You are spot on. We visit family in France every year and that is exactly what I see. You rarely see French women wearing large luxury logos. I was told that those are used mostly by tourists. The French use mainly quality pieces with discreet branding. And their most important accessory is self confidence😊 Thank you for sharing!

I've never liked wearing/carrying anything that as you well said 'advertises for the designer'. My #1 biggest pet peeve on that is designers who sew small metal 'labels' to the outside of women's shirts. Michael Kors is terrible about this. I cut them off every time. Never mind clothing with enormous brand names slapped across them. Looks so junky and low-class.

A few years ago I visited Paris during the Beginning of June. While walking to the supermarket I was stopped by a handsome gentleman who showered me with complements simply because I was wearing a (not loud but very tasteful) salmon colored pink blazer. Apparently, I stood out from the crowd of ladies. I guess that a little color is appreciated even in Paris.

I don't mind looking like a tourist when i travel. After all, I am a tourist. Why do so many people obsess about trying to look French when they are not? Wear what you want when you travel being mindful to not be offensive (like wearing short dresses in Saudi Arabia). Smile at people.... ask questions about things......above all be polite. I have traveled the world, just been myself, and have had a wonderful time.

I agree completely about this, and I think the look is quite boring. Put some effort into your look, be polite, speak a little of the language, and you will be fine. And I lived in Paris, speak French, and really love to visit. But I'd rather be my American self and be a good ambassador. We are not all loud, bossy, and boorish. And I have my own sense of style.

Observation: as an European myself this has more to do with economics than style. The pieces you described don’t really ever go out of style. People buy pieces they know they can wear forever. Throughout the years, I told my daughter the rules of French style....for instance a French woman would never wear sneakers. She is now 26 but four years ago we met up in Paris and guess what sneakers everywhere.. So she will never again believe me. She now lives in London and I sent her this video. Happy ending. I live in Toronto and we have both travelled extensively. We both agree that it is our favourite city. I love the art, wine, fashion and food. It is a very walkable city.

The first time I went to Paris in 2013 I made the mistake of taking some color. Big mistake! I was stared at on the metro to the point I felt uncomfortable. I quickly switched to the black, gray and white pieces I had brought for the rest of the trip. Last November when I went there was a tad more color but I felt more comfortable in my black, white and gray color scheme. I did take black ankle booties and black Superga trainers. If I were going in Spring/Summer I would take white. Flats or booties were appropriate with dresses. I also took black tights to wear with dresses. I had heard that no one wore puffer jackets or coats, but I found that there were lots of them but they were tailored and minimal, warm but not oversized. Deep, dark navy is also an option. Makeup is minimal except for the occasional red lip. Hair tends to be longer and look effortless, pulled back or loosely tied up in a very loose bun at the nape of the neck. The French believe in skin care, not makeup. Hope my observations help someone headed that way. It is one of my favorite cities! And be prepared to walk. I’m convinced this is how both women and men eat what they want and stay thin.

What I noticed is that French women are mostly with dark hair, so that's why black color suits them. But for blond women black might look too harsh. That's why you wear cream pastel colors and they look so chick on you, because there is no harsh contrast. I used to wear lots of black when my hair was dark, but since I colored my hair blond, black looks really harsh and aging on me. But light colors make me look effortless. I love this video, you nailed it ❤

Very true. Being a French living in the US I agree 100%. Sneakers have indeed become popular over the last couple of years in France... but they are slightly different from I see here, though. And yes fabric quality and simplicity is what matters the most. And most rich people would not want you to know the brand they wear... luxury brands logos are much more apparent in the US

I'm going to France for 3 months next fall (yes I know I'm lucky!) and NOTHING is gonna stop me from bringing my mustard jeans. Everyone in France is dressed in black, white, beige and grey... time to spice things up a bit. Last time I went for such an extended period of time (summer 2017, 3 months as well) I had in my luggages a mustard t-shirt, red shorts, royal blue jacket and what else that was colorful, and I got nothing but compliments from the french ladies who told me how refreshing it was to finally see some colors. The trick is to keep it to one plain (no pattern) colorful piece of clothing, pair it with the classic french style and stay away from any logos or brands and you're good to go. I mean.... do you REALLY want to blend in? I surely don't.

I really don’t understand why so many KZfaq videos keep directing us towards dressing like French women! I don’t understand why we should wear ‘uniforms’ - we are all unique, and should dress to express ourselves. I don’t suit black, and I don’t suit white. I don’t want to go to France and look like what I’m not. I love wearing colours; I love wearing clothes, jewellery, bags etc that I enjoy wearing, which become an extension and an expression of myself.

I agree. I am Indian. My country has a rich history of textiles atleast 40 unique styles of clothing. My effort is to incorporate traditional Indian pieces with my western wardrobe. Having said that, only in America I see extreme level of ‘made up’ looks. Maybe Middle East to some extent. But rest of the world are not wearing layers and layers of makeup, not wearing concealer highlighter contour bronzer 10 different eyeshadows etc. that is because the US market drives us to do that. An American probably spends three times more on clothing and makeup than an average person from another part of the world. But it is more quantity driven. I have also heard French people are not very friendly unlike Americans .... who are very welcoming of outsiders. Black and white is a very specific mood. I love the Sun; the trees , the rivers and all the color that one sees in them. My clothes reflect the vibrancy of nature.

I just returned from my second trip to Paris in the last two years and your observations are spot on. Plain white or black sneakers everywhere, straight dark jeans, lots of black trench coats and moto jackets and a lot of simple blouses and plain white or black t shirts. I had so much anxiety packing - not for jeans or tops but in the FEET department. I have such problems with my feet. I'm 49 years old (I turned 49 in Paris this year and 47 in Paris two years ago). I walk a lot and was very worried about my feet. I brought carry on only and packed four pairs of shoes: a black wedge espadrille sandal, a pair of white street sneakers, a pair of simple black ankle boots with a low heal and a pair of walking sandals that were not stylish at all but I brought as a safety measure. I was in Paris a week. We walked 60 miles. I wore my white sneakers three times and found that I needed more support. I ended up wearing my black ankle boots most days because they had a wide toe bed and more heel support. I wore the wedges once and the sandals twice when my feet were just dying after wearing the white sneakers. If I had it to do over again, I'd bring more of a single color running shoe and wear them every single day. That is what the Parisian women were wearing and they got it right! I love your posts. So helpful!

Since I was taking the whole family along, I chose to dress comfortably and inexpensively, as we were busy all day, walking miles and miles. Even though I took a lot of basic Gap and Old Navy pieces, I also took along a Moto Jacket, a Trench and several scarves. I felt like my less expensive outfits worked. When I travel to a foreign country, I don’t try and fit in....I love colors & textures in pieces so I bring what I’d normally wear 😃. It’s up to them to admire or learn from the pretty outfits I enjoy wearing 👌😉. Xoxo 😘 Deborah

Hi Erin, thanks for your wonderful video! I just came back from a trip to Ireland. In Dunblin women really dress up. I saw a lot of dresses, beautiful skirts, all knee length. Also, a lot of high heels (streets don't have cobblestones) Even young girls were very dressy. I went to a couple of high end restaurants and to coffee shops, everywhere I saw these beautiful women dressed like models. No so much jewelry and no showing skin, not a lot of sneakers. Blazers and motor jackets were everywhere as well. Those women looked fantastic!

You’ve nailed it. I believe I mention, on another video, that Stan Smith Adidas were the rage @ 4 yrs ago. The accent on the shoes were classic green to gold to pink. Reeboks with white gym socks, light wash jean shorts, message T-shirt, a baseball cap and a Jansport backpack still scream “American tourist.” As you mentioned, the rest of the outfit is simple, chic & dark. We stayed in a flat for 2 weeks and the calcium deposits in the water were extreme. I spent my time wearing a messy bun. I was asked for directions on three separate occasions! Some young man at the Jardin du Luxembourg, ( my afternoon hang out 2 blocks away,) struck up a convo that my 10 words of grade school French wouldn’t let me understand. I’m convinced it was the hair! (...with a little help from the Aquiline nose.) Bravo 🇫🇷🎯👏🏻

This is good advice for any girl or women. There are other ways for expressing your unique individual self and the natural beauty you were born with. When you dress yourself in a simple, elegant, edgy...whichever style you like, try to let your own light shine through. It's important to know your not raping mother earth in order to feel good about yourself. STOP FAST FASHION.

I’ve been to London 31 times in the past 20 years, 32 coming up. I’ve never worn sneakers until this last trip. I couldn’t believe that all my English friends were wearing white leather sneakers…..like the Ecco’s. So I bought some over there, even though I had some at home, and my feet were so happy. I still had some ankle boots and ballet flats for going out at night. This next time I a. So,it ting my time between London and Paris and I bought some white AGLs with laser cut sides. So darn cute. They even look good with skirts. You give great advice

Fashion watching is a fave pastime while traveling. Thank you for sharing observations from your latest recon mission. You are very observant. It’s been awhile since i traveled in Europe, but I recall being surprised at how fashionably the people in Milan dressed, both men and women. Even compared to the people of Paris, the Milanese dressed with such flair and confidence, my eyes got tired watching the weekday morning rush walk by. The quality of the fabrics was remarkable; it justified the high price of clothing.

In the current "minimalism" trend, I think this is a key look that is less less uniform but more functional/affordable. I love color, but buying quality basics is really more practical and savvy. I am interested to see how this would work in a work wardrobe. I love the style, and it is classic enough to cross over easily, but I have had jobs that don't allow jeans. How could you incorporate the layers without them? Great video with a simple and easy breakdown! 💗

You’re a very good observer. ‘les baskets’ (sneakers) and ‘les boots’ (booties) are very trendy over there at the moment, and ‘les ballerines’ (flats) are out. If you’re interested in French fashion and style would recommend checking out Cristina Cordula, she’s a fashion model from the 80’s who hosts several fun TV shows all about fashion trends in France. I learn so much from her about the French fashion trends. My favorite is ‘Les Reines du Shopping’.

Yes they are wearing sneakers - but not ugly ones with logos! A classic sneaker (more like a tennis shoe) seemed to be the norm, although I suspect a lot of the people you showed were tourists! Glad to see no distressed jeans, no ruffles, no embellishments, no obvious logos, simple hair and makeup. Another channel that I watch is Audrey a la mode - she has Parisian style - simple, elegant.

Check out Jeremy Fragrance on KZfaq. He is adorable and gives really great descriptions, as well as seasonal recommendations, that might help you find your signature scent. My personal favorite for a few years now is Flower Bomb by Victor & Rolf. I have always gravitated towards more sandalwood and spicy, but that can be a bit overpowering, so it is so refreshing without somehow being overly feminine either. I will never tire of it! Good luck!!

Just an observation about those saying there are too many rules of dress: “Uniform” is not a negative word. It describes most of us. I was out at the park and every single woman/mom was wearing skinny jeans or leggings, flat booties and a light throw. A pack of teens walked by all wearing variations of the same outfit on repeat. Same, same, same. Unconsciously that is a uniform.

Hi Erin, LOVE this post. I was recently in London, in spring time, and came across many French tourists. They were all dressed exquisitely but not as understated as you describe here. Eg cream trousers with racing stripe, cream lacy blouse, and sneakers that had a minor pop reflected in the colour of the racing stripe. For dinner they would wear black jeans or well tailored black skirt with black lace blouses, one was a micro pleat.

Marie-Anne LeCoeur is a French stylist KZfaqr and I think she epitomizes French Chic....bottom line is we, here in the USA are about buy, buy, buy and not so much about fewer items but higher quality and more cohesive and elegant....Europe does not do as much consuming as we do and in essence do more with less....they do put stock in quality, great skin care regimens, good quality items that work on repeat more than we do....and I agree with your observations...so much less fru-fru, cheap quality fast fashion or trends seen in Paris/France......Big Hugs
