I've been trying for eons to get an effective draw shot. This vid finally did the trick for me. Allowing the elbow to drop (espoused as taboo by some "pool gurus") turned out to be the key for me. Great stuff! Thank you so much! I've also found the DVD set to be pure gold.

I remember being a 100-ball runner in Straight Pool and had a string of 10 break-and-runs in 9-Ball as a late teen, but really wasn't able to draw the cue ball, as in my neck of the woods, there was no one who could teach (nor indeed was willing to give away what players then still referred to as "secrets"), so I had to travel far and spend money on lessons. I guess what I'm trying to say is I didn't feel like a pool player before I was able to draw the cue ball. It's really cool that today, aspiring players have access to all kind of instruction, such as here. Keep up the great work!

LeonFleisherFan wait, you’ve run a ten-pack without using any draw??? How’s that possible? Lol Btw, my job is as a pro violinist, and our orchestra played with Leon Fleisher a few months ago. He played the ravel left hand concerto, and followed up with Clair de lune, using a very interesting contraption on his right hand. It was a gorgeous performance!
@LeonFleisherFan

Perhaps not "none", but I was so bad at draw shots, especially at a distance from the object ball, it was embarrassing. There have been better players, professionals even, who got away avoiding draw shots at all cost, a matter of adjusting one's pattern play. Once I got good at it, I must have changed my pattern play accordingly - the long-term result was or is that my power-follow shots aren't what they once used to be. But then, barely anything is… You're lucky and no doubt highly gifted to perform on that level, and in such illustrious company! (On a side note, I love Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand.) Let me share a story with you, something that happened to me some 30 years ago, after I'd taken lessons with Jerry Briesath and felt comfortable teaching others. One of my students, someone who took either lessons with me, or would play me on a daily basis in a pool hall where I was the house pro at the time, would put his violin case under the pool table every afternoon when he came in, and recapture it upon leaving. He was a nice chap, and one day after several weeks, he told me he was in Switzerland on a grant from the state of Bulgaria so he could major there and/or take master classes or the like, I forget, but most likely the former - at any rate, it dawned on me that he should really be practicing and not hang out in a pool hall, let alone rack the balls for me day in, day out. So at one point I challenged him to play what he was supposed to play for his teacher or master class, and he proceeded to play a movement from a Bach Partita or Sonata (again, I forget) - suffice to say he played not just with technical proficiency, but with a musicality way beyond his age (he must have been in his late teens, surely younger than me). It wasn't just beautiful, but positively intoxicating! I chased him out of the pool hall, or more to the point, told him to take responsibility for himself, go practice and not come back. I'll never forget that moment when he put his violin and bow back in its case - he looked grateful. I never saw him again, and since then have often wished I remembered his name, or knew what became of him. Life has its ways of being stranger than fiction sometimes. Cheers!

LeonFleisherFan lol what an awesome story!! Thankfully I discovered pool once I got an orchestra job. Now I spend all my free time practicing pool the way I practice violin. One or two shots out of 12, I’ll hit a shot with such perfect smoothness, that the ball spins the way the string vibrates. Truly the best game.

Watched a tutorial video you did on straight pool in Vegas, less than five min into it I said this guy has one of the best strokes I have ever seen. That says something because I played in the same room in Sacramento where there were some really great players that are now legends. Everything you are teaching in this video is exactly as it was shown to me. I have never seen anybody else on the internet teach this as well as you do here. One thing I would add is please play close attention to what his wrist is doing on the hand that holds the cue. On his big draw shots as he strokes through the ball, the wrist completely breaks to the point of hitting his forearm with the butt of the cue as he follows through. On his lesser draw shots his wrist still breaks nicely without the full follow through. Watch his wrist action and practice doing that stroke completely relaxed. In the end.... great stroke = great wrist action.

Thanks, Max for the very helpful video, you have pointed out a lot of things that other video I watched not pointing out. Btw, could the 'not so good' cue achieved what you have taught here? Cause I'm using an affordable cue and I'm kind of not so sure about my stroke technique.
@MaxEberle
@MaxEberle 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Hai Vu! Technique is very important with a not so good cue. Have in nicely shaped tip is very important and if it's softer that is usually better for the draw shot. Many cheap cues come with rock hard tips which make everything more difficult... get a soft or medium tip and shape it like a nickel or dime and keep it chalked up properly and scuffed from time to time with a tip pik or something like it.

Hey, Max, well done and coming from me, that means alot because if you look up player hater pool instruction, it's a pic of yours truly. It's clear, concise and detailed. I haven't watched all of it yet, so not sure if you covered anything about bridge hand position, relative to distance to the grip hand. Also how snug the loop finger is. And, what should you feel from the shaft on the bridge hand. Downward pressure as if the shaft is heavy? Or maybe super light? I tend to know I got the green light for launch point, when I can start to feel the top of the shaft on my loop finger. Good job dude, ummm can we play for some money?

This was an useful video and your knowledge is obvious. However, consider ramping up the pacing of your delivery. Your speaking style is a bit halting and I often found myself anxiously waiting for you to demonstrate the thing you had been talking about for so long. I feel I am capable of absorbing information much more quickly.
