When we write an apology or explain a mistake in writing, we have 3 goals:
1. Find a solution and move forward
2. Protect the relationship between ourselves and the person our mistake affected
3. Protect ourselves by not over-apologizing
To apologize for or explain a mistake in writing, we want to use 4 steps:
1. Main Point: Say the apology itself.
2. Honesty: Explain what happened.
3. Empathy: Show you understand how the mistake may have impacted the reader.
4. Solutions: Provide solutions for a way forward.
