What James is talking about, in a nutshell, is critical analysis/critical thinking. It's where you deconstruct a statement or point of view and look at the issues, conclusions, reasons, ambiguities, sources used; the messenger etc. and layer by layer, and at the end; present a position to those you're in discussion with the pros and cons of what they're saying. A superb way to learn is by reading "Asking the right questions: A guide to critical thinking"

jesus jones 😡 Apparently you are no ‘intellectual’ according to your own definition! Therefore, how can you criticise that which you despise when you do not possess the mental capability to do so? The fatuous example you quote is just that and irrelevant to the application of critical thinking. Try including ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions to develop your understanding of the application of critical thinking.

I could listen to James speak all day. His journey from a gossip column journalist to one of the UK's most prominent broadcast presenters has been astounding. You can tell he absolutely loves what he does for a living and is desperate to understand the injustices of today's world. I really cannot understand any of the criticisms thrown at James, particularly on Twitter and (Surprise, surprise) youtube comments. If you have listened to his show or have read his book/articles, you'll know that he isn't afraid to debate views and opinions that differ from his own. In fact, he let's people air their position but expects them to be able to back up their arguments with facts. I feel that his haters get angry because they know that James has the ability to destroy their world view using facts and reason. He champions fairness and justice for all, which can only ever be a good thing, right? So you'd think, but then you read the vile comments written about him... I'd love for James to get more airtime on broadcast channels other than LBC. He should have his own podcast or KZfaq channel to do what he does without constraints. His series on KZfaq for JOE was great and gave him space to explore interesting topics with fascinating guests. Finally, I'd highly recommend buying his book. I got it on audiobook and it was a brilliant listen.

@@danielr82 He actually gives people a chance to justify their stance with reason and facts. He has never identified as having any particular party-political alliance, and regularly admits to having views that don't neatly fall into "Left" or "Right" categories. He actively wants people to help change his own views and is open to being convinced that his stance isn't necessarily correct (some examples of this can be seen in his shifting views on transgender issues, obesity, technological dependence, class discrimination, animal rights, religious doctrines, toxic masculinity...) He "hurls abuse" only when public figures are demonstrably guilty of lying, acting out of self-interest and cannot justify their behaviour. His sympathies are often with people who have been fed a pack of distorted "facts" and who have never had their views challenged. If you listen to just one of his shows, you'll hear multiple examples of him really trying to understand opposing views with an open-mind. He's also good at calling-out bullshit when he hears it, but does it by presenting provable facts and a well-reasoned argument. Compare that to the complete contempt that Nick Ferrari and Nigel Farrage display when someone calls their show with an opposing point of view. They don't invest any time engaging with the caller and instead, choose to reassert their own world-view without any attempt to debate the issue in a constructive way. I think that most of Jame's critics have never actually taken time to listen to his show and instead, rely on clips and vids that are taken out of context. I'd urge you to read his book, as it totally highlights his plight for nuanced debate that is thought-based and not steeped in ignorance or lazy hyperbole.
@RaxLakhani

@@danielr82 it's interesting that that's how you view him. I'm fascinated in these days of divided Britain to see how something that is so obviously benign to me is viewed completely differently by soneone else. And vice-versa. For me, it's plain to see that James is sincere in his quest to unlock issues through intellectual debate and when I hear him speak, I admire his sense of justice and reason. However, that's not to say I'm right. Maybe he is how you view him. What's interesting to me is the way in which the same situation or personality is interpreted in two totally different ways. You seem like an intelligent guy, so I'm not going to dispute your ability to listen, make sound judgement and understand the nuance of O'brien's shtick. I too, think that I'm fairly open, rational and can smell bullshit a mile off yet I'm defending James like he's a Saint. Maybe your partly right, and maybe I am too. I'm just fed up of polarisation of everything into "good" and "bad", "right" and "wrong", "team Tory" or "team Corbyn", "left" and "right". Even though I mentioned Farrage earlier, I was a bit unfair. I force myself to tune into his show now and again as I don't like to view people as characatures. I don't like Farrage's politics and I certainly don't like many of the decisions he's made or things he's said. But occasionally he says something that reminds me that he's just a bloke who feels passionate about his view of the world. In his eyes, he's a good guy with right on his side. And occasionally he says something that isn't disagreeable. My point is, I wish debate in this country wasn't polarised into "he's a dickhead" vs "he's a god". The binary Brexit vote has already divided the nation in two and ever since, I've felt quite pessimistic about our society and its ability to empathise, seek out different opinions and challenge them in a non combative way. That doesn't mean caving in and finding middle ground... It just means hearing the other person's view and giving them a decent chance to make their case. If they can't, that's fine. If they can, I'll be better for it.

Because the publicly-funded health service has to pick up the pieces in the event of an accident. Because people will not take basic precautionary measures to look after themselves. Because the road is a shared place where people have to abide by a mutually-agreed set of regulations. Because people - on average - are very poor at assessing risk/benefit ratios, and the data shows that they are generally overestimating their own abilities and safety.

The irony is astounding that James talks about knowing what terms mean and why people believe in them and then introduces terms, having stripped them of all nuance and complexity for his own purposes, only to reveal he doesn't fully understand what these terms mean. This allows him in a snide and childish way to say "Who is against health?", "Who is against safety?", "Classical Liberal means you are selfish and don't want nurses and police.", with the slight pause and smirk that presupposes "Only an idiot thinks that way." This is the argument process of a teenager and yet he stands there arrogantly on stage as if he was the new Socrates. I cannot believe he is really that unaware, which actually makes it far, far worse.
@MrStefanoRinaldi
@MrStefanoRinaldi 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, though he doesn't claim to know what terms mean. He is saying that the people citing them don't know what they mean. He isn't correcting people when they say "health and safety" as a defense to an argument. He is asking them what they mean by saying "health and safety", and more often than not, the response to the question "what do you mean by health and safety" or say "political correctness" is: "well, ya know, well, erm, I don't really know, but...". He isn't claiming clairvoyance or absolute knowledge on every subject ever. He is saying that people say things often without understanding their viewpoints. And when they are questioned directly about it, they resort to confusion, or aggression. Hence the popularity of his radio clips.

@@MrStefanoRinaldi Yes, I see your point, and that is what James 'says' he is doing, and if he were doing that I would applaud him. This is exactly what Socrates did and through it helped both sides to better our low resolution ideas on things to bring clarity. My issue is that he pretends that only one side sees these issues in low resolution and are therefore stupid or wrong. When he does meet someone who has a clearer and reasoned view to explore, he twists and contorts logic to make it seem that they don't really understand what they are talking about. Here is a perfect example where James ends up suggesting that the concept of sovereignty is that every individual gets exactly what they want and any concession is a giving up of sovereignty. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7yejMirl9a7k58.html He is an educated man and knows this is nonsense, but uses this argument to make the caller seem uninformed. He is arguing in bad faith and not doing what you describe, he has no interest in finding 'truth' as Socrates did.

The man is an idiot of the very first order. I can’t listen to him for more than two minutes. And as usual I stopped watching this quite soon when he went on about taxes. Clearly he has no clue. The nation’s prosperity depends on comparatively few people. That is the truth. Also those people definitely do not include him. In order to inspire those few people able and willing to create the wealth the rest of us will enjoy, they need incentive. They need incentive, not least because being the creator of wealth usually requires risk taking and extreme hard work. If that idiot, whose name I can’t bear to mention, thinks people will risk everything, work all hours and either lose everything if their ideas don’t work or if successful pay most of the rewards in taxes, he is insane, in the literal sense of insane. And it’s been proved time after time that lowering taxes usually INCREASES revenues. That seems counter-intuitive to dumb bells like him but it’s not surprising. Suddenly low taxes makes it’s worth working hard, creating wealth etc. Something else the idiot won’t understand. It doesn’t really matter that much if someone is hugely rich. That person can still only eat three meals a day etc etc but the money he/she spends on luxuries provides employment for many. His/her money is (sort of) shared by us all. Obviously there are limits but in Britain we are nowhere near any limits in that regard. He thinks he’s clever, but all he ever does is spout politically correct (in other words lies) and sanctimonious claptrap.
