Ferry gliding is the art of using the flow of water or wind past your boat to move it sideways across that flow. Traditionally used by ferries to cross fast-flowing rivers, it’s also extremely useful for leisure craft when arriving at or leaving a tide or wind-affected berth. Our resident boating instructor Jon Mendez explains how it's done...

lol you made it look far too easy John. Next time, make a mess of it (like we all do) and show how you'd recover! I love these videos, they're always so interesting.

No doubt an experienced skipper demonstrating this skill on a perfect day. Unfortunately many novice viewers will be caught out on busy crowded jetty ramps with 10-15knt gusts. A few words to the inexperienced, practice somewhere quiet and continue to practice until you are confident to tackle a more hectic situation. Please remember etiquette above all. Good luck.

I saw the title and instantly thought back to my whitewater kayaking days. We would ferry glide as a means of getting from one side of the river to the other without moving downstream, though it looks much easier in a powered vessel and slow moving water 😁

Wish I was on the Dart now, it looks great ! I love ferry gliding, the best way to cross a river whether in a motor boat, dinghy, canoe or sailing boat.

This should be so obvious - yet I've never done it in 10 years of coming in to a dock at our picnic spot along a river. Thanks for the tip! I can't wait for summer to try it out. (Our water here in Wisconsin is a little too "stiff" for boats right now.)

@@MotorBoatYachting I subscribed a while ago :) The “How To” video’s really are useful, I am lucky enough to have just taken delivery of a Princess V40 (lifetime ambition!) after having a RIB for 10 years so need all the help I can get! She’s on the of G pontoon at Swanwick so I’ll be looking out for the team!! :) M

Our sister magazine Yachting Monthly did a great series on this a few years ago called Crash Test Boat: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eraSaKSHnKjFdGg.html They used a sailboat but most of the same principles apply to motorboats

Interesting. I always though ferry gliding was reserved for boats with rudders. Great to see it done with outdrives.

Hi Jon. I remember doing this manoeuvre as part of the PB Level 2. It works, using tide to berth in a controlled manner. Great video thanks 😊

Awesome, can't wait to get on the water to try this! I'm familiar with ferrying sideways across a river in a kayak, hadn't thought about it with a power boat. I'm also interesting in trying this in our jet boat, which has very poor low-speed maneuverability. Just keeping flow amidships, use the rudder effect of the whole boat.

It's amazing that someone can be so good at this as a practical matter, and yet have an entirely wrong theory on how it works. There is no water pushing the boat into or away from the dock.
