I'm currently an apprentice at a truck repair shop, and one of the shop's own trucks we move trailers with is a 6 speed manual FH12. Now I finally know how this works, thank you

Good video to prepare to drive this gearbox I watched it before I went and then I realised it's a lot more simpler even then it looks usually once you're in the 4th gear you can keep that to do roundabouts and normal turns and you only click the splitter down when you think you're going to come to a complete stop so then you can usually starting second gear when you're empty or third

Props to you for changing at low rpms! The Volvos like to shift low, but many ppl rev them way too high when they change gears! I've driven a FH 480 and it was a really nice truck to drive :)

I understand the dual range principle as I was taught in a rigid with 8 gears, four over four. I struggle to understand quite how the half gear splitter is put to practical use though. I can only imagine it is if a truck was so heavily loaded that you need to use half a gear each time you shift because a full gear would cause it to lug. So it would be a case of flicking the switch and declutching, but not moving the shifter to go up half a gear. Strikes me as being a bit like overdrive on 3rd and top on an MG or Triumph sports car, except it is on all gears and halves a gear instead of overdriving it. I watched another uploaders video while he drove on the road and between block gear changes and the hi and low range switch being used as well as the splitter, I couldn't follow it even though he kept saying 'simple'! Then KZfaq showed me an American tutorial for using a 10 speed manual, and it seems to me all those Kenworths and Macks just have dual range with no splitter but incredibly they aren't fitted with synchromesh, and you have to double clutch on each upshift and do the same plus match engine speed with a throttle blip on the downshift! All those automatic cars yet they don't put synchromesh on trucks!

Also you can click the high although get to the opposite that you're in because when you either go down a gear or upper gear and you're in low gear obviously high gear in the gear below or your current gear high gear is next sounds confusing but simple

I don't think I understood the point in the video by watching it once but when you go from low to high gear of each gear you just press the clutch once to take you to the next half gear of each gear, either low or high
@moronicvideos5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately most explanations confuse things by talking about high and low gear but don't mention that there are two kinds of high and low. This is a combined range and split gearbox. Forget the split function for a while. You have 1 2 3 then you flip the range button and then you get high 1 high 2 and high 3 which some call 4 5 6. This is the "base" gears for lack of better terms. Now each "base" gear has a low or high half gear which is manouvered by the split button. So you have 1 low-split 1 high-split 2 low-split 2 high split 3 low-split 3 high-split Now you flip the range button and you get 4 low-split 4 high-split 5 low-split 5 high-split 6 low split 6 high-split.

Why would you keep it in the low split for the whole run instead of using the full gear once up to speed?
@spana1233212 жыл бұрын
You use the gearbox as you would in a car however it’s all automatic now with trucks in the U.K. new trucks anyway unless you run a six legged tipper, if your on uneven ground manual gearbox is best

Driving trucks is not all about the fancy trucks you get to drive. Worldwide drivers are paid shit. Someone like me knows so much however I lost my licence 8 years ago for DD, not proud of that but I now drive a reach truck for DHL and wouldn’t go back on the road, it’s to much hassle, however I did rope and sheet, use straps, know what a fifth wheel is, have used fridges or reefers in U.S. I’ve delivered plant, dumpers, diggers, JCBs, cabins, skid steer loaders, telehandlers, fuel. I have delivered so many different things and have the skills but all the world wants now is internet stars. I have rusty skills which will be lost to time.

What's the C stand for on the shift pattern?
@msangwan75 жыл бұрын
C stands for crawling gear. It is basically kind of half gear, has half speed of 1st gear. It is sometimes used for vehicles that need to pull large loads, climb steep inclines, or drive over obstacles on the road or terrain, such as rocks, which is sometimes referred to as crawling over the rocks.
