learned with pencil you learn to use big gesture movements with your arm. That doesn't really apply to a digital pen.

Yeah i found it really interesting how my drawings changed. I tend to think the drawings are just what i care about, but they are also about what the material wants to create. that is also strongly the case with watercolour, where a big chunk of the work is being done by the water, almost like it's a collaborator

The 2D animators on YT tend to gravitate to the largest screen tablets, and I believe it's because it both facilitates the shoulder motion, lets them see their hand, and doesn't lead them to zoom in and get confused about what scale they are drawing at. There's a big divide in digital between whether or not seeing your hand is important, but there's a lot of agreement that zooming is a problem because of scale confusion. Your hand has less latency than the screen so it gives you slightly more ability to adjust a long stroke to be able to see it. On the other hand, the majority of the adjustment issue can be overcome by practicing blind contour more often and switching over to technical line tools when you want maximal precision for an ink line(n.b. I like MyPaint for this - it's a free app, uses a very cut down traditional-like workflow and has a nice set of curve and spline tools). But the scale issue is quite deadly because the thing we're doing in freehand is replaying a certain pattern of motion linguistically - we see a certain kind of line and we replay that motion like speaking a sentence. If we constantly change that scale, the work starts to converge on maximizing use of every pixel, which is a common trope of digital as a medium: adding way more detail than the composition calls for. Hence there is a thread of advice to stay zoomed out until the very end. Some of it can be stylistic - it's less important to digital painting to get really nice drafting because more of the work can be done in terms of massing and sculpting. And there's definitely interest in doing those kinds of very intensely rendered paintings. But I have also seen streams where people spend literal hours sculpting out linework that you could get with a dip pen in about 2 minutes. The result looks good but it's also kind of like, "only do this if you hate yourself". My conclusion is that there are many ways to get lost in digital's precision and turn into a programmer of your drawing instead of a performer. In general, I find that I do better at the sketch phase in traditional because it doesn't present these issues - the materials work in an exactly consistent, zero-latency, infinite-resolution way, so I'm free to just make the most of them on their own terms. I do struggle a little more with proportioning but the majority of it is handled by working on thin paper, flipping it over to polish up a mirrored version, then doing a graphite transfer if I want to finalize it. Digital has a lot of utility for enhancing traditional, and I really enjoy using it for hybrids.

Great video! Love the emphasis on the haptic differences, and on the exploration-friendliness of digital. I personally found I really love to chisel shapes (and even lines) in a way that I just couldn't do on paper. And then there is color! It's so easy to try out different color schemes in a breeze. Very excited about that upcoming workshop with Lane!

Thanks a lot for this. I've struggled to create an on-paper practice and these tips come at the right time for me. While I still have some negative self-talk about working digitally, I'm more and more recognizing that there is never just one path forward...and I still have a long way to go in just learning to "see". Being able to easily test things as I go without ruining a drawing makes me feel like I have more learning opportunities. Now if I can just trust the process.... 🙂

My advice would be to meld the use of the 2 together. Start physical until you’re done or mess up, then, take a photo of that physical medium or “paper” and work on top of it digitally. I say this coz my decades long art career was a lot about this technique, before doing what I do now, which is more musical, written work. My socials such as IG has hundreds of examples of digital/physical 🎨 hybrids such as this. Good luck, keep enjoying it. Your curiosity already shows us you’re on the right path✊🎨🦋 -m.🇦🇺

I've just started getting into digital on photoshop. It's such a strange change from the traditional paper feel to the slick screen. Once you've found a few brushes you like, it's so much nicer to be able to start a piece knowing you've already got the tools you want sorted and you can concentrate on all the fundamentals. I'm off to grab Lane's brushes, thanks as always Kenzo.

If I had to choose I would say I prefer traditional because the basic act and feeling of drawing on paper is so satisfying, drawing on a screen takes a while to wrap my head around. But digital art is so much more convenient and great for professional artists.

I began using this zoom out technique before i was really aware i was doing it! I repeatedly found myself working zoomed way out, canvas reduced to maybe 1/4 screen size, especially in the beginning compositional phase. Your suggestion that this working style could be an analogue for “drawing from the shoulder” to achieve big smooth powerful sweeping lines while drawing from the wrist with the stylus reveals the rational impulse that drove me to my tiny canvas…

Great information. I have started using Procreate for my amateur art work and like you have found that it is easier to do tonal drawings versus line drawings. I also have Lane Brown's brushes. One question I have about the pencils in Lane Brown's package is what defines a pencil as being a charcoal pencil when working digitally? Is it grain size or what? In addition, I am unsure how to use many of the available brushes in Lane Brown's package. It would be helpful if I could see Lane demonstrate how he uses each brush in his drawings. Like you I routinely use only of few of his brushes in my work (smooth pencil, general pencil, smudge edge softener, smudge gentle softener, eraser kneaded, vine charcoal stick). Any information you could provide me would be greatly appreciated.

I think a charcoal pencil on smooth newsprint and sharpened a certain way allows a variety of strengths and widths of mark, and creates a certain level of grain. With regard the various brushes, I personally would suggest it sounds like you are already using a good selection of the brushes

Is 'digitally' the hardest word in the English language to say?! Lane's Procreate and Photoshop brush packs are extraordinary. He has worked so hard to perfect them. You can get them here: gumroad.com/a/252736627 The pack I'm using in the video is the Procreate Charcoal Master Pack. If you'd like to try drawing on the iPad before you get the brush pack, try using the 6B pencil that comes with Procreate, but just take the maximum size limit off it.

Applying a screen protector takes practice but if you know how to do it (cleaning the device properly prior, ensuring the environment doesn’t have wind or movement, using the cardboard piece to slowly apply the screen protector to avoid the bubbles) then I’d say the matte screen protectors are fantastic for drawing.
