You are my most trusted Firearms expert on KZfaq. Thank you again for such an educational and simple solution. I look forward to one on shooting with 70 year old eyes. I can still shoot, I just can not seem to find glasses that work. The target is too blurring or the front sight is too blurry. Those days of 500 yard shots (easy) with open sights on the Garand are over. I have to scope everything to hit anything past a 100 yards. But I just can not put a scope on my pre-1900 Winchester 1894 (30-30) or my pre-1900 Winchester 1892 (44-40) or my Garand. It just would not be right. However, that really limits me to 100 yards with iron sights. I really hope you will do a KZfaq on how to get glasses that work for shooting for us less young shooters.

The Coast Guard was the last active service to use the M1 Garand. On our vessel, we had a crew of 150 but the arms room stocked only 50 M1 rifles. As a result, at annual range qualifications, 3 men used the same rifle. They certainly didn’t fiddle with the elevation drum. What we did was record the number of clicks for 100, 200, 300 and 500 yards on a notepad. When our turn with that rifle came up, we simply backed the elevation back down to the bottom and used our notepad information to shoot. Using this method, I fired expert consistently. On another note, I was a civilian employee (AST) at an Army Reserve unit for a few years before my IRS career. We had 150 pristine M14 rifles in the armory… beautiful weapons! I get orders one day to load them up in the back of a multifuel and haul them to Fort Carson and exchange them for M16’s. Those M14’s were shipped to some pissant “ally” nation. What a shame. The US GAVE 35,000 M14's to Israel in 1973 when the Yom Kippur war broke out. After the Yom Kippur war Israel spec'd every one of the M14's, and the 10,000 best ones were converted to the IDF sniper weapon. The remaining M14s were taken down for parts. The M14 with an attached 6x Nimrod scope was the Israeli Sniper Weapons System through 1997. In the mid 1990's Israel decided to go with a bolt action Mauser as their SWS. This led to having a bunch of M14s that were going to be surplus. So, Israel SOLD those free rifles back to Americans. I am not sure how Springfield Armory ended up with the guns, but they did. They brought the guns, minus the receivers (once a machine gun always a machine gun), back into the US

Crayola Crayons are staples for any range shooting bag. So is ladies lipstick and fingernail polish. The clear coat hard as nails has multiple uses from a replacement for Loctite to waterproofing primers on ammo. Fingernail polish can color front sights and color special loaded case heads the same as crayons can. You can mark shots on targets and they work in wet conditions for writing notes on targets. This is a great tip shooters seldom ever think about. ✨💎✨👍

If you were to add a little heat before you use the crayon it will cause the lettering to fill completely. Then after you clean off the excess apply a little heat again and it will set the crayon. You can thank me later (-;

Skookum!! Do you Nor'eastern folks know that term? I believe it originated in the forests, the timberlands here in the Nor'western region. That's the first place I recall hearing it, and often thereafter. It meant 'well done', a 'proper job', and so forth. I'm late to your series, after having finally purchased a Springfield M1A, and looking on KZfaq to see what folks were doing with them. I'm a few decades late in acquiring mine, because it wasn't a necessity for my safe full of mostly practical, functional arms. But it was a sentimental purchase, having carried and relied upon an M-14 as a Marine rifleman in Vietnam, 1966. Nary a problem, through several long, rapid-fire sessions, monsoons, immersions, and that red dirt on everything. I reckon you know what I mean. Anyhow, it still feels "just right" in my hands, 55 years later. Thanks for your suggestions, on this and numerous other related topics. Very worthwhile. No hot air, which is refreshing. But a lot of hands-on experience is quite evident. For a human sponge like me, that works. My regards.

I use the testers but yellow for my knobs, But the trick is to use Lacquer Thinner instead of Acetone to take off the excess and put painters tape around the knurled knob and use a fine painters brush .. No problem and it stays a lot longer than Crayon… BTW if U use WD 40 instead of alcohol it works really quick and easy…👍
