I must admit, I haven't had the 18yo Yamazaki or the Hakushu 18yo. I enjoy the 12yo, especially seeing that it is still in my price range. The only thing I have issue with here is I just can't imagine using any aged whisky, especially an 18yo in a long drink. Yamazaki and Hakushu have whiskies that are with NAS (no age statements) and are perfect for long drinks. In the end of course, drink a whisky the way you want. However, I hope more people would first try the whiskies in particular those with age statements such as 18yo, neat and maybe with a touch of water in a nosing glass. These drinks do, at least, look like a lot of fun to make.

Andrew Jarrett Yep. it's a real shame seeing people drink a 12+ aged whiskey any other way than neat. That's the whole point of lashing out and spending the extra dosh, so it's a much nicer experience and not requiring anything to cut the sharpness or flavor.
@Andrew-lb1up

ben schram This issue of drinking these aged stated whiskies neat or with a dash of water is more important now that they are becoming rarer. Why take a hard to find whisky and drown it out with a lot of fluff? Oh well, I guess some people will go for those types of drinks. I was in Narita airport this weekend and even in the Duty Free it wasn't easy to find some of the Japanese whiskies. They had the 18yo Yamazaki selling at 50,000 Yen, which is about 415 USD. I was to get a bottle of the Nikka Pure Malt 17yo for only 3,500 Yen, which is 29 USD. Go figure. There is no way in H-E double hockey sticks that I will try to replicate the drink we saw being made here.

I'm pretty sure they are doing it because the bartender is just trying to raise sales, and move product. If all of you are disappointed that they are ruining this fine product and think it was unintentional, well that bartender just up-sold a shot(1.5oz) that's 150$ (at least where I work)...... Unless they comped it, thennnnnnn NVM.

I paused as soon as they revealed it was Yamazaki 18 they were going to pour over ice, scrolled down to see comments, happy to see my other whisky lovers were thinking exactly the same thing, added this comment and moved on to another video.

Well this is a load of bollocks ... Not once did they think to suggest drinking it straight in a glencairn glass, which is the best way to appreciate it! Filling the glass with ice (ice ball) is quite a Japanese thing to do though but you're still barely getting any smell or taste that way -_- ALSO who the fuck edited this video? They used nikka pure malt red label not black! It's really not that difficult to tell them apart :P Personally I do really enjoy Japanese whisky as it can be so different from scotch, however i normally avoid suntory apart from the hibiki as their whisky never really seems worth it or different enough. However I love NIKKA!! Their coffey grain whisky is amazing!! Also its well priced and very different, also yoichi is delicious!

+sicarius68 Yeah it really is nowadays, its a shame as it wasn't too expensive a while ago but thanks to people like Jim Murray suggesting its the best in the world, everyone wants it. Its really annoying as its great to try new styles of whisky but thanks to its sudden increase of popularity its now very overpriced and hard to get :/

all of these guys slamming the fact they put ice in it. You can put ice in whisky, but i needs to be big chunks like what these guys use, yes i dilutes it, but not as fast or as bad as simple little ice cubes.

Good job FHM, you successfully made the brains of everyone with an iota of whisky knowledge explode. The moment you enter ice into the equation, the flavor and smell of the whisky is shot down almost completely. And adding anything to an 18 year (besides a minor splash of water) is a borderline sin. You should apologize to your parents for dishonoring them and the many generations that preceded you.

Yamazaki 18 isn't £90-£100 anymore. A boom in popularity (possibly led by Pewdiepies Japanese whisky review of which at the time, he had 54 million subscribers) has caused an staggering inflation. Yamazaki 18 is now from £550-£800.

Japanese pretty much never drink it neat, I prefer my whiskey straight as well but they never even heard of adding a few drops of water to open it up. Almost all bar tenders assume you want ice with it in japan and highballs are extremely popular. They drink those and beer primarily, I also saw a fucking stupid comment mentioning how Japan isn’t new to creating whiskey. 1920s for whiskey is not old, that’s very new for a county getting into the whiskey game. Whiskey snobs who actually no nothing are real cringe. Reference I’m literally living in japan and have traveled everywhere except Hokkaido.
@Disinf3ctant

Shoutout to all the uncultured snobs in the comments. Whiskey on the rocks and highball are the most common ways people enjoy whiskey in Japan. It's almost always drunk as a beverage rather than out of a nosing glass to assess the notes - this is a very western practice. Nosing and tasting neat are the repertoire of distillers and blenders in Japan. I mean, there is no wrong way to drink whiskey but to denounce a whole nations way of drinking something they produce is fucking hubris if I've ever seen it

For all you Japanese whiskey "experts" crying about drinking Japanese whiskey any other way than neat... the highball cocktail is the most common way to drink whiskey in Japan. Yes, even 12 and 18 year single malts. Just because American elitists drink their whiskey neat doesn't mean its the only way to drink whiskey. The flavor profiles in Japanese whiskey are suited for consuming during meal time and drinking a glass of whiskey, neat, while eating a steak doesn't groove very well. Try adding some soda to your next glass of and enjoy that steak instead of having a boring glass of wine.
