Hi from Australia Matt. Those don't look very ripe yet. If you wait til the skin shrivels and gets quite wrinkly and hollow sounding when u tap it, the fruit inside will be darker and sweeter.

They are absolutely delicious. $2.50 a piece is so expensive, though. I live in the Netherlands, and at my local supermarket you can get six for just Є3. That's just $3.50 in USD! What makes it even more surprising is that you can actually grow them in Arizona, and there's no way you'd be able to grow them in this country without a greenhouse. I think you've got a great opportunity to corner the passion fruit market in Arizona. ;P
@inthekitchenwithmatt

Yes, so expensive! I don't even bother buying them at the store. I took some clippings from that one I planted in my friends yard and planted it in my parents yard, haha. So now I have two yards with them. This past season I probably got 50 of them for free from my friends yard. I know right? If I had a big yard I would grow several of these and set up a little fruit stand and sell them, lol :)

In Ireland I bought 3 passion fruit for 40 cents. I don't chew the seeds nor spit them out I just swallow them. The seeds are tiny and easy to swallow, which makes it simple to eat them for me. It tastes somewhat like a sour, sherbet mango. The skin/shell halves when you are done with them remind me the green shell of a horse chestnut in the colour of a chestnut, without the prickles. I reckon they are probably better in a fresh juice blend, to add some flavour, than eating on their own.

Awesome! :) They may be a bit tart, it depends on when they were picked. Unfortunately they won't ripen a ton off of the vine. But the flavor should develop a bit more. @antoniorsoftware
@antoniorsoftware 2 жыл бұрын
You say the one from your friends is sweet, but the one from supermarket is sour. That is my problem with basically all fruit from supermarket; big producers simply pick them too early and don't let the fruit mature enough; so fruit like berries ends up being sour, while others taste like grass. I bet many people, especially in big cities, grow up not liking fruit, because they never even had the chance to taste the real thing. I for example wonder how a fresh and ripe banana should really taste, because we know they pick them still completely green and they turn yellow in transport.
@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 2 жыл бұрын
You are not wrong! If you can, try specialty markets and farmer's markets their fruit are usually fresher and tastier. But yes, the big supermarket chains, import from super far away and they have to buy them unripe for longer shelf life. Or just grow your own, haha. But that of course is not feasible for most people. Nothing like fresh ripe fruit right off the tree or vine. :)
@biloz2988
@biloz2988 Жыл бұрын
Matt, you sound so amateur. The fruits have to be picked before ripening bec by the time they get to the stores where people can buy them they will ripe. One should buy all fruits in different age so they can eat the ripe ones first then the next the ones that ripened and so forth. That way you never miss any ripe fruit or throw any. The trick is to know how to pick. Not every town and city has farmers market so to suggest going to one is not appropriate.

Thank you and you are welcome! The color of the passion fruit ranges from purple to yellow and even green. The ones I grow here in AZ are rarely purple, usually green/yellow. And the taste will range from sweet to sour as well, all on the same vine. The Maracuja is type a passion fruit, meaning they belong to the same family, but they are two different fruits. :) Here is an interesting article: www.lsg-group.com/news/stories/global-food-myths-2-is-passion-fruit-and-maracuja-the-same-fruit/

Was the passion fruit from your friend the same color? Well, let me tell you something when people use commercial fertilizers or pesticides especially it makes fruits bitter and sour. Oh the home grown passion fruits are so much better than these shown in the video. So so so much better. And so much cheaper. This past season my friends got nearly 200 passion fruit. At the store they cost like 2$ for 1! But freshly picked will always be better I think. I have still tasted decent passion fruit bought from the store. I am not sure what pesticides are used for commercially grown passionfruit. At least here in the Phoenix area no pesticides are needed because the fruit doesn't seem to get bothered by any insects. But then again, I have only experience local backyard grown ones here in the Phoenix. I don't think there are any commercial growers here. Now in a place like Hawaii or Florida where they have huge fields of them and different insects that may be a different story.
