Hey good sir, i been watching your videos and was wondering. I have a 1970 C10 with a 307, it still has points in it, im getting spark through the center wire to the distributor but the points themselves are not sparking. Ive never worked on an older vehicle and any tips on how to diagnose would be extremely helpful. Its been sitting thirty years and ive replaced the starter and points and condenser, it does turn over at full speed im just absolutely stumped what to do next.

if you hook up a afr gauge in conjunction with a vacuum gauge you'll see your highest vacuum reading is fat on the afr. Run the vehicle and tune with an afr gauge. You will be able to see all the functions of a carb. On my 600 4160 that is on a 305 I came down on squirter from 31 to 21, and up on pv from 6.5 to 10.5. It takes all the guessing out of it.

Could you do a video on setting timing? My truck seems to only want to crank and run with distributor way retarded. Starts wanting to stall when i try to put it at 12 degress btdc

Like a pro ? A *real* pro would use a 4 gas or 5 gas tailpipe sniffer like an old outdated California Smog test machine that still works fine. I worked for The Carb Shop in Costa Mesa Ca for ~roughly~ 15 years +/- a bit and have built and dyno'd thousands of carbs of any sort you can imagine and few you can't. Vac gauges are for shade tree wrenches that have no feel, no ear, and no experience. 36* total w/o vac is too much....what is the initial ? What is the advance curve setup like ? how many degrees does the vac can give and is the limiter still on it and not rotted away (like 90% of them) ? These things should all be taken into consideration before you even reach for the timing light. That simple arse cheapo model 1850 can be set by ear every bit as well as with a vac guage....turn them lean till it drops RPM slightly, back out till RPM is back up then back out addl 1/4 turn. Go back and forth a few times till it's dead nuts. You showed your flaws quite nicely with the loose alt belt squeel that takes 1 whole minute to tighten......1/2 wrench and a prybar.
