Actually the reason is people in the UK tend to say Van Goff or the other way Van Gogh (like Go) But the way it was really pronounced was Van Gock...really. And it's funny you ask because don't we say Laugh, and enough (we don't say lau and enou) I could see why they may say that. Anbsinthe pronounced like Ansanthe... why do we say Chopan for the composer Chopin... same thing. He is trying to sound a bit silly and sarcastic on purpose. Why are you so bitter and critical when this is for info.

There's a word for the process of absinthe turning from clear to cloudy, releasing the green fairy... louche. The same word that is used to describe someone who is debauched, unreliable, ill-kempt, indecent, disreputable yet probably entertaining. Be louche!
