I have to admit, basting quilts is NOT my favorite step of the process. Luckily, with the simple addition of pool noodles, the entire process can be MUCH easier.

When it comes time to baste a quilt, I'm really good at putting it off as long as possible. The thought of crawling around on the floor and dealing with kids and pets running across the quilt is enough to scare anyone away. But don't fret! By simply using 3 cheap pool noodles, that entire process can be simplified, sped up, and raised up.
This week we are showing you how to quickly and easily baste a quilt using pool noodles. This allows us to baste the quilt a small section at a time directly on our dining room table. No more bending over or dealing with pins stuck in the carpet (or spray baste making it all sticky!). Now is the perfect time to grab noodles as summer items are being released, so next time you are at the store, stick a few extra in and look forward to basting your next quilt project.

Any time! We figure since most of our quilts are big we need to learn to finish big quilts.

The noodles work great on narrower quilts. I had a wider quilt, so got a wooden dowel that fit snug in the noodle hole. Glued that to interior of the "adjusta-noodle" with enough sticking out to insert in another noodle. Expanding noodles ! ! Mine is snug enough to hold together but you could use masking tape if needed. Then I can use the exact width I need without having a dozen pool noodles to store.

To avoid scratches on my table as I am pin basting, I lay my 36x48 cutting mat down first and shift it under the area

Thank you for this great demonstration! Where do you find straight pool noodles? At the stores, the are always bent in a curve

You could check home improvement stores, you don't even need a pool noodle, you can get insulating tubes that are basically the same thing! They are foam noodles meant to go around pipes. They seem to be stored better and don't bend as bad

@@OnWilliamsStreet My sister and I were basting our quilts together watching how you do it with the noodle and we heard the crash and we both said -- it sounds just like us when we try to do this! We're knocking everything around with our batting and whatnot and, as you say, scissors flying every which way! We did not have noodles but we had some cardboard tubes from ordering home dec fabric and used those and it worked super great! Thanks for your ideas! We both came out with smoother quilts for sure!!

@@janicebadeau I'm glad it's not just us! I like to say I live in managed chaos most of the time. I'm so glad this method helped and love the idea of using the cardboard tubes! I'm all about repurposing.
