In this video I test Canon EOS R5 video editing on my iPad Pro using luma fusion by lumaforge lumafusion. I test 8K canon RAW, 4K 30 FPS, 4K 60FPS, and 4K 120FPS slow motion in HEVC H.264 MP4. 10 bit 4:2:2 HEVC H.265 and 8 bit 4:2:0 .mp4 h.264.

Hey Max, can you test R6 with Atomos recorder and see how much it extends the overheating time in 4k30p and 4k60p?

Something is up with Adobe Premiere Pro under Windows 10. All those 10 bit 422 clips load into Adobe fine, and when you check them within Adobe Premiere Pro on a PC they show as 10 bit 420. I can tell from external programs they are really 10 bit 422. So either Adobe is doing something to handle them more smoothly, or misinterpreting the footage as 420 which is making things smoother on the timeline.

Max, check out this comment from LumaFusion from only 3 months ago: "LumaFusion currently only works in a 8-bit colorspace. So even if you import 10-bit media, it will be converted to work for 8-bit. HEVC is supported in LumaFusion, as long as your iOS device supports HEVC. So to answer your question, 10-bit is not recommended. But HEVC is supported. Here’s an article from Apple on HEVC... support.apple.com/en-us/HT207022 We do plan on implementing support for 10-bit media down the road."

I have been curious...can you connect an iPad Pro to a QNAP? I have been editing on an old iMac for years now. My 2012 iMac is finally choking. I picked up a 2020 MacBook Pro and it was surprisingly terrible. I went back to my iMac. Having seen this video and after having thought about doing this for a while, I want to get the iPad almost as my main workhorse and keep the iMac I am currently using connected to a QNAP. But I want to know if I can access files from the QNAP over the USB-C port on the iPad Pro for my editing?

It's mainly because of the 4:2:2. NVIDIA just has to update to support this in future hardware. It makes sense in the past to support only 4:2:0 and 4:4:4.

The camera can record proxies to the SD card. You DO NOT Have to transvode yourself.

Astral Productions I mean even if they don’t have that H.265 rendering with the magic of either hardware or software, or both, idk really, their chip designs are alteady more efficient and powerful than everything else on the market, including AMD’s Zen 2. But man do they have some talented engineers over there!

@@utubekullanicisi They basically created the push to H265/HEVC. Their hardware has been tuned to this new compression since the introduction of it. Apple ARM will be the only thing that can truly edit native H265 codecs easily, at least until Nvidia has a hardware encoding solution in Turing.

As far as I'm aware, the iPad and Lumafusion actually don't support 10bit Properly, it actually downgrades it to 8bit. It still is great for editing, but you're not getting the colour depth you think you are.

Small note on your Luma Fusion recommendation, it does not support 10bit so it converts 10bit files to 8bit. This is why your iPad Pro has shockingly "better" performance than your Mac Pro.

Now... it's so darn easy and buttery smooth to edit the footage on the R5! Just goes to show don't be too quick judge a camera (R5) that comes out with a new heavy unfriendly format. It doesn't take long for new hardware and updates to make the format more and more compatible!

No, you need proper drivers to utilise hardware efficiently. Let the things get updated. It'll be just fine.

Rishabh Sharma it’s often not about drivers at all, but in built hardware support. My iMac is old enough that it can’t do h.265 hardware decoding, and it simply never will. There’s a decent chance that everyone who wants to work on this stuff will need new hardware. One of the reasons Apple wants to go with their own silicon is everyone else has been slow to adopt the new protocols, such as Intel, with their release schedules falling Years behind, leaving new protocols lost to the distant future.

I’ve been screaming it from the rooftop for a year now that Apples GPU is insane. I was playing around with the 6K S1H files when it came out, no problem. Two stacked on the timeline with color grading... no problem with iPad Pro and LumaFusion. It’s a beast. It’s the only thing I’ll edit with.

People are having headaches with A7SIII footage too, but they are mostly keeping it quiet. It's like how they kept the Sony overheat issues quiet for the past 5 years.

You'll have the same issue if you choose the same codec, but there also H.264 all-i 10 bit 422 or HEVC 10 bit 4:20 to choose from and other 8 bit codecs.

Way to go. Thanks for this update. For us non video experts, its hard to get exposure to all the codecs, and which systems support them. Good to see the R5 will have great support soon. This was my last concern about this camera, and I think Canon has a great flagship camera.

Why doesn't Lumafusion update their app to add 10bit 422 HLG or other HDR output? And to add 8K output? They could... right? I wish Lumafusion was available on Android devices too, I believe Android devices ship with H265 decoding capable Arm chips too..

Johnie Butters has a video about this... the R5 actually shoots redundant to the SD card with proxies. No need to make proxies after. Additionally, if you change the timeline to 1080p while editing, things are smooth, just change back to 4K or 8K when exporting.

As someone who edits 8 bit 4K entirely on my iPad Pro and iPad mini, with no problems, this is fantastic news. I would prefer not to get a laptop/desktop but thought that I might have to to experience 10 bit 4K.

You are absolutely right, quite few other channels are showing 8k footage from R5 e.g Tony and Chelsea, non of them has mentioned editing problems and also camera Companies are not stupid that without hardware support they are giving this codec in their cameras as sony will announce tomorrow in A7siii

That is correct - BUT the rumors are also pointing to 4K 10bit 422 in h.264 All-I codec at 600 Mbps which should solve the issue on current systems, albeit with larger file sizes

But the B&H leaks already show that you can select both 10bit 4:2:2 or 10bit 4:2:0. So you can easily switch unlike the Canon and still get 10bit

So my questions are, Does it mean that, NVIDIA/AMD can't release a firmware update that can eat up the 10bit 4:2:2 HEVEC(H265) that canon is using or they have to do it in a release of a brand new GPU like the upcoming AMPERE and Big NAVI? Is it a graphics HARDWARE design flaw or is it something that can be fixed in a firmware update? Since i wonder why the only suggestion of this is APPLE silicon will do it..

Lol yea I do. I try my best :) We shoot with Sony a7iii's which record 6K and downsample it to 4K (about 90% of the detail of actually shooting 6K) and then output that to youtube in 4K :)

Great video Max! Regarding LumaFusion - it doesn't actually edit in 10bit, it drops it down to 8bit, so it might explain the super smooth playback :)

Does it do it on the fly or background transcode? I was able to edit the originals as soon as I imported the originals. Unless they have some kind of on the fly way to do it.

@@MaksimYuryev I honestly don't know what magic they do - but they have stated that 10bit editing isn't supported, but it is coming. Someone on the LumaFusion subreddit asked their support not long ago and got this response. "LumaFusion currently only works in a 8-bit colorspace. So even if you import 10-bit media, it will be converted to work for 8-bit. HEVC is supported in LumaFusion, as long as your iOS device supports HEVC."

@Max Yuryev Something is strange in Adobe Premiere Pro. In the Windows 10 systems I described in your previous video, I can easily edit the 4k/120p footage, which is 422, without using proxies or transcoding in any way or rendering the timeline at all. I can add effects all day, it all plays fine in the timeline. When I look at the clip properties inside Adobe it is saying its 10 bit 420 footage. I know it's not from your comments on your previous video, and from examining the file info inside PotPlayer. I am using the exact same clips you are using. Either Adobe is mistakenly processing this footage as 420, or they have done some trick inside to make it work. All the 10 bit 422 clips in 8k or 4k show up in Adobe as 420. So I'm not sure what the deal is but you can color grade them ok and all works fine. I do have to use proxies to work on ANY 8K footage on my system, it's just too much a pain with the frame skipping and pausing etc. While using proxies I have to toggle them OFF to do any color grading because the Proxy does NOT look identical to the original for color purposes.

What Are You On About can you tell what specs you ended up going for because I’m really torn if I between the base model or spending a little extra for more, I’m editing 2.5k raw from eos m magic lantern so I have to convert the footage before I edit what are you shooting with and editing?

Hi Max. I deleted an earlier comment, it was incorrect. Max is right folks, it's hardware accelerated in the GPU's - see the codec reference document. I'd have thought that it was done using the RISC instruction set and so could be changed with a driver update. I wonder if Canon can/will update the Camera firmware to give H265 4:20 or possibly even better H265 4:4:4? Anyway, Kudos to you Max, excellent bit of analysis. You've just made it possible for Canon to sell more R5's and frankly I think they owe you one - for free! BobUK.

I actually laughed when you said use and external recorder. I was just editing a vlog shot with the R5 in 4k 24 HQ and was thinking "why is this editing so much better than other footage" Then I heard you say that and was like, yep, that is exactly why thats easier. I record to prores on the ninja V.

I thought Apple T2 chips handle this HEVC codec similarly to the way their mobile A chips handle it

Probably a case of many many other chips surrounding the A-chip doing their thing. On iMac’s we get a tiny fraction of the mobile hardware with the T2 chip (mostly security, file handling, input devices, sound processing and a slice of image/video processing).

I just tested the sample 8K 24FPS HQ C-Log in Premiere with a Ryzen 3950x and while it wasn't perfect at playback, it is manageable (for a KZfaq video); export was 30 sec (for 15 sec video); the 4k version went smoothly;

For broadcast, it’s been standard for decades. We just don’t use HEVC.

luma fusion only works in 8bit what you are seeing is a 8bit file not 10bit

But I’m editing original 10 but 4:2:2 hevc files airdropped over to the iPad.

@@MaksimYuryev Not sure if the app has been updated, but read that Lumafusion does not support 10-bit video. It works in a 8-bit color space. You can import 10-bit video, but it will be converted down to 8-bit.

I'm really curious as to what makes it really easy for the iPad Pro. I'd like to see this format thrown onto a Galaxy Tab S7 as well when it comes out. Apple should really hurry up and unlock the Afterburner card for other types of codecs, also it'd be awesome if we could hook up an Afterburner card in an external enclosure to a Macbook Pro using Thunderbolt

Why am I having trouble even with proxies?? I am trying to edit 4k 60fps IPB. I am using a mac mini M1 with 16gb of ram and 1Tb of storage.... Please let me know what you think. Should i just transcode instead of using proxies?

I just love Lumafusion, but the latest upgrade gave some problem with files. Thanks to good personal support I got a work around. That would never happen with other apps.

Is 4:2:2 (As sony A7RV user now) still a bad choice, or is it ifnally supported? Soon will have Ryzen 7950x3d (16 core cpu).
