to my fellow learners these are what i learned when i was struggling with my first manual rexy. a year in and i’m fully confident with hills, rev matches and heel toe. before anything try reversing without gas. you’ll get a much better sense of the biting point. and then play around with the gas, keep the rpms below 2.5 to avoid burning your clutch too much. rule of thumb is to not slip for more than 5 seconds. next when people tell you to slwoly release the clutch, it doesn’t mean linearly throughout the clutch play. you can release till the bite point really quickly or slowly it doesn’t matter. what matters is you BRIEFLY pause at the bite point while easing into gas just a little and then letting go of the clutch fully when you feel the car engage. not sure how to explain how the car engagement feels like you’ll just know it over time. but remember it isn’t about releasing slowly, it’s more of releasing a briefly pausing at the bite point before letting go. the harder you’re accelerating the harder you can dump the clutch. when you’re on hills after you’re confident with the biting point, do the same just hold the biting point maybe a second longer with more gas, depending on the slope. but 3ks should be MORE than sufficient. also when releasing your handbrake do it quickly, don’t hesitate be confident it helps a lot. just remember the brief pause at the bite point. rev match downshift is more of muscle memory, everyone has different methods. but generally what i do is clutch gas shift release to the biting point , briefly pause and let go. just do it with the car off you’ll get it sooner or later. there’s no need to bang the clutch and shift with force, gentle shifts will always lead to a smoother ride. also your car ratio is generally all different, but going from 3-2 is probably the biggest jump. so when downshifting you’ll probably need to blip more gas (1.5k of gas instead of 1k) and lastly when in doubt clutch the fuck in. i know how stressful it is, i’ve stalled on the hill in the middle of the city literally 10 times i a row, it was fucking embarrassing. but like anything practice and you’ll get there. don’t be afraid to fuck up your clutch, it’s meant to be used. just don’t hold it at high rpm’s for longer than 3 seconds you should be fine. hope this helps, don’t give up and be a pussy. manual driving is a lost art

A great video brother. My mom taught me how to drive a stick on a VW bug in high-school. I love my 2020 STI and I also owned a 2017 wr. That bite point on the STI is very touchy. Every cars clutch is different. A great platform we have. My daily driver to and from work. 😊 Subies forever ♥️.

I have been learning manual and I’m getting better, but I currently do not rev match when down shifting. I basically downshift, hold the clutch at the bite point to allow the clutch to do the “rev match” which raises the rpms. It is considered normal wear and tear on the clutch but I do want to learn how to rev match manually because it will allow the clutch to last longer. I’m just worried about practicing because the times that I have tried, I didn’t give the car enough gas and the car jerked.

You won't burn out your clutch I have a 2020 VW GLI manual now and I learned on it only difference is the WRX clutch is a slight bit heavier, but before you know it, it becomes muscle memory I'm 4 years in and with manual's disappearing I don't know what to do for my next car because I enjoy it more than an auto good luck. It took me a day to get going but I've seen it done all my life and I learned the concept from playing video games nearly my whole life. Lastly as he said in the video it's first gear that you have to learn everything else is easy and once you master first, reverse is the same except you normally will not release the clutch completely.

When I go from 3rd to 2nd, what rpms should I blip the throttle to?
@Pottershwa
@Pottershwa 3 ай бұрын
When your in second pay attention to your rpm at different speeds. Youll have an idea of what rpm you need to hit when downshifting into that gear. so say your going 45 in 3rd and your rpms are at like 2000 you'll probably need 2500 to 3000 if you're going to downshift to 2nd. I'm horrible at explaining but go 45 or 50 in second, take not of where your rpms are at and when downshifting to that gear you'll have a better idea of what rpm you need to hit at that speed for that gear.

Why do people keep reaching rev matching for a level 1 video. You also forgot to show how to get the car rolling with the clutch only. Most people barely have the coordination to let of the throttle before clutching in the upshift, telling them to rev match is like gatekeeping before they can understand the fundamentals.

Those are very fair points, I appreciate the constructive criticism. I should’ve thought of the clutch only part.

@@TheeAdamG I’m by no means an expert since I enjoy seeing what people are putting out since there is always something to learn or offer advice on. I’ve taught about 100 people with an average lesson of 3 hours. The most common issue is people lack the coordination in the beginning for taking off and then usually redlining first and short shifting the rest of the gears. To get into the nuances would probably be a 5 parts video series 30 minutes each lol

The trick is to wait till there isn’t any inertia left then let go of the clutch till the bite point and ease gas in. the more inertia from 1st gear you have the longer u gotta slip into second and gas more. if you wait till the rpms dip till 3ish you can slip the clutch a little and it’ll be smooth.
