How to Extend HDMI Cable Length with HDMI Extender

The best way to know if a cheap HDMI Repeater works is to buy it and test it.
I bought 4 of them because I needed HDMI joiners, and these are so cheap.
As a general rule of thumb, regular HDMI cables work up to 15m to 20m.
With the HDMI Repeater, the HDMI signal is regenerated to extend longer cable runs.
It claims to extend HDMI transmission to 40m using high-quality HDMI cables.
In this test, I use low-speed HDMI cables to keep the costs down.

Tip from Robert Harker:
Cable length is also affected by the wire gauge size of the individual conductors. Typically this is only 28 AWG (American Wire Gauge). Two larger AWG conductor sizes are 24 AWG and 22 AWG. I found that 22 AWG could go to 100ft (30m). The drawback is that the cables themselves are much thicker.
FYI, 28 AWG = 64ohms/1000ft,
24 AWG = 25ohms/1000ft,
22 AWG = 16ohms/1000ft.

Great test. I was told today by a high-end AV retailer that HDMI cables should be no longer than 5 meters, and you must use a balun to extend over CAT 6 cable. He was going to charge over $400 for this. You've just saved me a lot of money with this video. Thank you.

i cant thank you enough for your video. i have spent a lot of $$$ on cables and joiners and endless headache as i always thought that my receiver is the culprit and bad cables. i just couldnt accept that my flagship receiver kept dropping the signal over 30+ metres cables... i even got a replacement hdmi board for the receiver and it was still the same... until i came across your video and realised that ces spec cable length is only about 5m...

This helped me a lot for my recreation purposes. I have my PS4 which I play GTA V Online in my studio and sometimes I want to play in my bed in my room which is in my house. So I measured I needed 20-22 meters of cable to make that work and a solid splitter. Thank you, sir.

You seem to have missed the point of a buffer (repeater), which always goes BEFORE any long cable run. It's not about restoring a degraded signal; it is about boosting the signal to maintain a useable signal through a longer cable. Start with your shortest patch from the camera into the first repeater, then the 20m cable; then if you want to go further add another repeater before each subsequent cable length. The next problem is the 5V required to power the device... HDMI spec includes a 5V rail, however this voltage will drop over the length of the cable(s)

Not true...the repeater chips are about error correction so need to be placed where the errors are greatest, ie at the end of the longest lead. @@AdrianLeeYC

If you need to run long HDMI cable runs consider HDMI over fiber optic cable. HDMI do not carry analog signals so there are no AtoD/DtoA converters. Just simple digital circuits to regenerate the digital signal. Length does not typically affect fiber optics until you get in to many miles or kilometers. I have been using the 100ft AmazonBasics 4K HDMI Fiber Optic Cable for $60 with no problems on my 1080p rig without problems. They also have 150ft, 200ft and 300ft lengths. You probably want to use some sort of cable reel for these longer lenghts. Like the Bayco Kw-110 Storage Reel.

Hi Adrian, I have had a similar issue using 10M HDMI cables (3 x) to cover around 7.5M for an AV setup. I had no signal or rather an intermittent signal. My cables had been coiled up like yours in your video. You should uncoil them and try again. I uncoiled mine and it now works fine with no booster. I think coiled cables may affect the signal drastically due to interference etc.

guys 4k hdr cable which is hdmi v2 works 18gbps till 7.5 meters. then you need fiber cable or extender module.

I have a 4k 120hz OLED 77" tv. And I don't want to move the PC. It seems passing HDMI signal is not possible through extenders. The 48gbps is a little bit too much unless you go for industrial solutions.

HDMI max range is only 50ft /15.3 meters so basically from the splitter to the end of the first 20m cable there is no more signal for the repeater to amplify. Thats why it did not work in between the 20 meter cables. The proper test is maybe to use a single 40meter hdmi if there is one available. and put the hdmi repeater after a shorter hdmi cable from the camera. I also noticed at 4:35 that the input light was out. Maybe the reason why there is nothing on the monitor.

I saw in another video to best use a powered (active) repeater. However they warned that a repeater shpuld always be attached at a distance before the HDMI signal weakens, which on average is at 15 feet. From Source to 15 feet to repeater to another 15 feet to receiver such as a monitor or projector.

I don't recomend those cables since i bought 2 of them both of 10 meters and yesterday i conected my splitter to my capture card and it goes black and signal returned like 1 second black and 1 second signal

The splitter will definitely work because it is powered and needs to be plugged to the AC. I am testing this HDMI repeater for places where I have no access to power.

From what I understand, the transmission distance is limited by the type of HDMI cable used.

You never tried 40m the way the device intended (cable to device, device over a 40m cable to the display), you tried to have the first device provide enough power to the 2nd device to get it to work... Yeah, good luck drawing THAT much power through the HDMI, I expect that the devices can't actually power another one down from it..) From you config, you should be able to do a 10m cable > device > 40m cable (No, not 2 20m cables with another device in the middle, that won't work), I would use a single 40m cable if you wanted to get a proper test. Also, keep in mind that your camera is providing all the power for the device (it has to come from somewhere!), so if it is running on batteries it will drain them faster..

HDMI signal is ment to work up to 10m max, rarely can a device (laptop camera etc) push the signal beyond 10m by itself (12m if you are lucky), use a repeter or extender for more, and don't buy hdmi cables longer than 20m I'm surprised that even those work.

Unfortunately you didn't explain ANY of the resolution and refresh information. Who cares if a 1080p signal can be sent 500 feet...no one uses 1080p anymore. So did any of this run 4k@60fps? We'll never know :D

@@AdrianLeeYC Hey Adrian, sorry if I sound upset, it's just with fiber optic HDMI cables, you can get 100s of feet of throughput based on the signal. You can send up to 4k@30hz over 50 feet no problem, with cables made up to 300 feet. But at what cost of signal loss is the major important question, since after you spend all of this money on hardware, you find out the details just aren't there. So after dropping 200 bucks so far, I am trying to solve issues that apparently no one else seems to have found, or at least made a video to show solutions to.

Anepch I use a 300ft fiber optic hdmi cable and works flawlessly. It’s pricey but worth it. Sewell direct has a few different lengths. Or you can go a cheaper route and do Ethernet to hdmi with really long runs.

Hello, I got one hdmi cable 15 meters and other is 5 meters. I try connect them using Unitex extender I got weird issues when I try open google website siganl starts disconnecting. When i open youtube or other website I even tried play video everything works fine. Same issues with other computer and with other cable.
