If your looking to sell your computer or you going to recycle it, then you need to erase all the data on that hard drive or SSD.
Even after you format you your computers hard drive the data can be recovered using simple hard drive data recovery software.
hard drive recovery software can recover years of data from the hard drive, this could be your photos, videos, documents and anything else you have on that hard drive.
This could even be sensitive data like banking details. Its very important that you securely erase the data from that hard drive before you sell or get rid of that old computer. This will make it impossible to recover overwritten files from that hard disk.
There is many types of software and ways to wipe a hard drive clean and there is also many different hard drive overwriting methods like.

Great video as always, probably worth mentioning that this will erase the operating system if selling the computer, so the seller may wish to make a recovery USB to give to the buyer.

For those people using the multiple overwrite algorithms please be aware that you are just wasting your time. A single pass of zeros is more than good enough to make data unrecoverable. However, the drive has (or should have) it's own built in methods for wiping the drive which Parted Magic's Secure Erase app does use! :-) The advantages of this are that the drives G-List should also be wiped and that the drive handles the erasure internally so the app can't tamper with this process (either accidentally or deliberately). Writing zeros from an app running on an OS has both of these limitations. The only methods not currently covered in Parted Magic are those for changing the encryption keys on drives which support on-drive (or self encrypting) standards. In principle changing the keys on those drives would be virtually instantaneous (assuming the drive supports the relevant ATA commands such as CRYPTO_SCRAMBLE_EXT) and would be virtually impossible to reverse.

Just a comment here, couldn't you also do a system restore and reset your computer to factory. That's what I have done to mine a few times when it acts up. I don't have anything important on my computer, that's why I do this. When I do a factory restore, it lets me know that everything will be wiped out and my computer will return back to how it was when I first bought it..

Yeah that's another method, but does it overwrite the drive data beyond recovery.

Yes, yes it does indeed. The computer tell you that if you are planning on donating or selling your computer, you should do a recovery factory reset, well, that's what my computer tell me. You know what Britec09, I feel so very honored to get a reply from you. I feel special. :-)

@@Britec09 I can't even remove all the partitions off the hard disk using Disk Manager. Just the main partition's gone but there still appearing a 100MB EFI partition and a 499MB recover partiton. What should I do?

I need help! Have a hard drive that want to remove everything off it, do to a realtek audio driver not installing, I've formatted the hard drive. And reinstalled windows 3 times, and the sound shows unknown, and the old windows key is still in the system. Any help would be appreciated.

Could be a problem with the hardware like on your motherboard. I don't think its the hdd's fault if you re downloaded windows 3 times.

Is there any way to analyse a drive and run comparisons after a wipe has been completed. Apart from checking the Hex value of drives and attempting recovery do you have any other solutions?

When emptying the drive completely you also delete the operative system. You need a operative system to be able to boot up your computer so you need to install a new OS on a usb and put it in your computer to be able to boot it.

You can run chkdsk from admin command line. If there are currupted files present it will log them. If errors are present run chkdsk /F /R then restart. But be prepared to find something else to do for 5 or so hours. When it restarts the corrupted will be gone. I had the same issue with some node_modules packages.

what if your hard drive and SSD become corrupt and you can't even recovery or "repair" it in the windows bios system? im guessing this is the best solution? wipe it completely then download windows 10 again?

In that case you don't need to wipe anything. You just need to reinstall your OS and make sure you delete all partitions on the drive before proceeding to install the OS.

You can still get data back even after this kind of wipe, but for an end user I guess it's ok.

@@paulmarquez5717 I'm not an expert, so I don't know how, but I've seen successful attempts. The Pentagon used to do the DoD 5220.28-STD 7-pass method for their drives, but they replaced that with physical destruction of the disk, since even that kind of wipe isn't safe anymore.

Thats cool, i just wondered as you dont need to download anything extra or use a usb flashdrive when you use diskpart, you got everything you need. I also remembered that you can also get to your bios by holding shift down while restarting, then click on trouble shoot followed by advanced and then UEFI settings and click on restart.

Why do that. I have 5 hard drives. Two I use for experimental operating systems, I wipe them all the time and reload a new o/s . Just get a dvd and install wipe disk image. Works perfectly all the time
