Geoff Moss of MPH MOTOR PANELS gives me a lesson in wheeling a Lotus 11 panel. This lesson will be really helpful for those who want to learn advanced English wheel techniques because you've got the classic high crown sitting next to a low reverse. Geoff emphasizes the need for 1) Low pressure 2) a balanced raising of the crown and lowering of the reverse 3) narrow tracking pattern for a smoother finish 4) anticipating what will happen NEXT (thinking several steps ahead).
I took Geoff's class in Liskeard, Cornwall, England in mid-Novermber, 2012, and learned much from it in a short time. He's been wheeling for over four decades, and began helping his father make panels for early Lotus', Vanwalls, Lolas, and many more. You can find out about arranging a class that fits into your schedule by contacting him at: www.mphmotorpanels.com

William Longyard and Geoff Moss a very happy Christmas and New Year to you both. William, you have done the craft a great service with all of your videos and especially Geoff Moss. I only hope William that you return to England for more of Geoff. Geoff, admire you greatly, would love to work with you. Noted the DB2 bonnet in the background, reminds e of XMC-76 that I did a lot of work on years ago. All the best.

@@williamlongyard5887 Enough to make you take up "rollies" and have a smoke. There is a culture that is too readily dismissed in today's world. William and Geoff have it in buckets, I admire you greatly. We restored the OHMSS Bond car by the way in Australia, however the biggest Aston Job was a DB6 Volante where we made 85% of the entire body. You will know it if you ever see it, the door and opening gaps are finished in polished aluminium like a Lamborghini 400, both superleggera bodies. The car left Australia some time ago.

I've done Geoff's one week wheeling course. Best course I've ever been on, he's an excellent tutor and doesn't constantly peer over your shoulder. If you're an aspiring metal shaper do it. He has students come from all over the world.

I love watching an expert metalworker. Obviously one of the best, and a good teacher as well. There is an awful lot to take in when you are starting out. What have I learned so far? Patience and perseverance, and attention to detail. I've been into cars for a long time, and have always enjoyed the voluptuous curves designers have put into them. We men are hard wired to be attracted by the twenty per cent rule, and the idea behind those long soft curves, is not lost, on the car designers.

I like watching metal work with the English Wheel. I looked at the comments to see how often his cigarette was mentioned. I'm happy to see people speaking up against smoking. I do have to say, he gets a lot of miles out of one smoke.

@lukedgee, Out of his depth? Geoff produces some of the finest work I have ever seen. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is second to none! The workshop full of jaguars, aston martins and lotus are show the quality of work he produces!

William Longyard Did Geoff use 1050 aluminium for this work? Also, did he anneal it first? I've read that 1050 can be wheeled up without annealing but I'm sceptical about this. Thanks for the great vids :)

Can't you just get a close fit and rivet the panels to a truss understructure? Would that ruin the sleek aluminum look?
@williamlongyard5887
@williamlongyard5887 9 жыл бұрын
If a rivet is used to pull the body down on to an understructure, the panel will warp and look ugly. The correct shape has to be put into the panel first. Thanks for your question! : )

Does the metal become stretched to the point it becomes brittle, thus needs annealing or is this not a factor?
@williamlongyard5887
@williamlongyard5887 9 жыл бұрын
English wheeling will not cause the panel to work harden because it imparts gentle shape changes slowly. Hammering over a highly curved buck does sometimes cause aluminum to work harden, but it is a simple matter of re-annealing the panel and resume shaping. Very infrequently you might need to anneal, or even anneal twice during a shaping process.
