The question of how to fast generates quite a bit of discussion and confusion, especially since there are so many different opinions from different priests on the rules of fasting. Life in today’s world can make keeping the fast difficult for many of us. To help clarify this, we offer 3 levels of fasting that hopefully will provide each of us with a way to use the Lenten period to prepare for the joyous Resurrection of our Lord and Savior.
Hosted by Father Angelo Maggos of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Rochester, NY.

Our Ethiopian Orthodox tradition is what you called level 1. No meet or dairy products allowed, not for 40, but for 55 days straight. The monastic tradition is even stricter. Many people start fasting at midnight and fast till 3pm the nextday. As you rightly said it is a matter of practice. Children are encouraged to fast from the age of seven onwards. May God bless the Christian nations all over the world and give us peace during this lent season

It's 55 days with no meat and 48 days of fasting for the Eastern Orthodox. 7 days of no meat for Cheesefare, 40 days of fasting for lent, Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday, and 6 days of fasting Holy Week. Though, technically, weekends plus the feast of the Annunciation aren't fast days, but still no meat or dairy (or fish except for annunciation and Palm Sunday).

In our Middle eastern Greek Orthodox/Catholic Maronite tradition, we only focus on not eating anything other than vegetables (so olive oil is allowed), fruits and bread as long as it doesn’t contain milk. No meat, no dairy products, no sugar as well. Usually, before starting fast, we decide why are we fasting and how will we be fasting (Fasting only for what we think we cannot live with (for the only thing that we can’t live with is God) or fasting only for an amount of time a day (just like Christ did for 40 days)). Most of us would usually not eat or drink anything from evening to afternoon. But sadly, today people don’t care about God anymore, they forgot who God is. Agnosticism is growing in the middle. 😔

You must not listen to what this priest just promoted! Absolutely no food from animal! Start juicing! Juice to get your vitamins and to heal your poluted body from all of satans food! The food is poison for our bodies! Pray and repent! Receive holy communion as your reward! Once you eat meat you will feel like a failure and will continue to eat meat. But its only a little bit of meat. Lol 🤦‍♂️ congrats to the priest ! Must be a freemason church! Promoting the 🌈 now to ! Antichrists are every where! The devil wants you to fail! I'm not Greek nor am I in any orthodox church or even the Catholic Church. However I did recently find Christ and was confused about fasting. I'm a diabetic so I can't just go all in and not eat for 40 days but I really want to honor Christ and show obedience and connect with him deeper. This video was very informative. Thank you.

Well you don't need to not eat for 40 days it's fasting not copy what Jesus did in a desert. Fasting is easiest done year round first off. I don't eat from sun up to sun down 24/7 in normal times. Friday would be fish only but also have someone who knows you more than anyone else choose something else for you to give up other than meat. Meat is inherently going to be abstained from anyway. More than anything Lent is a formula for making a great change in your life and to reflect on your values and those around you and adjust your situation accordingly.

Father, Bless you. I had to give up my son to Jesus Christ on November 29, 2021, at the age of 57, just four days after his birthday and one day before his son's 22nd birthday. He died on the first Sunday of Advent. I have had many painful experiences in my life and no one was ever there for me. I choose Level 3 which I have already been doing. Jesus sent your words to me today. It's like a miracle. Bless you.

I hope that you will also find someone close that will be there for you. If not someone you know and trust then professional help. Being vulnerable to someone you can trust is scary, but it is also a first step to lightening your heart. I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of your son. He will also be there for you now, as you will need to be a support for your grandson - and he for you. I wish you love and light.

Isaiah 58 [5] Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD? [6] Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? [7] Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? [8] Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. [9] Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; [10] And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: [11] And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

This content is not protestant, l wouldn't be here if it was. There is no fasting season in protestantism. I'm here seeking advice because l come from a protestant background and this is super helpful to me. I understand your problem with it but beginners can't go from 100 to 0. Churchfathers do discuss how you shouldn't become proud of your fasting, how it's useless without prayer, to keep your eyes on your own plate etc. There are so many more difficulties in it than just not eating certain foods. I'm a new one, my body didn't adapt yet, lots of headaches, my family doesn't want to fast. Doesn't mean l don't try but l can't do it perfectly and being made feel guilty for that doesn't make people in general do better, it's discouraging and you feel so embarrassed in front of other orthodox people you'd rather quit and stop trying. Humility and trials are good but most people need understanding guides to adapt instead of quitting and do it for God, not out of peer pressure. There are many new converts lately and you have to make things simpler to them at first so every year they can do it better, l really don't think it's making our own rules because it's clear what those are supposed to be but struggling with them for one reason or another shouldn't be a taboo, the goal is to help us get there.

I'm a Taoist but somewhat of an agnostic. Not one that denies God just experiences it differently. I will be taking part in fasting and will be essentially on a vegan diet as a result. With the exception of a few things in my kitchen that I do not want to waste such as the few eggs I have left. It's easier for me because I am almost on a vegetarian anyways except for rare occasional consumption of meat which generally happened once a year. Recently I tried eating a few meats thats I had come to somewhat miss over the years since I cut it almost entirely from my diet for my beliefs. With this fast I hope to cleanse myself and bring back balance in my own way. I admit I do not do it for the same reasons you do it. Many people also do not fast in the U.K, not anyone that I personally know. Though I'm happy to take this journey with you, as Jesus was truly remarkable and we can all learn from him. May God bless you all! May you stay true to your fast this lent!

I would interpret the "3 levels of fasting" as the Economy that the Church does to each one of us based on our situation. One size doesn't fit them all. However, what the father calls a "monastic fasting", is wrong. The rules and the canons of the Church on Fasting are very clear on what we should eat and what we should not eat each day. And those rules apply to ALL OF US (monastics, priests and lay people). Now, if someone goes through a struggle, then this needs to be discussed with a Priest and the Priest is going to decide what's appropriate and what's not appropriate for that person to eat.

Thank you for this video! I am just starting to explore orthodoxy, and the only thing I read about fasting was what you described as "level 1," and wherever I read about it gave the impression that this level of fasting is a requirement for ALL orthodox. It seemed so overwhelming and black and white, that I stopped pursing more knowledge about orthodoxy. Your video gives my the encouragement I need now!

I am also under the exploratory process and in the beginning I found complicated as well. Having a conversation with a priest he told me that fasting is not only about food. However, is to resist against desires, temptation, pride. In the Desert Fathers book, it is also mention that. 'If you fast regularly, do not be inflated with pride, but if you think highly of yourself because of it, then you had better eat meat. It is better for a man to eat meat than to be inflated with pride and to glorify himself.'

As an Catholic I always thought the Orthodox brothers and sisters always went vegan durng Lent? The Ethiopian Christians I knew always gave up all animal products. I know thy are not in communion with all the "Orthodox" family but I thought the rules on fasting were the same. The Greeks seem to fast like the Catholics-a weaker fast in my opinion than our holy tradition called for. I encourage Christians to fast from all animal products as a spiritual offering and as a way to be in solidarity with the earth and her creatures by having a lesss violent lifestyle in our diet during our prayer time. Peace of Christ to my Eastern family from a Western relative!

The level 1 fast as you describe is essentially a vegan lifestyle- no animal products. So we eat fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts, legumes. A Whole Foods plant based diet is extremely healthy (example: prophet Daniel). In addition to prayer and service, many people like myself follow this lifestyle all the time. It is not nutritionally deficient- there is a reason why people cut out animal products during fasting- when we know the reason, it all makes sense.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.27No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Thanks father! I would like to point out, however, you can very easily live off of a completely plant based diet and get all the nutrition you need. I think the hardest part about the level one fast is everything else that goes along with it.
