How to fight in full 14th centruy harness

This video is made as an attempt to answer some of the many questions about the use of harness (armour) received after the publication of our video "dressing in 14th century armor". This is therefore not a video showing harnischfechten techniques, but a video showing the weakness of a 14th century harness.
To make comments, the visor of my helmet is open through most of the video. This will of course make my face an interesting target for my adversary. With my visor open, Pål will obviously try to stab me in my face!

@@dawson3776 you r right but once you have a castle or a city or i dunno fiefs in towns that make money you really dont need that ransom money. You struggle to convince lords or have good relationships. Thats why you need honour late game. but if you have financial problems there are many solutions to that and ransoming is yep one of them

The interesting point here is that ransoming was actually pretty common since soldiers wearing large amounts of armor tend to be nobles and rich folk since armor had to be provided by the user. The guy wearing good armor is a pretty good way to make money if you can take them down and the family pays the ransom-if you survive considering the fact that it was ironically the nobles who were trained the most in combat and were often times squired by knights-contrary to anime making them seem pretty dumb with their guards despite being common folk who couldn't afford training.

@The Great Memery warhorses in the 14th century were around 550 to 650 kilograms, not a ton lol. They didn't use horses like the shire horse for war. Shire horses and other work horses are too big. The actual muscle power and speed isn't proportional to the body dimensions. A shire horse in full barding with a fully armored knight on top would not even last half as long as actual war horses. the bigger the horse the more armor weight you have for same protection. draft horses are also too tall, since you still need to reach your enemy with your weapon. the larger the horse the sooner footmen can attack it and the later you can reach said footmen. it all needs a specific balance of good height advantage and impact force (weight) while still staying fast and enduring enough. around 600kg was the ideal mark of power, speed, weight (impact) and height.

Swords are meant for cutting flesh & bone as well as softer armor such as cloth & leather, but heavy armor is quite resistant. Useful stuff for any D&D DM who wants realism in their fantasy.

Even Gambesons are very resistant to even sharp swords. You need a very sharp sword to cut through a gambeson, and if they have mail or plate on them, cutting is useless.

Actually, I think 1,5-2 mm steel and 5-6 mm wax hardened quality leather have more or less comparable characteristics, both in weight and protection. Especially with scale armor

Incorrect. The visor would commonly be down when on horse, either jousting, or when taking arrow fire. However, the visor impedes vision and breathing. Fighting in armor is a highly strenuous activity that puts a lot of strain on the cardio-vascular system. Knights would commonly raise their visor, in dismounted melee combat. As the knight with visor down will quickly become disoriented and have massive blind spots - enabling their opponent to target the weak points outlined in this video. A notable weak point (not covered here) is the slits in the visor, which merely require an opponent to align their blade to pass - or stab with a "Stiletto". The ability to see what your opponent is doing, and having the calisthenic endurance to continue fighting are commonly more important than what face protection the visor offers.

I understand video games not having complex enough controls to replicate anti armor techniques. You _are_ just using a controller/mouse and keyboard and not your whole body (and you want to be able to dress your character in badass full plate). But they could at least have blunt weapons do more damage against plate and mail armor, and blade weapons do more damage against cloth armor. Movies on the other hand is a different story

@@viktorthevictor6240 there’s a couple games that have done blunt weapons ignoring plate armor and swords and bladed weapons being effective against light armor. chivalry 2 does the former and kingdom come deliverance and mount and blade warband does both.

I love the armor, it looks great, better than what I see in a lot of movies. It's good that you addressed the different methods/weapons of attack while not getting too technical about it, you got straight to the point (pun inteneded). I can imagine a 14th centruy master-at-arms teaching beginners in a similar manner to what you guys were doing. Putting your bodyweight behind the thrust of you sword was educational for me, I've never heard that mentioned before.

Basically using the sword like a spear. Usually swords werent your first choice when fighting opponents in full plate, as the clip showed. Hammers, maces, axes (the backside with the spike, not the blade itself) and especially weapons like halberds are better choices. Swords were usually used more as sidearms or duelling weapons.

@@KeyOneGodSun Utilizing HEMA would be so cool for a movie, but they probably don't want to invest excess money into it, since it isn't necessary for selling the product. Hopefully we get a director with a good budget who's passionate about this in particular Oh, and I've heard that stabs and thrusts are way more difficult to choreograph in a safe way than slicing is. It would be putting the stuntmen in more danger, one thing that has to be considered. My solution is to just use more blunt weapons instead of swords, or less armor.

I love this video. It's very informative. Many media depictions of armor are quite inaccurate, and thus leave many viewers illusioned with how armor works, and how it is bypassed. I love that you mentioned not just how effective polearms are, but went in-depth on half-swording - a few of those weak points never occured to me. Stabbing for the joints and neck is fairly intuitive, but it just never occured to go for the groin - considering that many knights ride calvary, I never made the connection that their groins would sorta have to be less armored, excluding the one who stay on foot. It'd be awesome to see a movie or show deminstrate half-swording like this in fight scenes and whatnot. To point out how swords are largely useless against heavy armored opponents unless one employs the use of murderstrokes (holding the sword by the blade and using the crossguard as a hammer) or halfswording.

This is why i digged the full plate combat scenes in excalibur they actually emphasize lack of mobility in the scens and far more blunt damage with sword hilts maces etc i mean minus the actual excalibur fantasy cheese 😅

All these killing techniques should've been portrayed in medieval movies and it would have been much more accurate overall. All we have seen so far is that they can slice right through metal armor, even plates and pierce directly through breast plates with swords and spears which is just not likely ever gonna happen as a good quality breast plate have been shown to deflect even crossbow bolts. Even a hard leather armor or a regular gambeson is good enough to protect a person from sword slices in real life, let alone metal armor. It would have been much more entertaining and interesting to see how these killing methods would work against a fully armored knight.

I have a feeling that kind of choreography is more expensive than the usual hack and slash, and it might be more dangerous too (striking and slicing is a lot easier to fake and block safely than thrusts and stabs)

Heres my question. How where the armors maintained. I would imagine a few weeks in the field you were a walking pile of rust. Were they coated with lard or just polished on a regular basis?

Well, I have heard coating plate with wax was how you could do it. Oil however was available at the time, so you could have your squire oil/wax it for you.
