How to Effectively Teach Diphthongs

Sometimes it can be hard to come up with a student-friendly definition of the word “diphthong,” but I hope the information here will help! In this video, I explain what a diphthong is, share how to teach it, and explain a few activities I use for teaching diphthongs.

What is the difference between variant vowels and diphthongs? Are some diphthongs also variant vowels, like ou? I’m studying for certification and I’m so confused 😞

Hi Julia! Variant vowels are more like "vowel teams." They are two vowels that come together to make a long vowel sound. So for instance, "ai" and "ay" both make the long a sound. "ee" and "ea" both make the long e sound. With diphthongs, the vowels end up producing an entirely different sound than a normal long vowel sound. The sound begins as one vowel but then moves to another.

Is there a rule for when to use ow opposed to ou? Or aw opposed to au?

Hey there! Great question. Usually "ou" is used more for the beginning or middle of words, and "ow" is used more at the end of the word. Similarly, "au" is used more for the beginning or middle of words, and "aw" is used more at the end of the word. As with most phonics, though, exceptions always exist!

Why is aw-au considered a diphthong? I don't hear a vowel glide in this. I only hear one vowel sound. Isn't this a vowel digraph? It seems like it fits the way you described oo more than the other diphthongs.

Hey Lucy! I consider it a diphthong because the /w/ and the /u/ in the combinations above make the vowel change from one sound to another whereas in a digraph it makes just one sound.

@@learningattheprimarypond Sorry, that doesn't answer my question. Perhaps it's a difference of accent, but I only hear one sound in au and aw, not two. Could you share the two vowel sounds you hear using IPA? One of the examples you gave was claw, which I would transcribe as /klɔː/. This only has one lengthened vowel sound, not two. I hear the vowel glide in the other 2 examples, and see the correlation in their IPA, like cow /kaʊ/ with /aʊ/ and boy /bɔɪ/ with /ɔɪ/. Thank you!
