How to easily clean a gas mask or respirator in your kitchen sink.
You will need your respirator, a large sink, dish soap and warm water.
Make sure the filter is removed from the gas mask before you start.
Simply fill a sink up with warm water and dish soap and leave the mask submerged for 5-10 minutes.
Then simply drain the water out and leave the respirator to dry, if there are any areas of dirt that did not come off, gently scrub at them.
Once the mask is relatively dry use kitchen roll/paper towels to finish drying the inside and outside of the mask.
Afterwards if you want to, you can apply silicone lubricant to the mask to make it look brand new.

The Hungarian M76 gas mask? Personally I wouldn't leave that in the water very long because it has the canvas material on the outside, getting that too damp might cause damage to the mask, as the M76 is basically a reamke of the GM30 gas mask from WW2. Running it under the tap briefly and gently scrubbing the mask should be fine however.

Yeah you can take the mask apart in the exact same way. You may need to gently use pliers to remove the exhale cover if it doesn't move easily, just don't force anything. You might as well take the 40mm blanking plugs off when you clean it and just put them in the sink separate, that way water will get through the 40mm ports properly.

Word of warning 🤬🤬 I washed one of my schms soviet gas masks in the kitchen sink with tiny drop of washing up liquid. Now whilst not particularly rare ,they are quite interesting masks, good job I have 3... The mask rubber rapidly started to disintegrate in places with fine cracking throughout! Totally ruining it! I later discovered my lady had put some bleach in the sink and whilst the amount must have been greatly diluted in the soap suds,it was enough to destroy the mask... just a warning never to use bleach,even if highly diluted. I learnt something new at a cost, always make sure your sink is totally clean!

I just bought a GP-5 today and today you posted a video on how to clean a mask, haha. You've got a great channel. I've got an irrelevant question though. Do you think I could paint the gas mask black, considering it's made of elastic rubber? It's the typical grey GP-5.
@Weaponsandstuff93
@Weaponsandstuff93 6 жыл бұрын
You can't really paint masks, at least not stretchy rubber masks like the Soviet ones because the rubber stretches the paint wouldn't be even. Not sure if the paint might damage the rubber as well. Gas masks that are various colours are moulded to be those colours, so a dye if poured into the rubber when it is being made.
@Fasistoktonos_
@Fasistoktonos_ 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know, I was considering all of these factors. There are some latex paints and primers for such jobs (for special effects artists who create latex and silicone masks etc.), that's why I'm asking. But I don't know, it will probably look like shit. Thanks for the reply man. Oh and another one, sorry. Do you think it's a health hazard if I just have the mask sitting on a self in my room? I mean is there any possibility that the mask is contaminated with anything from asbestos from the filter or who knows what? Although it looks like new (made in '84) and it was probably stored in a box somewhere. Thanks.

The mask itself won't be hazardous, just don't use the filters. The masks and filters were supposedly made in different factories, so it's not like the masks themselves ever came into contact with asbestos unless you breath through the mask with an asbestos filter.

I was the first to watch this also if I removed the asbestos respirator off a vm40 gas mask and put a good 40mm filter on it could I were it
@Weaponsandstuff93
@Weaponsandstuff93 6 жыл бұрын
In theory there is nothing dangerous in the VM40 mask itself, but I'm not sure if the VM40 would fir a modern 40mm filter properly. Also be careful because in my VM40 there is a weird fibre material around the filter intake that's crumbling, I don't think it's asbestos but inhaling it might be bad.

Weaponsandstuff93 thanks man I’m gonna buy one I will try it with a regular filter if it works I’ll definently tell you and maybe you can do a video on it or something and keep doing awesome videos there really good I really like the British ww2 civilian gas mask because of the flapper valve. I was really looking for a long time for a new replaceable filter but I couldn’t find one so I saw your video on the vm40 that was amazing the gas mask guy said it actually was possible to put a good filter on a vm40 but I’m gonna find out at Christmas also how should I store the aspesdis filter is it worth it or should I through it in the trash

Some cosmetic changes may become noticeable and are expected during the normal aging process. White residue may appear and is caused by an FDA approved wax additive that is in the rubber by design. This wax was chosen because it is not harmful should it contact the user's skin. The wax affords the rubber the required protection it needs during expected product use. It is normal for this wax to come to the surface and can be cleaned by using MSA Confidence Plus (P/N 10009971). Rubber surface imperfections may be observed upon closer inspection of the mask and are typically caused by the white wax residue. These imperfections are also noticeable due to a "streaking" appearance where the wax does not come through the rubber. This rubber surface change is a result of the aggressive rubber primer used during the lens bonding process. It is required by the design to ensure a robust lens bond is made.

No, speech diaphragms are basically plastic discs, unless you have a mask with a really flimsy one it will be fine. If you're really worried about it, take the mask apart and take the disc out, wash everything else then clip it back together.

Recently bought a surplus polish MP5 gas mask that smells like damp and the visor is yellowish, Would this be a good way to clean it or do I need something else? Or just keep it as a start of a collection and never actually intend to use it? Cheers.
