Store bought hammers are popular because they can be picked up on the cheap. They are fine to use but the face on these hammers are typically not good for forging right away. The hard chamfer on the hammers leave marks in your work. This is how I correct that
I am just learning, if you see something i could have done better please let me know in the comments below so myself and other people learning can gain from your knowledge.

Thanks for taking the time to show this. Most videos I've seen just show them using the angle grinder and just doing it and saying there ya go it's done. Taking the time to show the edges and what you did specifically to those areas. Also different ways of doing it like with the file. May take a bit longer but way more control.

I do it by hand because there's not much material to work with on my hammers (autobody). After the 800 I wetsand with 1000, 2000, and 3000 before polishing. We also have to be aware of marking our work. The better you can get the metalwork, the less body filler you need.

The big benefit to doing the job by hand, makes you appreciate and care for it more. You would be more conscious of what you do with it, and try to keep it in better condition. Great demonstration!

I just got both the 1.5 and the 2lb. They were at a school I took a class at. Just bought a belt grinder just for these. My Peddinghaus hammers were dressed manually, but I wanted to grind them. I think I went a bit aggro on the 1.5.

Two pieces of advice: 1.Find someone to apprentice under. It will save you LOADS of time, mistakes, and money. Learn from their trials and mistakes, and learn about the mindset. 2.When tapering a tip, hold it closer to (read: damn near ON) the far edge of the working face to avoid hitting the corner of your hammer. Chipping a shiny hammer is never fun. Excellent video though. +1 sub

Hi Chris, can you give some pointers on "dressing" an anvil, got an old one that needs a little TLC before I can use it.
@Friidom2
@Friidom2 6 жыл бұрын
Sure! I had to dress my anvil as the "sweet spot" still had almost factory edges. I used very similar methods, angle grinder with a flap wheel and some sand paper. I made sure to have a good round corner in one spot, a sharp spot in another and a much bigger radius on the heel (the heel came with that big radius) My goal in this was to have three different edge radius that I could go to depending on what I wanted to do. I like how I have it laid out.

Hey! thanks for the good video - at $40 it's hard to not have that hammer in your bin. I was wondering once that hammer was dressed, and how well do the faces keep their finish? Do the polished-dressed surface show little deformation or do you find that work pieces impart marks in the Nordic hammer.? Thanks in advance for any information back. Great video

Thank you Brian Wisotzkey! The faces hold up great and I have used it a fair bit now and no, there are no marks on the hammer face from use.

The anvil face needs to match the shiney of the hammer face to get the full effect. 😉 I put the fine finish on my smaller hammer since I do finer work with it.

How do you file a hardened hammer face? I actually don't know, I'm not trying to insinuate anyone else is stupid.
@Friidom2
@Friidom2 5 жыл бұрын
No worries. You simply need a file that is harder than the hammer. Hammers are hardened, absolutely. But it is perfectly possible to file a hammer with a HRC of 35 using a file that is HRC 55 or higher. The harder the hammer the slower the filing, but its doable.

I just bought a beautiful antique French style cobbler’s hammer that needed polishing on the face. I used my sander and all was well until my pesky little finger decided to be fancy and stick up(I’m a woman, so it’s ok) I fucked that finger up with the sander and taught it a lesson it will never forget. Be careful with your power tools people

You worked the whole face there when all you needed to work was the edges. The file method just on the edges would have been faster than what you did with the angle grinder and sandpaper. You also used the angle grinder with the flap disk as if you were doing stock removal, allot of pressure and sweeping cuts. be more gentle and slower movements around the edges and only the edges you want to break will improve what you did. You do not need to push down on an angle grinder for every project, in some cases being gentle and cautious is more productive. In other words you don't need to manhandle it, an angle grinder can be used for far more precise grinding if you regulate the pressure. Want allot removed add pressure, want just a little and very controlled... little pressure and control it. The tool isn't a sledge hammer. I am remembering my old boss yelling at me for "grinding" away stainless with a 120 grit flap wheel rather than cleaning it.. He was right. Use the amount of pressure that's needed for the job.

The face had radiating lines on it. Needed to take those out as they left small indentations. Nothing like the hard edge, but they were there and they bugged me. It also gave me an opportunity to shape the face to my liking and that I did. It works very well now, even if the shiny doesnt last long. lol
