Need to empty your RV tanks with no hookups? Here is how you can empty your RV tanks and not need to move your RV.
Thetford Tote goo.gl/NB39Th
Flow Jet Macerator goo.gl/J9SLDN
This is a great way to empty your tanks while Boondocking. You have to be extremely careful to check everything but if you want to empty your Grey or even your Black tanks while not having any hookups this is an option.

Great video & well explained. Another option that I found that was really convenient for me, no gloves required, was since the nearest dump station is over 50 miles away is to catch one of those Honey Bucket (Porta Potty) trucks doing there route and have them suck out my tanks. It is well worth the $40 it costs me.

There’s a beach camping site we go to in SoCal that has water but no sewer. They have a guy who comes every day or two and you can pay him. He’s driving one of those honey bucket trucks. It’s nice because we shower a bunch going back and forth to the sand. He charges like $10/dump but he’s doing a BUNCH of RV’s at once (rather than driving all the way out to some boondocking site you’re at).

This is amazing, many ppl have mas toilets. To avoid that, this is a great idea. All the videos that I watch stay in my history so I can show my husband. 3 yrs with out 17 ft trailer and we are still adding and learning. The campgrounds are too expensive, we like the trailer to go off the grid. Who knew that once the kids grew up the noise would still not stop?

Good video. I have done this also. It beats the heck out of pulling the noisy tote tank at very slow speed around roads that have speedbumps. And I have found it to work so good for us that I bought a regular rv holding tank that fits in behind our hitch. It stays there during our trips, and is low enough to hitch and unhitch without problems. I added a valve to empty which makes it neat, and when I fill it I just hold the end of the hose into the cap opening( I extended the wires of the hand switch to reach the truck). I can see when the level gets up and I stop the flow. I usually make a couple of trips to the station, so I have to lay the hose down, so I just screw a hose cap on the end of the hose and that keeps stuff from getting on the ground. I only use our tote tank (that has wheels) for dumping our tanks at home. I pull it with my lawnmower to our septic cleanout port, and we only have to do that when a hurricane causes power loss and we use the rv to be comfortable during the recovery. One other thing, we have to make sure no body throws anything down the toilet that might jam up the macerator causing a messy unclog procedure. With grandkids, you never know what might end up down the toilet. Lol.

After seeing it, i broke down and ordered one, but our "new" rv was in the shop so much, we only got to RV once last season. But, i really got it for using even at home. We had so much smoke last year from fires, the RV was the safest place to breath, but the tanks were a real concern! Our cabin is pretty airy and smoke just filled it, too! I bought the tank, but no way could we handle the weight and getting it into the truck full! But, i could not figure out how to hook the mascerator up to the electrical. No one shows that part.

Thanks Jared. I've seen the totes. Wasn't sure how to master the transfer. One of our favorite parks does not have full hookups, just a dump station. We went there lots of times with our pop up camper and used the bathhouse of course. Now we're in a 16' bunkhouse travel trailer with one of the smallest blank tanks on the market (10 gal. - dayum). Good to know you were once a newb too. Thanks for all your good work. Keep us newbs straight now ya hear.

Been doing this for 4 months! Except we don't use a macerator. We have the 32 gal. big blue tote we dump to, then use ramp up into the bed of truck and haul to dump station like you did. The macerator way would be much easier on the back since pulling that 32 gal up our steep ramp does take some pulling power. Good stuff! Keep up the informative videos!!

That pump is a brilliant innovation. I’d seen the various brands of totes before, which are fine if you have a dump point relatively close by. I’m in Australia and dump stations are designed and situated here for travel trailers up to around 24’ max, so verging on the impossible for anything over that size. As I’m importing a 40’ Montana, emptying my waste tanks WAS a major concern for me. Now I can put the tote onto the back of the truck and pump up to it. Very nice idea,,,,thanks to KYD for leading us to you.

We have been using big blue for about 5years now. It is a 42 gallon tank. We stay at a lot of state and national parks that have water and electric but no sewer. I get a lot of funny looks while towing it to the dump station but i do not move the camper and my wife gets her showers. One of the common complaints in reviews is about them over filling and spilling. I have 35 gallon black and grey tanks. That is why i have the 42 gallon tank. I like your timer idea. If you are going to tow it, i suggest having a safety rope. Our tank handle just goes over the hitch. I had it come lose once. Luck it was on the trip back. 42 gallon is very heavy but it pulls like a wagon so pretty easy. I do like the pump idea. It is a beast to get into the back of the truck. Thanks for the video.

I am in need of something! I thought i could rig a ramp into the truck. I got a 50 to be safe. We use it as needed during fire season as well as trips for repairs , so we rarely get to actually use it for fun! I really need help to back it down my dangerous drive so don't want to be running to the dump every week. Well, the ramp wasn't strong enough and neither were we! Soooo this would work but I am wondering how you do the electrical? There is an outlet in our basement or pass thru. But this sounds like you connect it to a battery. I have a 12V portable battery for starting cars and pumping tires. How would i connect it?

I have a RV lot in a gated community with power and water but no sewer, seasonal use only. They have a free dump site 1/3 mile away from my lot. I have a tote and have pulled it behind my truck to empty it at a small camp site we stayed at once, you have to drive very slowly when pulling it (plastic wheels). I have considered doing this at my RV lot but its along way and slow going. I think the cost of one of these pumps less than $230 might be worth it, plus some friends in lots next to me could use it as well. Thanks, great idea to make camping a little easier!

Have you thought about putting the tote onto a towable garden wagon or small ATV trailer? You can grab a decent one for about 100 bucks, and that'll give you some nice pneumatic tires so you can keep the tote safe and do a more reasonable speed. The good thing is it doesn't take up any more space than the tote itself, and you can move it easier on grass/gravel than with those plastic wheels.

@Milesco
@Milesco 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, it seems to me that it would be easier and less likely to have problems if you just connect the black tank outlet directly to the tote _without_ adding in a macerator and the additional hose connections. That's just more work, more hose connections, and more chance of something going wrong. Really, the only time you need a macerator is if you _don't_ have a tote or a dump station to dump your waste into. (e.g., you have no choice but to pump your wastewater into a toilet.)

@Milesco
@Milesco 4 жыл бұрын
@@flyn333 : Yeah, my comment was a response to Mike's and was made with the assumption that the waste water was just going to be drained directly into a tote that was below the outlet (which I believe is what Mike was describing). Obviously if your empty tote is already in the bed of a truck, then you'll need the macerator to pump the wastewater up into the tote.

Ive used a Flowjet for over 10 years and they work..BUT a word of maintenance...every so often open the motor up and clean it out as it develop rust and can lock up - lube the shaft as well...sort of a hassle but it needs to be done....if you are using it regularly then it might not be an issue but if its occasional then you better do this.

A macerator is almost essential in the UK, most dump sites are designed for European cassette toilets (they've got to be gross) and I need a good 30ft of 1inch flexi pipe (never use lay flat hose - they kink) to pump from the road up to the disposal point (usually 2ft above ground). I remember reading somewhere, I think it was during the early 90's, Winnebago had an option for a holding tank emptying system, I forget what it was called, but it consisted of a peristaltic pump sucking out the holding tank contents and injecting them into the 454 exhaust, just behind the catalytic converter, incinerating it and presumably blowing a little residual ash out the exhaust pipe too. The system had a dash switch to turn it on and it was activated when the speed sensor read above 40mph. Now if you were to make a DIY system, injecting a fraction of the amount the original did as close to the manifold of your generator as you can get, you'd have a great system for wild camping...

We spend the whole summer at a campground that only has water and electric hookups. We employ a similar setup with a macerator pump and a plastic 55 gallon drum in the back of our tow vehicle (one-ton Ford PU). The drum has a 3" ball valve screwed into the bung hole for our dump valve and we fill through the 1" vent hole that is located at the top of the lid when it is oriented on its side. We use a inch and a quarter clear poly hose between the macerator and the drum as our fill line. We also ran a set of electrical leads from the battery through the storage compartment and terminated them in the area adjacent to the wastewater dump valves. This make everything very convenient. Our dump location is at a state park located only 1 mile from the campground at a cost of $8 per trip. We only dump the black water tank so we can go 10 to 14 days between dumps. If we were to have a local sanitary pumper come to dump it is $45 to $50 a visit. The cost of the macerator pump paid for itself in the first summer.

We timed it just using fresh water first. For us we set a timer every time we use it for 3 1/2 minutes. That gives us some extra wiggle room to flush the hose with either the grey tanks or fresh water to clean it out. We usually dump every four to five days so that we only have to take one trip to the dump station. If we go longer it will take two sometimes three trips for the size of tote that we have.

Really like the idea of a macerator (expensive RVs have this built in) and the 27 gallon tote in the truck bed. Would also consider using five gallon buckets and a lid, mostly because many end up just transporting GRAY WATER only. The 27 gallon tanks can cost $200 and that is just crazy money for something that does not last ten years for parts and support. And also thinking that macerator has got to cost some serious bucks. Many take the direction of keeping the BLACK TANK input to a minimum so it can last a week before being dumped. Via composting toilet or making sure they go to the public restrooms often.

Hello there and thanks for the macerator pump tips! I’ve used one in my basement for years and never thought to use one with my travel trailer! All good points about how to go about it. I would add to use the one hose dedicated to just that one chore! I’d hate to get it crossed up with a fresh water hose! Now obviously this is not a total cure all, cause the tote is only 23 gals, that leave you with 22 gals of black and 1 for flushing the equipment. But I could also see using that system when at a site with a sewer hookup, so there is no need for a big 6” hose and bridge setup to keep the gravity flowing downhill! I wonder if campsites would allow it? Especially if the garden size hose was connected to a tank flange at the tank end that would secure the hose to the tank inlet. That would really make short work of draining both tanks when full! Oh yea that’s another point to be made, never leave your tank valves open when connected to a full service camp site sewer drain! The tanks are not designed to constantly flow! NI they are designed to get filled over time, then hook up and then drain the tanks when full! That way solids in the tank will have plenty of liquids to help force them out! If you leave the valves open, the solids can end up resting on the bottom of the tank, outlet pipes or hose! That could end up really solidified never to get flushed out! Oh well take care out there, be safe and have fun!

Hi! Great video, thank you! I'm considering full time camper living. How often do you think this process would need to be done with only one person using the toilet, unless there's guests of course? TIA!

Have you seen anything that would be larger and mount in the bed of your truck around the goose neck connection? I would like to carry 50 gallons. I've seen water tanks that mount behind the cab put they won't have the right hose connection on them.

Any thoughts on converting to a composting toilet? My thoughts are to incinerate the waste. No black water tank needed or to drain. Only grey water, which is easier to dispose of. If you are off-grid, and you use eco-friendly soaps, just dump grey water in a safe area. We are looking into getting a travel trailer and I am curious on thoughts from experienced campers.

We looked into doing a composting toilet and decided not to because we are a family of four. We would have to dump the liquids often and would go through quite a bit of coconut husks. For us, it came down to the convenience of dumping the black tank over a composting toilet. I do think they are great if they work for you and your family.

Where do you store your store your tote when not in use. If it’s near the tailgate of truck I take it that the fifth wheel clears it when hooking up the RV.

I always felt like the 5th wheel guys could mount two 30 gallon tanks on the left and right of the bed of the truck bed. One fresh water and one black water. Is that possible?

I get wanting to macerate the solids to make the final dump and cleanup simpler when dumping black waste water, but if you are only moving grey waste water, couldn't you hoist the tank up a ramp into the truck bed with block and tackle? $75 solution (cost of ramps + block and tackle rig), and even with 300 lbs of liquid in the tank, you'd probably only need the equivalent of a few 30 lb pulls on the rope to get it up there. I've never tried this, but would be interested if you or any of your subscribers might have done so.

Great video, thanks. I have to say, the reviews on these tanks (Thetford and CamCo) are not stellar. One guy talked about how his Tote2 wheels melted because he towed the unit (5MPH) at a slight incline. Another said the Thetford wheels fell off on first use. I'm sure some bad reviews are a combination of pilot error and/or misuse, but it sure doesn't instill confidence. The Camco 36 gal is weeks backordered everywhere. They also get the bad-review award for seam cracks, leaks and failed hoses. Holy cow. But I gotta do this, so really looking for the best I can do. :)

I have that same Tote but bigger, my problem was I had to drag it to the dump site by the handle with my truck hitch ball which worked great and it was made for that, The weight of the tote prohibited me from lifting it onto my truck tailgate to drive it to the dump site so Im glad I found your video to show how I can put it on my tailgate as well. The question I have about the Macerator, is it a powerful enough to chop up all the toilet paper or does it ever get clogged with paper. Also the other note about that Tote I found the twist on connections suck they slip off and can make a mess unlike the orange hose system that has notches on the hose connections.

Sorry I didn’t see this comment earlier! We flush our toilet paper (but we do use rv specific tp) and we have never had an issue with the toilet paper clogging up the macerator. When we are in our home state we use the macerator and tote every four to five days so we can make one trip to the dump station instead of two if we filled our black tank fully. This also allows us to wash out lines with either grey water or fresh water.

And we had an issue with our hose hookup also with our tote. We bought a new hose and cut the end off and used an adhesive/sealant and tightened a hose clamp on there. So far we haven’t had any issues with it since doing that for over a year now

I have used the same sewage pump as yours for the past four years on my 5th wheel. At one location I was camped 30 feet from a bathroom where I ran the hose through a window and into the toilet for dumping. At another location I was camped over 100 feet from a sewer clean-out plug that I ran the hose to for dumping. The pump worked very well far beyond its maximum stated pumping range (with 3/4" hose). One note: Do not put items which the pump can not chew up down your RV's toilet or sinks. Use wire mesh strainers on your shower and sink drains to catch hard materials such as bits of plastic, unpopped popcorn, etc. Hair (especially long hair) will wrap around the pump's cutting blade and choke the pump. Heavy-duty nylon reinforced paper towels thrown in the toilet will jam the pump because they can not be cut up easily. Also: Do not get in a hurry to pump the tanks as it is possible to start the pump and forget to connect the hose to it! Aaaa! That was a shower I really did not need!

Pumps and many other mechanical devices are usually under-rated and are able to do more than their makers state. That is because their makers do not want a lot of warranty returns from people using their products at their actual capacity and wearing them out before the warranty expires.

If the tank is in your truck, and above the rv gate valve, and you time it and close the gate valve, isnt the hose sitting there full of 'stuff'? And this stuff has no place to go but out of the hose and all over once you disconnect, no?
