How to Dye Leather with BUBBLES
Years back we did a video about dying leather with bubbles, but never explained the process. Today we talk you through making your own bubble dyed leather, from the dyes we use to the soap and techniques to get multiple different looks from this super fun technique! Make sure to experiment with bubble dyeing leather, as you can get lots and lots of different leather looks with this process as you perfect your personal style of doing it.

This shows you never have an original thought; I was literally thinking of when I was a kid and you would put ink in a tub of water and blow bubbles into it, place paper on it and make crazy patterns - how cool this would be for leather for funky designs. I love this technique and will definitely use this on some un-dyed veg !

That's a cool idea. If you had a cookie pan full of bubbles and touched the leather to it I think the bubble pattern would be more pronounced and have a different feel too without the splashes and drips added in.

I surely thought that you were going to share rule #1 NEVER INHALE WHILE BLOWING BUBBLES! Thanks for sharing. Going to mix it up with the southwestern look. Never can tell, it may be a hit with accessories!

This looks great! Something completely new to me. I haven’t had much success myself with Tokonole as a finish on the front of leather. I tried it on my own previous wallet with just natural veg tan leather and it never looked right to me even after a lot of use.

Attempt one ended with me attempting to pour the bubbles out and dumped the solution all over my leather. At least it has a very unique design now😂

Have you tried using a glass burnisher for applying Tokenal?

Here's the big question, is the old tshirt the one you wore the day before? Wearing a white shirt while dying anything would be a disaster for me, let alone bubble dying. I've gotta try this method though!

The Black pro Dye is difficult to get hold of at the moment. No one seems to have much if any in stock. Any ideas why?

I would love to try this! The dye and water seems to stiffen the leather quite a bit. Would it be a good idea to condition the leather before adding a top coat? Would you add anything to the backside (if you used Tokonole on the front, it would probably not be a good idea to use it on the back as well). Also: Is there anything else besides Tokonole for the finish? Resolene? Tan Kote? Thanks for the videos!

You'll probably find the excess dye is what stiffens the piece so when it's buffed it will soften. Regarding the back side, depending on the tannery it may already be finished so don't always need to apply a finish. With conditioners leather is so porous you'll be able to apply it afterwards if you want 🙏

Cash savvy minded question : can we use leather conditioner made of beeswax and neatsfoot oil instead of tokonole(120US$/bottle)?

Thanks for your videos! I'm nowhere near ready to experiment with different dying techniques, but I am intrigued by using Tokenole as a 'finish' Can this product be used as a final finish? I tried it on a piece of crust and the finish was beautiful. Is there any reason NOT to use it as a finish?

Cost? It is probably one of the more expensive products. Certainly here in the U.K. Acrylic Resolene would be my preference, which is designed more for this use. But my rule of thumb is also “Use what you’ve got”. Resolene isn’t cheaper if you’ve already got plenty of Tokenole in your workshop I guess.

How does the tokonol stand up as a finish in the long run, if youve had an opportunity to test that, that is?

Please double and triple check your audio, to adjust the noise of hammer strikes, and artifacts in the background. I just spent 5 minutes verifying this, and it's your video that has a high pitched whine. You have amazing content that sometimes gets very difficult to engage with because of the audio.

Cool technique, but I would prefer something subtler. Perhaps just drips of dye.
