For me, inconsistency is a very good thing. It means you are slowly getting better at drawing the characters. Of course they should look mostly the same in the same comic.
@DonCorgi
@DonCorgi 3 жыл бұрын
I think inconsistency is natural when you start drawing the characters, and with practice you'll get more consistent results just getting used to the character and how you want to portray them.

an exercise I learned when I was learning animation is Iterative drawling. If you want to draw the same character consistently then set up a page with 4 rows of 5. In each box draw your character in the same pose one stroke of a time for the entire row. So you draw the action line 5 times one in each box same angle same size, the circle for the head 5 times one in each box, same angle same size. etc etc. On the second row you do a different pose. on the third row you do the first pose again, etc etc until you fill up the whole page. Then put that page aside and do another one after a long break. same poses same process. THIS BURNS the character into your brain and lets you call up their details easily as well as think of the drawing process of the character as you go. Usually the last one on the page is the most accurate.

@@jaredcortez6709 I know this a 2 yr old comment but your only half correct onion skin helps keep head shapes and feature placement easier cause you can view it in motion giving your brain a illusory 3d image of your drawing. With both you can be a phenomenal artist. With only onion skin you can gain muscle memory of 3d spaces building up your consistency with novice level training. Later you should drop the onion skin to practice on your own without handicap.

It happens! Our brain forgets how to draw things when we don't draw them for some time. That's why I recommend a drawing routine so you keep that muscle memory up! And don't worry, just keep trying and it will get better with every drawing. Have fun with the whole process!
@scribblecloud

i think i struggle the most with head to body proportions, i always feel like the head is too small so i size it up but then when i do i feel like the body is too small so i size it up and then i just go back and forth and never quite figure it out and even if i overlay the exact reference it still ends up looking off somehow and then even if i get somewhere im happy when i look at it the next day it usually suddenly looks wayy off again
@DonCorgi
@DonCorgi 10 ай бұрын
It's not easy! So don't beat yourself up on it. When I want to have the proportions right I just start with a quick Head sketch and then do more heads in a straight line until I have 7 or 7 and a half for the whole body. (this of course depends on your art style and what proportions you like!) Good luck scribblecloud, keep going!

although i've been drawing my comfort character for a while now, i only recently decided on how i want him to look like. it calms me down a bit that the in the original source he looks a little different on each piece too. if you really think about it, you yourself look different on each day too! it's only natural to stay inconsistent as we are living creatures that change all the time. thank you for the video!

Wow, this was actually really helpful! Do you think it would be alright to trace over your old drawings of characters to help keep them consistent, especially when it come to difficult angles? Or would that hinder any sort of progress?
@DonCorgi
@DonCorgi 2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad it was helpful Brynn! I think if you're doing it because you thought the old drawing was looking quite good and you want to practice and find out how you did it, it's a good choice! But if you want to keep exploring and progressing your art style (while staying consistent) I would instead make new drawings with the base reference from previous drawings. Hope that makes sense, enjoy the videos!
