Several questions about what hub is being used... Covered it in this video here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qtiFpMJht73KY3k.html. BUT, depending on the mic you don't need a hub. If it's USB-C or Lightning you can connect directly into the iPad or iPhone. The Samson mic is USB-A, but also could be adapter to USB-C. The hub is useful too though as it has HDMI and a 3.5mm headphone jack and it was only $30ish (there's a link to it in the description).

Hey Blake, I saw your videos using ipad for home studio and I was wondering what are your recommendations for recording brass instruments, especially trumpets and trombones? I would like to be able to. Record my practicing so those are long form hour long sessions. even record concert practices in auditoriums. And also I would like to be able to edit and apply effects. I am planning on getting an iPad Pro 2021 Sometime this year. I did see your video about using irig for XLR mics so I would like to get a good microphone with the best reproduction. At current I have a snowball microphone interfaced with a regular iPad 10 inch.thanks

@iphoneographers 3 жыл бұрын
Would go with a dynamic mic... Shure SM57 (or SM58) and also the SM7B is where I’d start looking. You’ll need an XLR interface for the iPad (like the iRigPre or look at Focusrite ). Only thing to beware of is you’ll likely need to really push the input gain. And GarageBand will do a heckuva lot including adding effects and works with VST plugins. Good luck!

Can’t think of any mics with that feature per se, but if you use a mic with a cardioid pickup pattern it will diminish background sounds like computer fans, etc. It’s hard to say what mics are best because everyone’s voice is different and depends on what you’re recording, but Shure makes nice mics and so does RODE… amzn.to/3LA3uEh or maybe amzn.to/3sQPNKx

Lets say I have a really nice audio interface connecting a $1,000 mic (compatible with IOS/PC). How will this compare to connecting directly into a high-end PC? Would the iPad have a different noise floor and overall quality change? I'm trying to research this because the iPad will fit really nice into a booth and its a lot more complex to get my PC into the same setup.
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers Жыл бұрын
In my experience, primarily no. Especially with USB mics. Though mics can sound somewhat different, in particular analog XLR mics, depending on how you record them. For example, using a Focusrite Scarlett Solo I notice when using my Neumann condenser and recording directly into my Mac (via USB-C) it has a bit more bass response than if I record into my Sony camera. This is most likely because of the preamps. But then going to the iPad I hear really no difference. But the noise floor on all are pretty much the same. Others may have a different experience, but that’s been mine. I use my iPad and my iPhone all the time to record VOs and they sound great.

It’s really a subjective call, personal preference. Either will work fine. I personally use my iPad Pro all the time to record audio because it’s just convenient. While recording in any of these apps, could you multitask with another app or browser and still record? The situation I'm looking at specifically is using a video call platform to chat with the host of a show while recording the audio-only in a separate app for higher quality.
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 3 жыл бұрын
Haven’t tried that, but probably wouldn’t work because you’d be using the microphone in the main app. In that case it probably makes sense to just use an external recorder (could just be an iPhone) with a microphone plugged in as your back up higher quality audio.

The reason you have to crank up the volume level when using those inexpensive mics for podcast recording is because you have no pre-amp. If you get a pre-amp box or similar accessory, you won't have to risk blowing out your ears overdriving the mic (remember, if you happen to get an iOS notification while you're recording, it will be at a very high volume level).
