How To Etch Wine Glasses
by Jennifer and Kitty O'Neil
The O'Neil Sisters
Running With Sisters
Etch wine glasses with your own custom design. These make a great gift! We'll show you every step with this glass etching video tutorial.
Have you ever used etch cream to etch wine glasses? It's easy! In our step-by-step video tutorial we'll show you just how easy it is to etch a set of wine glasses with your own personalized and custom design.
Even if you've never etched wine glasses before, you can do this DIY gift project. We'll show you exactly how to use the chemical etch cream Armor Etch to etch wine glasses.
How To Etch Wine Glasses
Materials
4 wine glasses
Armour Etch Cream
Scroll and swirl stickers
Rubbing alcohol
*We got the stickers at Hobby Lobby!
Tools
Soft bristle craft paintbrush
Scissors
Gloves
Masking tape
Cotton swabs
Timer
Instructions
1. Mask off the area you want to etch.
2. Make a custom design using stickers on the bowl of the wine glass.
3. Clean the wine glass between the stickers using a rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab to remove any fingerprints.
4. Paint a thick layer of etch cream on the wine glass covering the stickers. Set the timer for one minute. Then rinse the wine glass under running water.
*The glasses are perfectly safe once you rinse the etch cream off and wash them. The etch cream is no longer on the glasses. It just does its job etching (like sand blasting) then is washed away. The glasses are permanently etched but no chemicals are left.*
5. Peel off the stickers and masking tape. Rinse the wine glass again.
Custom etching wine glasses is a fun way to personalize cocktail glasses or wine glasses with initials. names, or phrases. Just use letter stickers to create your design. Are you feeling nervous about etching? Ask us any questions. We're here to help!
Happy Crafting,
Jennifer & Kitty

So sorry you are not getting good results! A few of our troubleshooting tips are: make sure the glass is completely clean and free of grease from fingers, use a lot of etch cream, and leave the etch cream on for the amount of time specified on your etch cream bottle. We have written instructions for this project on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-etch-wine-glasses/ Hope that helps! J&K

@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tammy, Sorry you got an unwanted spot from the etch cream. The etch cream really etches the glass. Like sand blasting. The cream itself can be washed away, but the glass is permanently etched. Maybe you can turn it into part of the design. J&K

Great Video! Always wanted to try this! Love Crafts. Question...when applying the stickers can I use disposable gloves? Would I then have to clean the glass with rubbing alcohol? No finger prints? Also...it's a "chemical" ... applying all the way to the "top rim" of the glass????
@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 3 жыл бұрын
Great questions Carole! Using gloves might help, but there may still be finger prints on the glass. So you shouldn't skip the rubbing alcohol step. Also, the glasses are perfectly safe to drink from after you rinse the etch cream off and wash them. The etch cream does not stay on the glasses. It just does its job etching the glass (like sand blasting). The etch cream is then washed away, leaving the glass etched but no chemicals left. @TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Carol. The last step in etching the glasses is to wash them thoroughly. The etch cream chemically etches the glass to make it frosted, but once it is rinsed away the glasses are safe. Wine will not stain the glass. Cheers to that! Jennifer & Kitty

Is it possible to dye/add color to the etching cream? Or would you have to buy colored ones? Love your videos ladies ❤
@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 6 жыл бұрын
The etch cream we are using chemically etches the glass. It's like a chemical version of sand blasting and takes off the outside layer of glass making the surface less shiny and therefor frosted. You wash the etch cream off. So there's no way to add color. It would wash off. You could try etching colored glass. Hope that helps! J&K

Your glasses are very pretty. I watched a few other people and they leave their cream for about 10 to 15 minutes, i did some for 15 and i think the y look smeary..do you think it is because of how long the cream was on?
@TheONeilSisters

We recommend following the directions on the package. If you leave it on longer than necessary it could have time to seep under the stickers and blur your edges and look smeary. Hope that helps! J&K

@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle, The etch cream is just for glass and doesn't work on Pyrex or plastics. Are the tumblers stainless steel? We've etched copper before using PCB Etch (used to make circuit boards). Here's the project on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/organic-chemistry/ Don't know if it works on anything other than copper. J&K

@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! Once you peel the stickers off, rinse off the etch cream, and wash the area with soap and water, it is safe. The chemical process ends once the glasses are completely washed. No etch cream will be left on the glass and the birds will be fine! J&K

Can you use etching cream over top of a crackle finish? Or any other type of finish? Or will it not show?
@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 6 жыл бұрын
Great question! Etching cream is a chemical etching process where the cream eats through the top layer of glass. It isn't like spraying a frosty finish, it is like sand blasting the glass but using chemicals instead of sand. If there is already a finish on the surface of the glass, the etch cream will eat through that too. If the glass itself is crackled inside, it may work. We've never tried it. Let us know if you do. We'd love to hear your results! J&K

Julie, We found this on the Armour Etch site: Q: Will Armour Etch or Etch Bath affect my septic system? A: Accumulate the waste water in a plastic pail or tub. Baking soda can be added to your waste water to neutralize the water. ph strips you can purchase at a pool supply or drugstore. The ph strip will indicate when the water is neutralized. Once neutralized, the water can be flushed down the toilet and not affect your septic system.

Can you mix any die or paint into the etching paste to give the etching area some color?
@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 7 жыл бұрын
We get this question a lot! The etch cream chemically alters the glass so it has an etched texture. Then you wash the etch cream off. There is nothing left on the glass to add color. You can however start with colored glass and etch it, although we haven't tried that yet. Good luck!

The O'Neil Sisters Thank you very much. I thinking if you wanted to start with a colored glass but have a completely different color etch.
@simplysaida

I used to do this as a glass blower but it required making the vessel yourself with one color inside and another color outside. Then once it was properly cooled you had to use a sand blaster to get through the thickness of the first layer of glass. I've never seen a commercial product made that way. But a shop with a lot of glass vases and things might have what you're looking for. I have seen methods of coloring plates with sharpies and then baking them. If you found glass that could resist the heat of recommended baking time for sharpies, then you could color the glass, bake it, put the stickers on, THEN etch it. I haven't tested this but the etch cream SHOULD eat through the sharpie that isn't protected by stickers and leave the glass under the stickers colored. Only thing that might go wrong is if somehow baking the sharpie creates some kind of resist against the etch cream.

@TheONeilSisters

Hi Pam, The etch cream we are using chemically etches the glass. It's like a chemical version of sand blasting. It takes off the outside layer of glass making the surface less shiny. It ends up frosted. You wash the etch cream off. So there's no way to add color. It would wash off. You could try etching colored glass. Hope that helps! J&K

Hi Lanika, Do you mean you want to mask the pattern with stickers like we did, but then use spray paint that looks like frosted glass? Yes that should work. The glasses won't be etched but will look etched. Follow the directions on the spray paint for washing and care instructions. J&K

After you are done, and take the stickers off, and wash it wish soap and water, are the chemicals still harmful? Drinking out of the wine glass wouldn’t be a problem correct? (Once the chemical process is done and it’s washed off, it’s no longer reacting?)

Great question, Jessica! Once you peel the stickers off, rinse off the etch cream, and wash the glasses with soap and water, the glasses are safe to drink out of. The chemical process ends once the glasses are completely washed. Hope yours turn out great!

If you decide to use a colored glass, make sure it is real glass and not just colored on the surface. If it is only colored on the surface, Etch Cream will not work. Use Sand Etch for topically colored glass.” Hope that helps! Jennifer & Kitty
